After our Thanksgiving ride day I put my boat in my friends garage while he was down in Tampa at dealer meeting last week. I get a call on Sunday that the garage door was open. Temps were in teens and 20s during the day and dipping down to single digits at night. The freezing temps are gone and we put the boat in the water today and sure enough have water in the oil. Sick to my stomach. Guess I'm gonna be replacing an engine that has 100hrs on it with a new one.

Oh man, that is so sad!!! I don't even know what to say except I am so sorry. Will you rebuild the engine or drop a new one in? If so where will get a new engine? just curious. Sorry again.

Wow, that's crazy. You'd think a person could catch a break and get away with a night of cold temps. Wonder what busted. What the heck? Geeeez!!

Even though in a garage It looks like the boat was in 20deg temps for about 2.5 days. The boat is at Crosstimbers now and we'll get intouch with Indmar check on options and to get a new one put in. Im not opposed to going the 6.2L Ford just not sure I can swing it $$$ since insurance is not an option.

Man, I feel for you. That is horrible news. Sure hope you find a way to get her back up and running. Try to think positive about how much you are going to like the new engine.

A lesson for those who use some method to keep the boat above freezing such as heaters, light bulbs. Those systems can fail or the power can go out so having a system to alert on system failure is important. That may be as simple as making the rounds but have a plan in place when you are gone. You never know when Murphy's Law happens.

So sorry to hear about this buddy.

Go insurance all the way, your talking close to 5K maybe more if you have the Surf 350 engine.

Ouch, most insurance policies will exclude freeze damage.

Interesting. I'll will have to see if mine does or not. My only stipulation I know about is my boat can't be in the water from November to March for recreation. If the dealer has it or its some sort of repair and needs to be in the water it will be insured.

Taking donations was just a joke..... While this is going to be expensive I'm not as concerned about the money as I am the lost time on the water. Today would have been pretty good to take a couple sets.

If you're going to compete with the kids in Florida you have to ride every opportunity you have.

Maybe a bright side will be the boat just needs new heads, or something, not a new block?

Hoping for the best when you get it in and take it out to really inspect it.

Tyler has plenty of neoprene and a drysuit. He trys to take 2 15-20 minute sets and limit falls. he's usually sweating pretty good after hit set.

I'm thinking just a gasket or at the worst, a new set of heads. If the block is cracked you would likely have oil and water leaking from the block into the hull. Its possible the block failed inwards but not likely.

Work on boat starting today so ill know soon. If it is extensive was quoted 7500 parts and labor for factory replacement. Ouch!

Sadly no. They are there for the casting process. Ive seen plenty rust out, but rarely one pop due to freezing.

Todd, just read this thread big bummer, sorry to hear and I feel your pain, sick to my stomach.
Amazing what a quick hard freeze can do.

Thought this was just a weather thread... Last week 20 and 7 inches of snow , this week 60's and raining. Messing with my winter sports.....

Well that's horrible. Doesn't make sense. Especially on a marine engine that has no coolant.

Like the others here, I am having sympathy pains.

Rant: Really? After decades of having automotive engines adapted for marine use, why don't marine engines drain themselves?

That does suck. I've seen several Chevy engines crack in the valley from freezing. Curious how this is coming.

Yeah Drew, Holiday Inn has been very good for me. I will for sure let you know if we venture down that way.

Glad to hear your making some progress on the repair. So did the freeze get the V-drive or was that alright? Are they replacing the engine or replacing the block?

We think the v drive is ok but Will be pressure testing the v drive once the motor is out to verify. Im hoping its ok, if not its about another 3k.

I believe we are going with a new motor.

You don't typically get snow in April there? It's pretty common around here even into May. Those are usually the storms that tear up trees and power lines. Boating season is still just a dream. But the snow is still awesome, so who needs the lake?
