I did a similar project on my 02 a couple years ago. I love the gator grip floor that I installed, carpet would be very tough to go back too. My advise if your budget allows is have new thicker foam installed on the seats bases and do a three piece rear cover.

Do you know where the side hinges are from, or sizes/info? What about the shock rod arm things?

I looked high and low with some trial and error before ordering stainless hinges from ATL Marine. They are 24" offset stainless 2.5" piano hinges. I ended up cutting them down to about 18". Have the part number somewhere around here - you have to go through a dealer for them. I looked EVERYWHERE before going through the dealer.... (Thanks to Jake {Beat Taco} for helping to hunt around too.)

I used 12" gas struts and got the ball mounting brackets from an RV parts store. I think I'm going to bump up to either a stronger holding force or a longer strut because these ones are not holding consistently like they should. The upholstery shop just threw them in so they may have been on their way out to begin with.

If you want I can send you some pics of how it's setup. I absolutely love it compared to the 1 piece.

Sorry I am slow to post but this was just brought to my attention. The picture at the top looks to be for a Supra 242. If this is correct, it is our part number for the hinge is 100586. It is a stainless steel hinge, 2 12" H x 24" L.

Yes, that's the right number and dimensions - that is actually 2-1/2" H.

Used tape to transfer lines of hinge over to cushion so everything would line up.

You can see here where the hinge has been shortened. I had to do this because my cushions taper down in the back and the hinge would have stuck up and done some serious damage to anyone sliding across it.

I may get some extra vinyl and wrap the hinges so there is nothing showing. They sit are low and subtle enough that no one said anything all summer about them. I'm probably the only one who noticed...

I was dreading pulling all the staples out, this is usually the worst part. I bought this awesome tool. Was able to remove the skin this skin in a few minutes..

Those hinges are expensive $59 each?!?!...Does the 3 panels really make any difference?

The XLV came with three sections but never thought about it. There is no reason to open the engine section so the person sitting there was never bothered. Safer also, no large hole for someone to fall into with potential moving parts and hot surfaces.

Before I removed the big one piece, I got inside with a sharpie, straight edge and flash light and marked it on the bottom where the cuts should be. Lined it up with the edges of the pylon frame/support that goes down on the sides of the engine - where the divider/support walls mount. I didn't make sure they were the same size, just eyeballed it and they had to have been close since the engine is hopefully dead center.

The upholstery shop actually made the cuts after foam was pulled off the backer fiberglass(?) panels. I had 95% of my foam replaced on the whole upholstery job so they didn't have to worry about the foam cuts. I emphasized that I wanted a super tight fit on the 3 deck cushions - minimal gap at the seams.

If you are reusing your existing foam you may want to do a thin/soft layer of new foam over the tops (there was a name for it but can't recall what) to fill in anything lost during the cut. Keep the cushions nice and snug.

I also had them sew on pull straps in the corners so I didn't have to worry about handles sticking up or recessed cut outs to grab when opening the compartments.

(And now's a good time to do something about that pesky pylon sticking too far up!)

Back when I was in college, I used to do my own boat interiors and they came out pretty good. I wasn't doing anything too crazy or entering any shows, but it was fun for me. Just try to hide most of your seams and stay away from real intricate styles.

The one thing that I learned was you need a commercial grade sewing machine for the marine vinyl, I ate up four different standard home type sewing machines before I finally got access to a real commercial unit.

And definitely make your own piping! Good luck!!

Oh that's easy, I sucked at the sewing part. I have a machine but can't seem to get good straight lines. Probably user error. May have to try it again.

Parrot, don't try to "fix" seams, its a one way pass thru.

Mark the backside that you have up facing you with chalk or lightly with ball point pen (can cause big problems with ink bleed through on lighter colors), hand start your seam and go a nice constant speed and just follow your line. Let the machine do the work. I used to mark with a dashed line with white chalk.

And most of all, practice a bunch with just two pieces of vinyl until you get comfortable, you will need to get the muscle memory down first. I sat down at a machine about a year ago after not doing it for about 15 years, stunk at first, then picked it back up after about 20 minutes. So just start burning through some practice pieces and when you are tired, stop.

That's great advice for just about any involved project right there. I've screwed up more stuff and gotten injuries from pressing on when I should have walked away for a day. Put a drill right through my hand one time when I did this.

LOL. Best advice for any project. Not as bad as a drill but I stapled through my finger into a floor joist late into a wiring job. Pulling it out of the wood wasn't bad. Pulling out of the finger however...

Start with non-backed vinyls (the fuzzy stuff)

Use the correct needle and try a Teflon foot

Use the correct thread, call one of the vinyl suppliers, tell them what you are doing and ask which thread to use.

Vinyl likes longer stitch lengths, start with 6-8 per inch

Use a seam sealer product on your final pieces - helps make it water tight

Tension affects how much tension or tightness is in the bobbin thread and the spool thread. To figure out how to set your tension, stitch a straight line on a scrap piece of the vinyl that you are using. If the tension is correct, the stitches on top of the vinyl and the stitches underneath will be equally tight. If one side is tighter than the other, make small adjustments until they are equal

Put a piece of thin tissue paper underneath your pieces if they start dragging, usually isn’t too much of a problem, but certain machines (tables) will cause drag

I've done both, the self sticking adhesive is much easier, peel and stick, which makes it easier to install.

This replaces the carpet, it's designed to be glued down. Kinda of like putting carpet over carpet. :)

Hydro doesn't absorb water or stains, you just rinse it off with the hose and done, unlike carpet..

