I know we all like projects around here and this is my latest creation that I am working on. It is a 1978 Honda CB400 that I bought running with a title for $100. I had a old set of R1 forks that I fitted on the front and it is getting converted to a monoshock.
Not mine, it was not nearly this clean.

The look that I am going after.

Chopped it up and added a tank off a 70's XL500

I was able to get the subframe welded up. Nothing is mounted permanently so it isn't square yet. I need to get the chassis tacked together so that I can pull the motor.

I would kill to find a deal like this! Keep us updated. I kept a ton of spare parts from my stunt bikes for years hoping for a project like this and never started anything.

That is exactly why I am doing it, too many parts left over from track days. Speaking of that do have any old rearset around?

Very unlikely but I will look.

I have over the past years thought about doing this to a bike, but without welding and bike knowledge I have not. On a scale of 1 to 10 is this a project for a me? I can change the oil in the boat and done minor car repair, Water pump, brakes, etc

Oh boy that is a tough question to ask, there are guys that are building bikes like this without a lot of knowledge but most work with fab shops to get the framework done. I have been building things since I was a little kid and I have always had a good mechanical knowledge. On a scale of 1-10 my build is going to be in the 8's. I could not imagine building one without a shop, welder, electrical knowledge and a sense of bodywork it would get way out of budget. Your best bet would be to buy a running bike and tweak on it until you understand it inside out.

I need to start a project like this. The look you're going after is awesome! I might have a spare set of '06 R1 rear sets. I will check when I get home. Keep us updated with pictures and info.

Irish that would be great! I am really only looking for the controls, and pegs. I am going to build the bracket itself.

Moto That is the new snap-on fork slider.

A shot from my days at Blackhawk man do I miss my R6 but not the trouble and $$ that went into it.

Lookin good. I know trackdays are super freakin $$$$$$$$ but I couldn't imagine not doing them. I love it. Such a great time. I forgot to look last night so I will when I get to the house tonight but I am 99% sure I have them.

If you ever want to get back into trackdays and want to do a little bit of driving we do a lot of trackdays along the east coast and south. But being up in WI it would be a haul for you. Hell I usually drive 10-14 hours for a track weekend

Haha no problem. Yeah it was either trackdays or a boat I think I made the right decision. Not to mention I highsided in coming out of the bus stop at BHF that pretty much put an end to my fun lol. Let me know what you want for the rearsets if you have them.

Yeah that looks horrible. But an AWESOME picture. None of my wrecks have been caught on camera. Mark I do have those rearsets. I have stock '06 R1 rearsets and possibly woodcraft rearsets off an '06 R6

i believe on this bike the off/on/off switch only connects wires in the off position. all it does is closes a ground loop for the cdi the kill the ignition. i am pretty sure in the on stage though there is no connection of any wires. these old honda 400 twins don't require a battery to run as well. first thing i would do is unplug the black with white stripe wire plug coming out of the cdi box(that is the ground kill switch from both the key and the off/on/off switch) and kick that bad boy over!!! who knows you might get lucky.

Thanks! I know it runs because I had it on a beater run before I started fab work. I am going to run a really small battery just to run the basics.
