Need help for setting up the wake for boarding on a 2011 outback v. Right now I have 750's in the rear and then 400 in front locker. It is kinda lippy whith every thing full, seams like the wake rolls over. Riding at 65 ft and 21.5 mph. I can jump toe side and heel. I just want a big clean wake and would love to ride at 70 feet. Does the wake get better. Wife said this boat has to last 2 more years. Trying to learn flips and want a bigger tranny and tips?

Bow weight, lots more bow weight.

If you are at 1500 in the rear id guess you need a minimum of 1000 in the bow. That's gonna have to get close to the boat's limits, though.

Id play around with running less rear weight. With your existing bags you might try a 750 in bow and 400 in rear (fill other 750 equal amount) and see if titty like that wake more.

I have no direct experience with the outback v ... Just think your front to rear ratio needs to be closet to 50/50. Most sc boats like to be closer to 60/40.

So run 800 up front and like 600 and 600 in rear

Bahaha .... dang autocorrect. But yea, Dusty mom does like to ride a big "wake" :)

Shockthis, you can start with 800, 600/600 and see what you think. It gotta be an improvement from where its at. If you don't like it, reduce the rear weight until you start getting closer to 50/50.

I'm surprised the boat gets on plane the way you are currently running it.

You're riding too slow, especially with that kind of weight in the boat. Kick it up to 23-24 at least; 23 is a good speed to learn inverts. I ride 25 at 65ft, behind an LSV though. Behind my Supra I rode 25-26 at 70ft, but the wake wasn't quite as wide. The wake will break further back and you'll have a cleaner wake. There is absolutely no reason you need to go to 70ft unless you start landing 5ft in the flats consistently, and I can't imagine the wake is good that far back at the speed you're going.

That speed just sounds like you don't care about your knees or neck or any other body part really. I won't ride over 22. My LSV we run the 650 IBS up front with the stock gravity three with the wake plate at half at 22 mph and 70 ft. I would definitely NOT speed up to learn an invert. If anything, ditch the weight and slow down

I've been wakeboarding for 16 years, more seriously for about the last 8 since I bought my old Supra (I'm 28 ). I've been to pro clinics, competed in local competitions, and ride with some people that are significantly better than me. During all of those, I haven't known anybody that is an advanced rider and rides under 23, most ride closer to 25 like I do. To each his own, but that's my experience and that would be my advice in his situation.

If you're going to run that slow, I agree there is too much weight in the boat. You don't need a monster wake to do inverts. I learned backrolls before I had a wake boat behind my 17ft Glastron I/O with no tower. I run my stock 400 up front and about 500 in each locker, wake plate at 3/4 up (1/4 up from flat, if that's how you refer to it). I like a steep wake that gives me good pop.

Since you have conflicting advice, I'd try each suggestion and see what works best for you.

And actually lately I've really liked 24.5 for some reason behind my LSV instead of 25, not sure exactly why. I lightened up the weight in the rear lockers though by about 150lbs each. Was at 650, now at 500 as I mentioned. I've been playing with the weight and speed trying to get it just right.

LOL yeah I'm still relatively young and I bounce back easily. Plus if you want to compare me to a pro wakeboarder, I'm built more like Rusty than anybody else lol, so my body is normally relatively resiliant to injury.

I had one season about 5 or 6 years ago where I was consistently twisting my ankle while learning my tantrum. As I've gotten "older", I've chilled it out on tricks that get me hurt lol. But in general at the speeds I ride I really haven't had any injuries in years, but I am also not really trying to progress much from where I'm at. I thought I wanted to be a great wakeboarder, then I realized I didn't want to get hurt as much and I'm content being a somewhat good wakeboarder. I've never really been hurt more due to speed, really just on awkward landings.

Yeah but speed can really intensify an awkward landing lol

25 seems VERY fast to me. Pro's like Rusty who ride with 5-6k of ballast ride at those speeds. I prefer to ride around 22MPH. I was at a pro clinic with Kyle Ratray and he mentioned that since switching to a G23 he had slowed down his speed because there was no need to go 25 to keep the wake clean. There are pro's who ride around the 23 mark too.

To each his own, but I also prefer to ride a little slower, and when we are learning new tricks we slow it down to 21 or so.

I agree that 25+ mph sounds like its flying.

Wax, have you put a GPS to that speed? It sounds like you also run rear heavy, maybe forcing you to ride that fast? I'd bet you could slow the speed down if you added some weight to the bow.

I know each boat is different but our boat is typically setup at 23 - 24 mph with 2300 - 2700 lbs. Riding between 75 and 80 ft. Typically, the more weight and line length, the more speed needed.

Here are 2 examples of 80 ft and 24'ish mph.

Not with the LSV, but with my Supra we used a GPS instead of the speedometer.

During clinics, I've normally ridden 23-24 behind the "pro" boats weighed down. Same with comps. I personally just like riding faster, and apparently so does everybode else I know. I'm shocked that this many people are riding that slow honestly. I'll try it and see what it's like, but I haven't ridden under 23 or 24 as long as I can remember. Again, same with the more advanced guys I ride with. The best guy I've ridden with rides about 24, and he might as well be pro in my book. The other guy that might as well be pro rides 25, but he's squirly and goes ridiculously huge.

