View Full Version : Bestia the 2013 Moomba Mojo

The long awaited delivery has finally come.

I chose the 2013 Moomba Mojo.
I had many reasons for this but at the end of the day it was really a simple chose. I looked at almost every boat brand out there. For the size of boat, price and what you get for your money the Mojo was really the hands down winner in my book.

I have to give a big thanks to Rick Tinker, he came in a thread last summer and said he would pull some strings. Between him Shane Stillman, and AWS they made me a great deal that made the Mojo an even better deal for me.

I wont waste a bunch of time talking about the boat. That will come later as i start with my long list of mods

Here it is.

How many hours on that puppy?, we know the "white tower" doesnt come as an option. can wait to see the audio setup as mine is very similar. you will be very pleased with the 4 xm9's

She only has 5 hours 2 of those are when we did the demo with Sandm. They only put 1 hour after the Cali test. I told Shane then i was going to buy it and it better not have a bunch of hours LOL.

He only had 1 other dealer demo for it and then it went to his shop for storage. Been there ever since.

Me and Claudia believe a lot in the saying, If its meant to be it will be, and Karma. We both find it amazing that when Shane came to the Cali Demo with this boat, it was almost exactly how we would have ordered it, and it was Grey, a new 2013 color. It matches the truck almost perfectly. The only thing more we could have asked for was metalic grey which is not an option on the Moomba line. I dont know if Shane got a picture of our truck to color match this or if it was completly faith. Either way we are very pleased.

As for the Skylon tower, AWS is pushing real hard to get SC to make that the standard tower, they are super impressed with it.

I will have to get close up pictures of those Racks, the tower and upper rack actually have Moomba Engraved in them. They are nice.

Prop-- no i dont have the 1617 i had on the LSV as i sold it to a forum guy here. There is actually another prop even bigger and better that fits the Mojo that i will get if the prop i have now isnt good enough. Time will tell as when we had the boat loaded with surf ballast it wasnt having any issues like the LSV did.

I might try plasti dip on the speakers to make them white. I like the Exiles Black personally but i might have to spray them white and see how i like it. I mean hey if i dont like it i can peel it off LOL.

that tower needs to be the stock tower. after shane pointed out the difference, it makes sense..

never having been in a new moomba, mike did awesome. it's a very nice boat with a solid beginning to a surfwave. still a few things I don't like about it, but that boat is hands down the best color combo out there. the nose doesn't seem as "pronounced" with that color scheme.

mike, I hope shane threw in that custom surfrope we used that night :)

Mike, how tall is your garage door ???

mmandley
01-31-2013, 09:57 AM
Mike, how tall is your garage door ???

8ft and the mounted racks barely clear, only about 1/2inch from the robber seals. No way this will fit in a 7ft door.

Also all my storage totes that i have on that side have to be moved to the other side of the garage now. Even with the tower down i only have 1/4 inch of clearenace from the totes, and it hits the metal racks. So the boat is 2ft away from the wall and normally shes like 6inchs.

7ft door here and I have to have someone in the boat hold the tower down to clear the rubber seal. took one look at that boat and knew it was never destin for a 7ft door :)

the things we have to endure to upgrade :)

why can't builders figure out that 11ft doors on a 30ft deep garage should be standard..

EXACTLY!

I have garage envy of Newty - his door isn't that big, but his 3rd bay is plenty long for the LSV plus some room in front of and a workbench behind it!

kaneboats
01-31-2013, 02:26 PM
I have 3 bays and all 3 are too short. Have to put her in the double door (at least the new one is 8 ft high) and turn her sideways. I don't get to park in there but my '01 Suburban doesn't care. Wife can still squeeze in the first bay. Good enough. Room for dirtbikes next to the boat too.

Man, you just brought back a great memory for me. One Sunday night when I was in college, at our fraternity chapter meeting, a guy introduced a motion banning all electrical cleaning appliances from electrical outlets during all regular and postseason Bears games (they used to play in the postseason back then). It was hilarious. Our Little Sisters org gals used to come over on Sun. mornings and "clean" the house-- their work would extend into the noon kickoff times and angered a few guys. I'm laughing all over again just thinking about that one. Like a preview of being married.

Love it. "Can't get Claudia's car in MY garage." LOL!

Yes sir. When we had the house build it was more then clear that the Garage is my MAN SPACE and the rest of the house is hers. I get very little say to what is in the house. Even in the walk in closet i get 1/3 and she gets 2/3s plus all the floor space for shoes.

