Can't go wrong with those. Others have gone to the Polk DB ones and had some success. The stock kenwoods your year were nothing to write home about. Might think over giving Brian at Exile a call. Sometimes there are deals for guys on this board. Keep us posted and include pics.

Agreed, the JL 650 is top notch. A buddy just got a set from Earmark for his side-by-side and was really impressed with the quality.

Not a bad speaker at all. JL makes some really nice equipment.

Now if it were me, Id call brian and get the Exile XM65's...Things sound amazing. Compare if you can.

I recently replaced all the stock Kenwoods in my boat for the Polk db651s and got all three pairs for $180 total on ebay. They sound great to me but I'm well aware they are no Exile, WS, or JL. In my opinion, for the money, they can't be beat. However, if I had the money, I'd go with Exile or Wetsounds - both great equipment.

Cheaper here, with a cooler looking grill too:

Yes, cheaper from a non JL Audio dealer as compared to Crutchfield or any other legit authorized JL Audio dealer. Crutchfield and legit dealers offer a full manufacturer warranty. The unauthorized dealer gets you no/zip/nadda manufacturer warranty.

David, does JL offer a HLCD tower speaker? I don't think I have seen one, and if not, does anyone have experience with JL sound from board lengths?

Jeff,
When people get to hear the JL Audio in-boat speakers (MX-650s for example) in a direct side-by-side comparison to other in-boat coaxials they are flat out superior in musicality.
But it is not a speaker that projects to wake distance, much like any good in-boat coaxial.
The larger JL Audio 7.7" M770 'T' series is an excellent surf and at rest speaker, but again, not what you would want at wake range as compared to a larger HLCD.
JL Audio does not have an HLCD.
They do have an 8.8" coaxial with an oversized 1.25" dome tweeter. They are working on a tower version with a corresponding pod. Who knows when that will come to fruition. While not an HLCD, one would expect that this speaker will have large enough surface area at a true 8.8"s and a powerful enough conventional dome at 1.25" to hang in there at wake range. It's bound to be a TKO for surfing and at rest.

Well im really leaning towards the wets sounds.. only problem i have with the tower speakers is i would like to keep my roswell set-up.. mainly for the lights  haha, do they sell just the speakers without the cans for the tower. As of now i just put a new kenwood marine deck in, if any ones looking for speakers im looking to sell what ever i remove, taking out the kenwood sub also now

You can replace the existing tower speakers with Wetsounds XS-650 coaxials. The WS XS-650 is a conventional in-boat coaxial and not an HLCD, thus is not near as powerful as a Wetsounds Rev8 Proaxial HLCD speaker for example. But as conventional coaxials go on the tower, the WS XS-650 is about as good as it gets. A touch aggressive which is what you want for projection. Built rugged. Very dynamic. With two pair properly powered surf range is definitely covered. Wake range will still be a little weak in the face of engine exhaust with any number of conventional 6.5" coaxials on the tower.
The conversion to the XS-650 will depend on the particular combo bar version that you have whether blunt nose pods where the speaker is slightly recessed into the pod or tapered pods where the speaker is suspended internally with a 'U' bracket. Two very different installation exercises. Neither is a drop-in.
In the final analysis, I would recommend a pair of Wetsounds Rev8s or Rev10s. Then, for certain, you'll be satisfied long term. You can always get another halogen light bar for around $200 plus downcasting & diffused tower courtesy lights are separately available also.

You might need to look at the Kicker product if I understand what you want to do. Check this out. Phil may be able to add more on this one.

Oh Yeah!! There goes the "Zipper Effect"

I had all Kicker speakers in my '02 with (6) in-boats and (4) towers in DIYwake's cans with a 12" JL W6 in a custom sealed enclosure (that the guys on this board helped my size) and I LOVED that system.

But in my current boat I just finished a complete Wetsounds speaker (4) Icon8s and (6) XS-650 in-boats (along with the super awesome tacky as hell RGBs!!!) the 12" JL W6, all powered with Kicker's new marine amps and I gotta tell you -- WOW! what a difference, I LOVE listening to that system as much as I do my home system which runs some pretty decent Motion 40s

My buddy has an Exile system and I think you would have been happy with the Kenwood setup but will be REAL happy (and a little poorer) with a full blown Exile system.

Until this summer, I had thought these two "True Marine Speaker" companies were just hype, but let us know what you and mostly your friends think when you are done.

