Quick question. I have heard that the impeller needs to be installed in the correct position but have never found any definite answer to this. So which end goes in first. The side that just says Johnson or the end with the dots? Or does it matter?

I think it's talking about which way the fins flex. When the impeller is installed in the housing the fins are bent. They need to be bent according to which way the pump turns.

Doesn't matter, when the pump turns the fins will automatically setup the correct direction..

Let's see if this helps. New johnson impeller user manual instructions.

I did not receive any glycerine with mine. It came in a box with a gasket. I ordered it from skidim. Can I just put dish washing soap on it?

I use anti-sieze compound on the shaft. Petroleum can damage the rubber if left on for a while.

It's so sad that Dusty has left the building as of late. There is so much potential with some of the posts above.

I was just thinking the same thing earlier today...where has Dusty gone?

He's probably working on his wakeboarding while the rest of us sit in the glow of LCD screens. At least that's what it looks like from pics I've seen.

So I will ask, how the hell do you get to the back of the engine on a vdrive? It seems that only a small monkey could get down there and replace the impeller on a 2003 LSV.

On the '06 up the side panels swing down. Very easy to reach just about everything, especially when the exhaust manifolds are cool. When they are not-- not so much.

If folks have ideas on the 03 I would appreciate it. It seems impossible :)

Just did mine, removed the side panel, blower, and then the pump....Sounds like a lot but really only 4 bolts and 2 hoses..

Okay, I am confused about the petroleum products warning. When I winterize my boat and remove the impeller, I cost in it petroleum jelly and store in a Ziploc bag. This warning (and the posts above) warn against that. I was curious where I got my info, and here it is...

Indmar Owner's Manual; Page 7-3; "3. Remove the raw water pump impeller... Lubricate the impeller with Vaseline and seal in an airtight bag."

WTF?!?!

The 2012 indmar manual states the same, and ive been doing this for three years now with the same impeller that has over 300 hours on it and it still looks good .

So why not use it.
Or people aren't lubricating it there drowning it

(Lubricate the impeller with Vaseline and seal in an airtight bag.")

As far as changing the impeller out i just did mine a few months ago. I used a mechanics mirror with an adjustable head to see what i was doing. Then if you get a couple of paint can opener tools from home depot you can slide them between the fins and hook the bottom of the old impeller and pull it out side by side. To put it in i used the oil that came with my impeller and pushed it on as far as i could, then used a rubber mallet to pound it in the rest of the way. Also a note if you have not seen it yet the cover of the pump only goes back on one way so i marked the top for putting it back and getting the gasket seated right. good luck

Fixing to change mine and it's hard to tell which way it should be going. Looks like some fins are angled opposite of others.

I'm done. Not a bad job.

Hardest part is getting the old one started coming out. Once it moves a quarter of an inch it'll pull all the way. It doesn't really matter how it goes in cuz each little fin will rotate to the wider open side of the housing and then get pulled the direction they are going to stay forever. It's amazing the job these little things do.
