I'm going to throw in the towel on telling myself I'm going to pull the boat to Earmark one day to have it tuned ...

Does anyone know anything about the SMD DD1? My main concern is this ... Does it only detect the amplifier itself sending a clipped signal OR will it also detect distortion coming from upstream that the amplifier then passes on?

My goal would be to use it set gains across the board (as been discussed in many threads). I know it can be done by ear, but i don't trust myself. I've done it by ear and it's loud, just bothered that I don't KNOW it's at full potential.

Is it worth buying or could this be borrowed?

It really works. I have it along with a handheld O-scope and they both display clipping at the same time so it is very accurate.
The tool wll measure clipping from the ipod, source unit, EQ or amplifier.
And you need the corresponding disc. You can go 0db or -5dB or lower. 0dB is a little too conservative. -5dB is okay but leaves a bit more potential for clipping with hotter program material.
If you are well initiated I still prefer tuning by ear with real music rather than a sine wave test tone.

I'd be willing to throw 40 bucks in a paypal account for use of one. Enough of us go in we can all just pass it around. I have a hard time justifying the price simply to use the thing once.

I wouldn't mind sending it to one person and then they send it to the next, as long as it gets back to me eventually. I have no use for it at the moment.
