I just listed my Outback locally and got a text within 4 hours of listing indicating interest.

They asked me to reply to an email address.

1. Fine I replied.
2. I looked up the area code of the text. It's in Canada. Still ok, no bells and whistles going off yet.
3. Googled the email address. Got hits on scams.

So I'm pretty sure how this will play out. Lets find out. Waiting for the reply saying they'll pay more and only with specific payment method, etc. etc. etc.....

Just wish someone could track these people down and show up at their front door. Or better yet, get their bank account and suck it dry.

With VoIP technology nowadays its likely not even in Canada. More like Nigeria or something like that. I went though the same thing selling my boat. It's funny to read the messages and the improper English and word placement etc....

I'm all too aware of this, as my work puts me neck deep in it. We can basically manipulate almost anything we want.

However, the English on the text seemed fine so far.

Thanks for getting back to me, i just wanted to make sure nothing is been left out. I will be buying this for the price you have listed it for. Payment will be sent using PayPal and i will handle the PayPal surcharge as well. I will arrange with a shipping company to have this picked up at your location once i have paid as i am out of town at the moment. Am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making are restricted,so you can send me your PayPal email account so that i can send the payment at once and its easy to sign up for one just log on to www.paypal.com ,i will be responsible for the pick up charges Note: i'll also include the Shipping company's fee so kindly Get back to me with your PayPal email account so i can proceed with the payment thanks

Is it me or is the English getting better?

When you place an add, spell out some of the numbers instead of using numbers for many things, especially phone numbers. Eight 1 3- 2 One 4, for example. It really cuts down on spam and scams.

By the way, if you wire me $1000, I can get my country to release my inheritance from probate and I will be able to pay your asking price plus $1500 if you will ship it to my address at the shipyard in NYC. Payment will be through certified funds of paypal and will be released to your account upon the boat arriving at the shipyards. Thank you for you time.

I put my boat up for sale a month or so ago. I have gotten calls from people or companies for a "small" fee that will help me sell my boat......

Also a bunch of organizations that want me to "donate" my boat to their fine organization.

Its a scam.. Everytime I list something for sale (anything over $2000), I seem to get the same txt messages with the similar instructions. I usualy tell them to western union me 1/2 of my asking price and I will promise to send them the boat plus the other half of my selling price as a bonus. Ha Ha ha Tit for tat.

All my ads say "Local Sale & Pick up only"

After that kind of email, I kindly ask them to eat poo and die. That usually stops the additional emails.

Replied. Told them I sold it to someone else for cash.

Tried to file a complaint with gmail. Filled out the form and tried to submit. Said there was something wrong with the form and it didn't tell me what I was supposed to change/add/delete.

Wow! That guy is still looking for a boat!! Because when I sold my Schiada back in '03, he contacted me and when I sold my '03 Natique four years later, he contacted me again, and I am about to list a couple of boats on a couple different sites....I wonder if he will also want to buy mine????

That's part of the greatness of the interweb, I also love the Craig'slist questions in a response to an ad that has everything listed, including the price, hours or mileage and "NO TRADES" in bold letters and it seems that I get every smack wanting to trade me some old POS motorcycle or station wagon.

Why is it they always want to know the paypal info. It's not like they can do anything with it unless they know your password (or can figure it out) is there? I'm not about to start publicizing my info. to just anybody for kicks but how bad would it be if they did get the paypal email address? Just wondering?

They will send you a fake Paypal invoice with fake links. Looks legit as can be.

So if you are diligent and only access your paypal account directly from the website (and not through their phony links) you'd know right away they are scammers? That's kinda an old trick but i guess people still fall for it?

Or they actually pay for the item and then open a dispute via Paypal and then force a partial refund or all.. Paypal eBay always sides with the buyer with disputes even if your add say no returns no warranties.. I learned it the hard way with the last cell phone via sold via eBay PayPal.. Never again, cash only now!

I don't recall the details specifically. his started through a Paypal invoice but his mistake was not paying attention to the bank escrow. The Paypal invoices and sites were investigated and deemed "nearly legitimate". It was 8 or 9 years back.

I just listed a fridge on cl. I forgot to check the box that says no email contact. in 36hrs, I received 15 different emails asking me to send information to an email address. stupid me and stupid people. I did receive one text that was of the same variety from a nevada area code. first one ever of that.. lots of truth to spelling out part of the phone number, but I think even beyond that spacing the numbers differently as I had one number spelled..