With the LSV I've just been playing with speed and weight until the wake is just right. Right now, thats at 24.5 with about 450-500 in back lockers each and 400 ski locker. I'd love to try a LSV with IBS to see the difference, I've been considering one.

After hearing all you guys going so slow, I'm definitely going to try it out and see what it's like. When thinking physics, faster is good for soft landings in my opinion. However, that is more contingent on your speed into the wake than the boat's actual speed.

I'd def try getting some more bow weight. Closer to a 50/50 ratio. That should let you slow it down.

Do yall not land way out in the flats?

I have noticed with my 21v the more weight you add the faster the boat has to run in order to get a clean wake.
also the longer the rope the faster you have to run to get the wake clean up at the distance you are riding.
I was taught to weight my boat then run it with no wakeboarder pick the speed and rope lenth that i think is comfortable than adjust based on this.

you want to cross the wake around 2' infront of where the white wash starts on your wake.

If you are crossing in the white wash and do not want to go faster or shorten your rope you have to much wight. Speeding up and slowing down will change where the white wash is forming on the wake.

On my 21v I run around 600 to 700 lb in each rear compartment (1200 to 1400 in the back) front center bag 1200 lb plus an extra 600 in the nose. weight like this i have to run a minimum of 23.6 mph. (The wake is huge at this speed and weight and is most likely more than i really need but there's a couple of guys in my riding group that absolutely kills it like this)

(This setup is good with 4 people total in the boat. we change the amount of water weight depending on the amount of passangers we have in the boat also.)

We like to ride at 24 mph with a 65' rope plus 5' handle.
We start playing a little bit with riding at 70' plus a 5' handle but we have to speed up to 25.4 mph.

Some people say it is stupid and waste gas by weighting a boat like this. I can do all my trick with no weight in the boat and less speed but I do not think it look as good and in my mind i think it feels better.

G23 is a very different beast, you can get a better wake by going slower, the hull is designed that way...

Wax my favorite setup for the lsv was all 3 stock 400 bags full, a 750 in the bow and a 750 in the main cabin seating area. I'd run at 24.2 at 65ft with the wake play all the way up.

In my 02 I run a strictly bow weight. Locker full then a 400 on top of the front seats, wake plate all the way up. It damn near swamps the nose coming off of plane actually you half to roll out of it. Usually there are 4 in the cabin. I still need to load up the rear a bit to try it but I am running out of summer quickly. Oh and I ride at 22.5 at 70 feet.

See this thread for my wake.

Mark, you do pretty well for having such a shallow, sorry and not very big, wake. No offense, I'm actually impressed with that tantrum on that wake, it looked good. Don't think I could have done it on that wake. Get some weight in the back of that boat man! Not very much pop it doesn't seem...but you look good nonetheless!

As far as the speed differences, first thing to check is if the speedo is accurate and calibrate it if not. I usually ride at 22 or so. Over 23 feels too fast for me. It appears that most pros (not including Lyman and Vandall) ride around 24. For me, I am more concerned with the wake shape than the speed.

Also, as mentioned, SC boats seem to like bow weight. Although, this may be an illusion. Follow me here: For example, if a boat is loaded 50/50 and runs say 1200#, the wake may be great. However, add 4 people into the mix, and that is another 600-700#, and most of the time they sit in the back (not the bow). All of a sudden, the boat is closer to 35/65, running ass heavy, not planing out, and not holding speed very well. One of my buddies has an interesting approach to this phenomenon. He will fill up his bow and belly sacs, and them add weight to the rear until he gets the wake where he wants it, depending on now many folks are in the boat.

wolffsupra21v is right on with his remarks. The more weight, the faster the boat MUST go to have clean wake. I have also read that the line length should be set so that the rider hits the wake right in front of the curl/wash. That is where the wake will be the steepest.

I have mentioned this before, but technique is the biggest factor. Mine sucks, but guys that are much better than me have landed nice 3s, big tantrums, perfect HS backrolls, and even raleys behind my boat running less than 1000# of ballast.

100% agree. Like I mentioned before, my buddy and I learned our backrolls (along with other non invert tricks) behind my 17' I/O without a tower. It's honestly just improving your technique, and then figure out what works best for you. As you can see, nobody rides the same speed or setup. It's all what feels best to you.

Personally, after hearing how everybody else rides soooooo sloooooow, lol, I will play with slowing it down and see how I like it. Who knows, maybe I don't need to ride as fast behind this lsv as I did behind my Supra.

Honestly, barely anybody wakeboards or surfs on my lake and people think it's amazing that I don't need a rope to surf and that I can do a 360 on a surfboard and wakeboard...that's the kind of people I ride with most lol. I have very little drive for progression with those conditions unfortunately!

Okay guys, I made a Google+ album with some of my wake photos. Keep in mind that this is a 2001 Outback DD. The photos from 2006 are shortly after I got it and we didn't know what we were doing with the wake. The photos from 2009 and 2010 show a better wake. IIRC, we were running about 1000-1200# of ballast and running in the 21.5-22.0mph range. We have tweaked on it some more since then, but I have no photos of it. Also all of us guys are tall, ranging from about 5'-10" to about 6'-3".