My responcibility is everyone outside, garage, yard, cars, boat, bike, lawn care.
I dont clean house, i dont do dishes, laundry, or even take the trash out to the garage. I take it from the garage outside to the trashcans. I will help with some things once in a while but she doesnt clean, maintain, or help with yard works.

We divided this up years ago and it works well.

We also dont share checking accounts, we have a joint savings that she puts money into for bills and the house payment. I pull it into my account and pay all the bills. She pays her car, and cell out of her own checking.

Yes she is. When we load her up with all the gear for the Lake Billy trips i actually have to turn off the driving lights because people flash me all the time.

i have a set of air bags with on board air compressor but i have just been too busy and a bit too lazy to install. i will have to get it done though.

This boat isn't that much heavier then the LSV but it does seem to have more nose weight.
My hitch setup weighing in at a cool 85lbs isn't helping either LOL

Well it also holds my brush guard that protects the boat from rocks and such, so it does come in handy. I might have to look into a standard drop hitch with a long tongue so i can bolt the brush guard. I do cringe each time i have to pick that hitch up to install it.

Its bad when you have to remind yourself <lift with your legs> to put the hitch on the truck LOL

As the saga and plethera of upgrades continue. I bring this small teaser to you.

Shes been at the Exile shop for 3 weeks now. Shes got more on the top, less in the bottom is that how we all like mistresses? LOL

Stereo work is 80% done. I have done all i can do for now. Everything is installed and shes off to King Pin Customs so the famous Jason Kranitz can make a custom fiberglass box for her. This will be a sealed box with a Exile XI Big 15 woofer. WOW this thing is huge.

Then its back to Exile for a final stereo tune.
Then to Seattle Washington to Evolution Covers for measurments.
Lastly back to Oregon City AWS for Heater Install, Ballast makeover.

Finally back home mid March.

Heres a something i did last night as i finished my rather long to do list.

My heater is on the observer side. I am sure AWS will work around all the stereo stuff. And, there is a lot of stereo stuff!!!!

Heater after the custom box is built? I'd be nervous that the heater needs to go where the box is built.

When speaking to AWS about the heater, it was there idea to do all the stereo stuff first. I had mentioned i really didn't like the vents in the walk threw, because only the driver and observer can use them. So what my plan is, i think I'm going to mount the heater right behind the drivers seat in the storage bay, so its opposite of the battery storage. This way the vents will reach everyone in the main cabin all the time.

As Boonejeepin mentioned there is a lot of stereo gear, but this boat is so big, it doesn't look crowded. Just dropped her off at King Pin today. They went over the design and type of enclosure.

They are going to build a fiberglass down fire box with a panel in front to enclose the area. Should look real sweet. Honestly due to all the cables in the floor, the box wont be as fare back as i wanted but it should still be fine. I am sacrificing a little more foot room, about 4 inches more then i wanted but with the new captains area and the seat being installed farther away from the dash then the LSV it should still feel larger then the LSV's foot area on Fierah did.

Also working on a custom battery enclosure to cover my now installed 6v golf cart batteries that will power the new stereo all day with no issues.

HAHA yea but I'm going to leave it chrome and white. I think im done with Plasti Dip for now. I learned a lot doing it, good things and bad things. Once the boat is all done ill post all the pictures and a write up on the plasti dip for the letters.

I think a lot of people will be doing it.

At AWS today i showed both the General Manager and Sales Manager the pictures and they were stoked, and had a lot of questions on how i did it, do and dont's.

Cory is a really nice easy going guy to deal with. I got to watch him measure the boat. I was really cool to see how he does it. I would have never thought to make patterns out of plastic like he does.

Then he showed me his shop and several new materials he is working with.

Then.. Moombadaze became the choice of topics LOL.

I didn't think to take pictures still he was measuring the back of the boat. Me and him were busy talking Exile and Wetsounds, seriously LOL.

Yes everyone with a Mojo will benefit from my trip to Evolution Covers.

I told Cory i will check at AWS on their Mojo for the tower foot length and height. My tower sits in the same location as the factory i just don't know of the mounting base is the same size. I will verify that but it wont matter too much because Cory uses a stretch boot at the tower feet.

But in short, anyone with a Mojo that wants an Evolution Cover, Cory now has the measurement to make them.

Moombadaze, No i didn't see your cover but i think i recall hearing it will be done this week. Its on his list. I didn't even ask about yours, he was like "Mike you know Moombadaze? I think that's his screen name? I said ohh yea me and him talk from time to time." Cory is excited to get your cover to you, as i think you are the first 13 LSV hes doing.

