View Full Version : Ballast filling automatically

Was wondering if someone could me what would cause a Ballast to fill on its own. Was out last weekend and never touched the switches. When I went to trailer the boat I noticed it leaning pretty heavy on the right side. Opened the locker up to store some gear and saw the bag was full.
Any ideas?

It was kinda hard to empty too. It would start emptying water at a pretty good rate and then would stop like no water was getting to the pump but had more than enough pressure with the bag being full. I'd turn the switch off then back on again and it would start spitting water out again.

Not sure about the filling issue but the emptying thing most likely is your timers were at zero and they only cycle on for about one minute. Of course this is all contingent on you having timers.

What ballast setup do you have? Completely factory g3 or have you done upgrades? We need more info on what is in the system to know what the real issue is to look for.

2008 would be aerator pumps & sprinkler valves. The sprinkler valve is probably gunked up and stuck open. Take apart the valve & clean. Pretty simple, but search forum for more info, if needed.

Stock ballast. Thanks for the tip about the valve being stuck open. I'll try and find that and clean it out

If that doesn't work, do a search on the word "Irritrol" (brand name) before you buy a replacement. Lots of good discussion on better valves and systems.

Make sure the little black override lever on the valve for that sac is in the correct position.

Where is this valve? On the line going to the sac or by the pump. Thanks

Ok I checked and one of the valves was open. Went back on the water today with the valves closed and water still got into the sacs. They didn't fill up but still got about 20 gallons in them.
And to top things off it looks like the empty pump on the left side is inop. Got water in the sac with what looks like a pain to get it out.

Check for a blown fuse on the drain pump. You could try putting some weight on the sack and pushing the water past the pump or just drain it to the bilge. Are all sacks filling or just 1? You could have some trash in the valves as stated earlier. I had an Orbit that started acting up and switched to Irritrol several years ago and have not had any issues since. Ordered them through sprinklerwarehoause.com. Pretty sure it was these.

It was just I sac but now all are getting just a little bit of water in them. Could you tell me where the fuse block is for the pumps? I tried searching for the post about how to clean the valves but can up empty.

Should be a seperate relay and fuse block for ballast under the dash.
