I just renewed my boat insurance and my annual premium increased over 10%!!! What's the deal, was some law passed making boat insurance more expensive? Is this a result of some Obamacare initiative?

I just got new insurance a couple weeks ago. Got a better deal actually but I'm not sure how good my rate was. I believe this one was under 500, maybe, can't quite remember.

Time to go shopping for insurance. Safeco priced me out of their market a few years back and saved $900 a year for all my stuff. Sometimes they do it more subtly until years latter when you compare insurance.

I just had my boat insurance go down this year. Even my deductible went away, with disappearing deductible.

I am with Ski Safe. No increases that I have seen. I pay $282/yr.

Hmmmm I went from 463 a year to 519 and I'm with boatUS. I'll give them a call later today if I remember. I just renewed last night due to it expiring but I can cancel and sign on with someone else at any time right?

I'm paying $500 / year right now, but it's time to renew. Funny this came up, because I put all my insurance papers in my work bag today so that I can go through it and make some phone calls.

I just got off the phone with my current insurance company (Boater's Insurance Agency) and Ski Safe.
My current coverage is increasing to $598 for the year. I have a $500 deductible and $100k liability coverage.
I can get the same coverage through Ski Safe for $400 per year. For $425, I can get the disappearing deductible which means it decreases every year I don't have a claim and liability is increased to $300k.

I think this is a no brainer, I'll be making a switch. I'm going to call around and get a few more quotes too. Anyone have any suggestions for other companies?

progressive and i'm right around $430 for coverage. don't know the specifics, but it's what the bank demanded and they said they require a lot more than the basic state limits.. It did jump around $125 dropping the supra and adding a new boat.

Definitely price Progressive, Boat US and I think Allstate is getting aggressive in marketing boat coverage-- one of the big ones anyway-- think it was Allstate. Mine went up about $30 so I didn't shop it this year. We should all find a way to get our boat insurance from one place-- maybe Dusty could help?

I went with US Boats as i have been using them for years.

My insurance went up 50 for the year but then my boat value doubled as well.

So far the only one I've found that's competitive with Ski Safe is Gieco. I'm still waiting on BoatUS to send me the quote, but it looks like I'll be going with Ski Safe.

There has to be a moomba forum discount! Insurance is a state, not fed, regulated thing isn't it?

I dug mine up. I was at 528 with Allstate and switched to safeco for 477. 300k liability and full coverage on boat.

ours is 404.00 through safeco with 500K liability and full coverage on a 2012 boat, plus 7k in extras plus 2200 in trailer etc. etc.

My houses and autos are all through safeco as well.

the problem with insurance are that there are soooo many moving parts to an individual quote where what might be right for one person will be completely out of the ball park for someone else.. between prior claims, boat value, credit score, insurance score, state of residency, kept at home vs stored, liability limits and on and on...

this same debate comes up once a year on a cycle forum I belong to and there it ends up being the 20-somethings bitching about high rates and pissed that the olders are getting cheaper rates..

Started comparing mine in 2007 did not change till end of 2008. At the time a spreadsheet was my friend.
2 cars
1 boat
1 pwc
1 personal house
3 rental houses
3 rental condos
1 small business policy with 2 locations.

Comparing from one co. to another is hard without apples to apples.

Still have 3 insurance co and 2 agents, would love to have one of each. Seems some companies like some policies over others.

I'm with skisafe. Mine went up about 30$ so I called an ask why, now its only up 10 bucks?

One company for house, vehicles, boat - multi policy discount in there somewhere. Boat is about $30ish a month. Although I'm wondering what that is going to look like come renewal time this year.

Don't sweat one PD only claim too much. You'd be surprised how the numbers work out on this kind of thing.

Ok so I talked to Boat US and they told me that everyone's rates went up due to abnormal weather conditions or something. Probably that stupid hurricane that hit New York / New Jersey last year

It was def. hurricane sandy. I should be getting my renewal this month so I am curious to see what it is. I want to say I pay a little over $300 but not sure of the limits. Full coverage.

Just got this in a message from Progressive:

Propulsion Plus Coverage
How a low-cost coverage can save you from high-cost repairs

A new lower unit on an outboard motor or the upper and lower units of a sterndrive motor can easily cost thousands of dollars. That can be a big bill, but now you can let us pay it.

With Propulsion PlusŪ coverage, exclusively from Progressive, we'll pay to repair or replace these components in case of mechanical breakdown. We'll even pay when the breakdown results from normal wear and tear.

To add it to your policy—just call 1-800-888-7764.

Plus, it's affordable. The newer the boat, the lower the annual premium is for the life of the policy. In fact, coverage for a brand new boat can start for
as little as $38 a year!

So help protect your propulsion system with the only protection of its kind—add Propulsion Plus coverage today.*

Man I went from like 470 or so to like 520. Not a huge increase, just like 50 bucks but I've never gotten a ticket on the water or had a claim. In fact this year i have one more year experience as a boater than I did last year, therefore my insurance should decrease lol.