I'm happy to hear you found a great solution for your system. I mentioned the Kicker option above based on what you were trying to salvage from what you had. Kicker can be excellent and that application works for lots of folks. But I'm sure you will be thrilled with Exile as many others on here are. Here's some recent threads (including my experience recently). Hope it all works out great for you!

Yeh i thought the same thing, but after reading and doing some homework, i think i made a good choice.. What i am going with is 4 xm9's on the tower .. 6 sx65m in boat and the 12'' xi12d all powered by exile amps.. I cant wait to order it and get it all installed and maybe get a few more runs to the lake yet before the cold sets in up in the boonies here!

after reading your article kane the biggest thing that's selling me is the customer support, there amazing and very helpful

That will be a sweet sounding system.

Don't forget to properly size your power supply system wires and distro blocks.

It's a good time to add an easily accessible pull out fuse (by the amps) and circuit breaker (by the battery connection) as if something does go wrong while out on the lake, it is easy to find and fix.

Also, don't forget the LEDs (looks like your boat is already running blue LEDs) after a day of boarding, my kids cant wait for it to start getting dark so I will turn on our RGBs, all that money on boat, ballast and a sound system and they want to see the tacky LEDs (they do look great!)

Don't forget to post pics of the install.

That's almost my exact system!! Except I'm running Infiniti interiors, but changing them over to exiles very soon. It is one loud ass stereo. I love it. I was fortunate enough to talk with Brian from exile for a while at the Texas jam this past weekend and man, he's a great guy. Very knowledgable and helpful with things to look out for. Great products, great people! That's what exile is.

Just ordered about 15 more strips of blue led's for all the speakers and what not.. still waiting for fed ex to show up with the goods, then i can devote my night to beer and an audio install!

As far as wires and all that i think im good.. doing all 4ga for power/ground, 12ga speakers, 8ga for sub and each amp will be fused separately.. also putting in dual batterys and perko switch.. going to be a alot for a one man crew but i love doing this stuff!

Current state of the project, some wiring done on tower/amp rack, just waiting for stuff.. Will continue to post pics as i get-r-done!

what i did was cut those pieces of wood to the size i wanted, then lined them up on some fiberglass bracing behind the carpet.. idk if that is a xlv thing to have those bump outs, but after that i traced the block out on that carpet, cut the shape out and removed carpet and remaining glue from carpet.. before installing the blocks i coated them in a rustoleum rubber sealent, then i pre-drilled two holes in each piece of wood and the boat also to make sure nothing was behind that bracing.. after that i lathered my pieces of rubber coated wood with the epoxy gorilla glue and secured them to the boat with 2 stainless screws in each board and let sit for a day or so..

Now to attach the amp rack i made, i simply just screwed the amp rack to the boards with 4 stainless screws then on the bottom of the rack i used some stainless L shaped brackets behind the board and secured it to the floor.. its pretty solid in there.. see how it is after i get the amps on there.. im also going to elevate the amps off board like a 1inch or so to run the wires underneath the amps and blue some blue led's under there..

You probably aren't too concerned with overheating like I am down here in Texas. But if you are, what I did was cut out the area on my amp rack behind my amp then put small bolts coming through the amp rack to work like studs. I then spaced the amps off the rack about a half inch to allow air flow behind and around the amps.

Thats exactly what i want to do, but for other reasons and a lil higher off lol.. 1. For running the wires 2. For putting led's on back side of amp to light it up/outline it.. visual satisfaction lol 3. easier to install/remove without stripping out screw holes

Got some more done on the boat tonight.. got all the speaker wires ran, all the wires to the amp, dual battery wires all done with the perko switch, all thats left is to run some new wires for the sub, finish the box for it and sit back and wait for the goods to come in... apparently when first shipped they got damaged during shipment and now they had to re-ship me out some new stuff so next week hopefully get it all done!!

Howdy guys - Sorry I havent been on here much lately. Been around the country these last few weeks getting my surf on with people.

@ stroke: I think you'll be getting your gear here any day. I got a call from the office last week and they told me a fedex truck was actually in an accident (think smashed) and all our shipments from that day where returned. Our Tech thought it better to reship new goods and not take any chances. Yours and a few other systems got delayed. Really sorry about that considering how far your install is without any gear! Nice work!

@ chawk: Nobodies system is lame. You just have to remember, when you get involved with those big tie-ups your part taking in the GO BIG scene. No matter what gear you rock... It's all good! Trust me.. I've seen it all :) and your doing just fine. Although I would punt that 2nd sub you got connected with 42ga speaker cable. wahoo!

@N2G: Your system pounds. It was great to meet you guys. Be safe with all that partying you guys do!