Is it difficult to get the vinyl to conform to the curved corner back rest pieces? I assume the vinyl is flat when you sew it and I would think it would not want to lay tight against the corner back rest parts?

You mentioned you were going to leave out the piping. What purpose does it serve anyways? Is it just for looks?

Also, what is used around the perimeter of the back of the seats? Kind of looks like a band with piping or something that gets stapled all the way around.

Just decorative, hides the seam, the band around the back is thicker piping.. Just rope inside some vinyl, there's also hiddem which is used on the seat bottoms, you staple inside it to hide the staples..

I took a home economics class 25 years ago and learned to sew a surf shaped pillow... :)

A few years ago I had the skins made for my previous boat (Seadoo challenger 1800) and installed them, so I have some experience installing the vinyl and working it to remove the wrinkles. For the sewing part I've been watching you-tube sewing videos and reading some Google searches on upholstery. The rest is just trial and error, I took one of the smaller cushions apart and examined how they put it together.

I keep having to stop myself from going back and redoing some of my first pieces. For the most part they look really good, not 10/10, probably closer to 7.5/10. 99% of people aren't going to notice a few of my stitches are off or my lines aren't perfectly straight unless I pointed them out...

I have my girl-friend review each piece I no longer point out the mistake(s), if she spots it them I redo it... :)

Yeah, I was starting to wonder the same thing myself...With how well it is coming out, I am beginning to think you've been sandbagging us :)

My $0.02 on some of your first pieces, See how much material you have left when you are done. If you have a bunch left over (I always do!) redo the first couple of pieces as you have the time, (unless you live in Florida!) and you can knock them out fast now!!

You are doing such a good job, you may want to add in a custom embroidered piece like I did last year on my sub enclosure. Just have a couple of extras made, they are cheap to do.

Just use your current complete skins as templates and then go from there. You can shape foam, and use adhesive and a hot air gun (not a hair dryer)

20+ years ago and just on my own projects. Did it because a) I enjoyed it and b) I was broke putting myself through college. Had a lot more time back then!!

Used to do some pretty crazy stripes with a lot of different colors, kinda of looked like a Dennys on acid!! And I have zero pics as we used to have something called "film" in our cameras!

But my wife has been bothering me to set her up a sewing station, and after seeing your thread, I know which machine she will be getting!

On a 10 year old plus boat, that is to be expected. I always plan on replacing the seat foam and try to save the seat back foam if possible. It is amazing how expensive the heavier density foams are. I still find it interesting that the vinyl itself is relatively cheap, but that foam is $$$

I can check, but for the lower seats in the main area I've spent around 160$ for the foam. I haven't checked the rear sun pad yet, that's probably $200ish, if you redid all the foam your probably in that $800-1000 range..

For the vinyl that sounds about right, I over ordered my accent colors and redone several pieces. Probably in $600-$700 range..

I called Gary up and asked what he recommended, it's also one of the heaviest(37 oz) and more expensive..I didn't end up ordering from him though, the website is pretty crappy and he's located in Seattle? He has foam as well, I planned to get everything from there but I kept missing his hours..I found two places locally so I get it next day..

For foam, on the seat bottoms, you want the heavier density foams, 2-3 lb/CF they use more material per unit of measure so they are more expensive. For seat backs use the 1-2 lb/CF foams

Of course there is different thicknesses also.

The 37 oz vinyl is pretty heavy (usually that is good) as long as it has the correct exposure and anti-microbial additives, it being made in the USA is a good sign.

The stuff that I use is around 32-34 oz Vinyl.

Also, parrothd, you may have mentioned it, but would be awesome if you could at some point put together a step by step "how to" thread. The more pics and/or videos the better. Maybe pick one seat back/bottom and show from start to finish. Tips, pitfalls, how to make the vinyl conform, remove wrinkles, how to do it right the first time, etc. It would make for a great sticky. I know I'll be tackling this sometime soon...

When I do sundecks, I don't do any stripes, just one solid color without seams, it helps them live longer and is more comfortable to lie on.

Hurry up with those photos, I am getting bored and digging into too many other projects!!!!

I replaced the main carpet area, where you walk. I had planned on adding a diamond turf pattern to the ski locker/bow area but if sell it, that's out. For my older style LSV I used 2 sheets, pulled the old carpet off, used a sander/scraper to clean the glue off. Lined it up and then peel and stick(used tape to hold one side, the rolled and peeled the other to keep everything aligned). Also used a heat gun to help around the edges and stubborn areas. Probably took about 1-2 hours to get done...

I was able to carefully remove the the covers of my 06 LSV and repair the seems..I reused everything, the center cushion is to far gone, but can wait till winter...

When I checked around that's the heaviest and was most expensive. I reused the foam on the sides/backs, if you use a steamer the foam will expand to it's original shape. The seat foam may need to be replaced, you can try steaming those as well, on mine you could tell where people sat. Once you replace 1 or 2 cushions the rest will look different so you'll end up doing them all. For the seats cushions I used Firm.

Got the info- thanks. I'm only replacing the ski locker covers as the seams let go and they have several tears also. The rest of the interior is in average to above average shape. Again - nice work.

To make life easier you may want to replace it all with one color per cushion. Save a lot of time and money..

I was kneeling on the sun deck as I covered the boat for the last time after winterizing and heard a loud "pop". Lifted the cover where my knee was and a nice big spider web crack in the vinyl. It wasn't even freezing yet. I guess I will be replacing sooner than later. Glad to have this thread.
