View Full Version : Steering Wheel Rattling

I've noticed the few times while under near full/full stock ballast load that the steering wheel vibrates heavily and makes strange grinding noises at the helm while coming out of the hole. Once at surfing or wakeboard speed it goes away, but is still concerning and wondering if this should be looked at by the dealer to see if it's covered under warranty before it gets tucked away. It's never been an issue while under light load and I'm curious if others have had this problem.

Mine was doing the same thing this Saturday. I was going to monitor it more closely on Sunday but we had a prop strike on Saturday evening. It sure sounds like the rack and pinion is slipping or something.

On the first weekend we had it, it seemed like the rack and pinion had a catch in it but that's gone away.

+1. My '05 LSV does this same thing. I always chalked it up to strong forces on the rudder that translated up the steering cable, but I'm not sure that it's normal.

My behavior hasn't changed in the past couple months of use and it just started this past weekend so I don't think it's normal. My I/O never did it in 6 years... I know he design isn't the same but the rack&pinion and cable assembly is much the same. My passengers kept looking at the helm when I pulled someone up, not good.

Yeah, mine doesn't do this...only time the wheel shakes is when the bass is bumping.

i would look into a warranty claim

My new 2013 LSV also makes the noise some time under hard acceleration and lots of weight. No steering shake though. Sound goes away once under way.

Hmm... yeah, it sure doesn't seem right. One more thing to add to the list when I drop it off next.

Please let us know what they say and do to fix it....maybe that would help me fix mine also.

+1 here for someone else who's boat does this. And as stated above, once slightly underway, vibrations and sounds go away. Always considered it normal as boat is always under load when making the noise.

Mine does this too. It does it when my steering wheel is not completely centered coming out of the hole. It makes a sound like a cable stretching. It has always done this so I thought it was normal. It only does it when I'm pulling someone out of the water. This is my first inboard...

Follow Up - I dropped it off a couple weeks ago before the 1 year warranty ran out to address the noise and vibration issue at the helm. Well, their guys talked to the SC guys and apparently this is 'normal' and the boat was never dropped in the water to test. They mentioned that it is due to the heavy cavitation around the rudder and can be minimized by turning the wheel slightly so the wash only hits one side of the rudder. My prop doesn't have as much as a water mark on it and inquired if the pitch affects this to which they said "no". It's not the answer I was looking for, but, I will take it for now. I got the board rack swivel pins replaced so it wasn't a total loss taking it in.

Had the same thing with my LSV. It always seemed to do it to me if the wheel/rudder was turned and you really went down hard on the throttle. My service guys basically said the same as yours. I started easing into the throttle and once I knew the rudder was perfectly straight then hammer down on it and it wouldn't rattle. My 21v has never done this odly enough.
