View Full Version : Best Tie Down Method for Bow to Trailer

What does everyone do for a tie down going from their bow eye to the loop on the trailer? I can't find a turnbuckle that is short enough but still has enough strength. There is only about 8 inches to work with there. I would like something that puts some tension on there, but realizing that may not be possible. Do I need to just get a short section of chain and put it on there for safety's sake?

I'd say get a length of chain cut with some C-Link connectors on both ends.. I dont think it needs to necessarily be snug, just a secondary safety to the strap.
sorry to say i dont use one..
i dont tow very far... but .. probably should..

the trailer for my Stingray had a chain, maybe 12-18 inches long, was not snug, but just a safety strap just in case. The LSV is a lot heavier though, so with the straps on the stern and the winch strap is it really going to go anywhere? Chain might be a good idea as a backup though.

Here is my setup. Winch strap, bow hold down strap, and safety chain.

Where did you find that short of a strap? That would be great.

I used a safety chain and the above chainlink. I put the shrink wrap around the chain and split wire loom around the link at the trailer... I hate rub spots on the trailer..

I use a chain as pictured above. No extra strap tho.

Geez Russ, you think that will hold? LOL

I use a masterlock cable like this one. It's coated so it won't leave any marks. I wrap two loops between the bow eye and trailer.

Maybe just a little overkill. Winch strap to winch, short strap to stop bounce movement, and chain for the oh s$&@ situation.

Fisherman's Marine Store in Oregon.

That probably doesn't help you.

I use a couple of quickdraw climbing set like these:
http://m.rei.com/product/809735/?cm_mmc=cse_PLA-_-pla-_-product-_-8097350014&black-diamond-freewire-quickdraw-set,-polished/orange&preferredSku=8097350014&mr:trackingCode=B5D82336-9325-E011-8E88-001B21631C34&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=m&mr:adType=pla&mr:ad=44272135480&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:filter=61471568680&msid=S3GgayYU_dm%7Cpcrid%7C44272135480%7C

I use two and have the carabiner gates oriented opposite each other- just left over habits from my climbing days.

Get the retractable and mount it. Very fast and plenty strong.

Did you have to drill into your frame for the Bow BB? I was going to put mine on a couple weeks ago, then said eff it, I'll deal with it later :-)

They'll probably charge $14 for that part which is $17. Sorry had a bad experience with them today and won't ever do business with them. $21 part,$13 shipping from TN to SC. No way. David (rdlangston) suggested pacifictrailers.com and they had it $9 cheaper and $5.99 shipping. Sold.

Maybe check them for the same part.

Kane, I just bought and installed that G2 boat buckle and used it this past weekend and love it!!

I think I did have to drill a hole. So what? Got to put it right where I wanted it. I'll take a pic if anyone needs it.

Pat are these the rear mount transom straps and are they plug and play for the boat mate?

I'd like a pic if you don't mind. Curious where and how you mounted it.

I just used two quick Links and a slip hook. I do not know the exact items that I used but some like what I used are linked below. Knowing me I went a little over kill and could support the whole boat and truck weight from my setup. Setup was quick easy and done. Just attach the three pieces together and attach to trailer.

Here's a pic. Put it slightly off center so it could be thru-bolted. Works great. So easy at the ramp with this one on the front and two more at the back.

They look pretty much the same to me but the "bow" one is sold individually and the "rear" ones are sold in pairs.

kane,

with the rear mounted ones, does the strap make contact with the lower transom of the hull? I'm wondering because it looks like they sell some additional mounting brackets that help to stand off the BB. Also, would you mind sharing a pic of the rear buckle location/installation?

Thanks
Steve

I can't remember if it does or not. I saw this too late and had her socked back in the garage already. I'll check next time we pull her out-- probably Sat.

Here is a pic of the rear ones on mine. They do touch the hull, but are tight enough that they won't rub/move to cause damage.

Installed the boat buckle bow tie down last night to match the boat buckles in the rear. I really like how they work and that there is nothing to misplace.

As mentioned earlier the bow tie down has to be mounted slightly off center to allow for through bolting.

The lead wake sticker is on the step fender, no light underneath. The FAE seems to have snuck into the pic. :)

Ah sorry about that I have a white LED light there so figured trailer was the same.
