This could very well be a nonsense question but heard from a neighbor today that when you go to refill your v-drive oil it might need to be refilled from the bottom? I wanted to check and make sure before I tore into it. Thanks

No. You refill thru the breather on top. The breather is removed with a wrench. Remove the dipstick so that it will vent when filling.

I use the vent because it is a larger hole. A small funnel fits nicely.

I fill through the dipstick hole with a small funnel and a rag around the base to catch what doesn't go down

I just hold the bottle about 2 feet above the dipstick hole and pour it perfectly down through the hole without spilling a drop. ;)

Turkey baster works to refill as well thru dipstick hole.

Sounds like your neighbor is thinking about a Mercury Alpha leg, which is filled from the bottom.

Yeah, I hate that when people get them confused.
I ask the wife if "she raised the prop" after it is on the trailer. She always says yep before I pull the boat out. Our signal to each other that we're ready.
