View Full Version : Crack in the rudder

My dad and I are working on the boat to get ready to Memorial Day and as we are working on installing the FAE, I notice a nice crack down one side of the rudder. Hopefully the picture comes through on tapatalk but I wanted to see what you guys thought. I couldn't tell you when it happened. We applied some stress and it doesn't seem to be spreading or moving. Mine looks like that too. Maybe not quite that wide, but a little longer. My guess is, it's from putting a ton of water in bags in the boat and surfing behind it lol. I'm sure it generates a ton of forces and stress on the rudder and other components in the boat.

I would take it out and have it brazed by a competent welder before it gets longer.

Just swap it with an oversized rudder from an SA

Hmmm. I wonder if JB Weld works on brass. Can't hurt to try.

Jb weld will do nothing to keep it from cracking.

No power turns, we drive the boat very easy, and very little surfing - more wake boarders in this group. We do load it fairly heavy for boarding - anywhere from 2300-3000 lbs. I assume that certainly causes some stress. My main question is if you guys feel it's a major concern to where I can't/shouldn't take the boat out this weekend or is this something I should just keep an eye on?

I would drill the end of the crack to in a attempt to keep it from getting longer then get it fixed. It cracking up into the end that passes through the boat would be my worry. If it breaks off (unlikely) then you willhave a hole in the bottom of your boat that you won't be able to plug and you won't be able to steer.