From talking to him he schedules only so many covers to be built per year. He basically makes 1 cover per day, everyday. So once his calender is full he stops taking orders. It sounds like its a first come first serve unless your special LOL.

I'm a returning customer so i might be more special then first timers, but i know my cover is about 2 weeks out on his list he said. This week he has some other covers to do, but hes working on mine also, he has to get some peaces made and off to the printers, or embroiders so they can get my custom work done. Then he will make it when everything returns.

Cory has been making covers for 20+ years, this explains why his covers are so dam nice. Hes not new to this game.

Well, you got my concern. He can sure make some covers and there will be folks wanting MOJO covers. I knew the tower was different (this year anyway) so I wanted to know if he was ready for that. Not surprising he is. I'm sure he loves Moombadaze as this is his second (at least) Evolution cover and he wouldn't buy anything else.

With the new Beast being so much taller then the LSV, i was having issues with my space in the garage. Last year i spent some time organizing and cleaning out the garage, you might remember the pictures.

Hey Mike,
Is that top board a hyperlite apex?
I have one just like it and last summer the thing just fell apart (started to de-laminate on both ends).
I tried contacting Hyperlite (HO Sports) several times to discuss the issue to see if this is common, covered, if not covered repairable, ect.... and I've got nothing but the run-around and bad email addresses and contact info.
Every time I call it rings and rings. When I do get someone they don't know and tell me I need to talk to Eric (whomever that dude is?)
Any rate, I am not at all happy with their cust service to say the least!

Sorry for the rant - just looks like the same board :)

Yes that is that exact board. Yes mine is delaminating on the ends also. I also noticed its fading bad from the being in the racks over the summer. Its only in the rack when we are at the lake but the UV is fading the colors.

I dont ride it as much anymore. i use the one below it sitting on top of the CWB Ride surfboard. Its a Hyperlight State 145 and actually an older board, but no delaminating or issues with it other then fading on top as well.

WOW looking threw this thread, i realized when i organized my Photobucket i screwed up all the pics here.

Ill Repost them here so people can see them. Wish we had an edit feature so i could change the links and fix it all.

Heres goes round #2

Here it is.

OK what started this whole update was i shared my Sub photos in another thread for a fellow Mojo owner. Might as well add them here.

I am still going to do an upgrade thread, shortly once i get the boat back from AWS. <it happens to be there now>

The carpet on the box looks unmatched in the photo's but its actually the same as in the interior carpet, its just the pull out carpet is darker and outside lighting.

I still want to get something for the front of the box to dress it up a bit. Its way to plain.
Also i have to move the facial panel up 1/2 inch to allow the pull out carpet to lay flat.

Its an Exile Big 15 set at 1ohm firing down, with about 1-2inch space, sealed box.

@jstinger

Nice that you caught that. i tried telling Brian it was messed up in the video. We are missing 2 sections and im not sure why. We filled up over 32G of cards with still motion.

I pointed out a couple times that the windshield was backwards. The first part of the video, is really the second part. Then there is a missing section with the Tinted window back on, and the section of the amp rack being built and installed is missing as well. Some of the missing parts might be my fault as i have never dealt with a Go Pro so im learning.

You set the camera to still shots every X seconds up to 1 minute. We did 1 minute shots. Then when you render it you speed it back up and it gives you that. The more often you take a picture the smoother the still motion will look. THis was done over a couple weeks on the days i had time to work on the boat.

Some of the missing parts might be my fault as i have never dealt with a Go Pro so im learning.

ha ha........thought it was probably just editing :)

Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like you can take sections out of your tower? How does that work? I understand you don't have the factory oz.

Yes mine has a 1 off Skylon, 1 off because even the tower has been changed slightly from factory. It has the lower cross bar removed to open the lower section of the tower up.

On my tower the center section is removable with 6 Allan bolts. This is how i wires the tower. It would seem this makes wires easier but trust be it doesn't. I had to do a lot of cutting grinding and customizing to the inside area that you cant see to make the wires work. The tower is designed to only have wires in the front most tube goto the boat. There is a small track in the removable section for wires to the rear inside tube. In order to mount my center 3set of speakers i had to drill access holes then route the center section to allow the wires.

Like i said in your PM go with the 500 option and get the larger diameter tower i think you will be more then happy.

Other then the diameter of my tower vs the standard, and the removable center section they are pretty similar. They use the same Bimini also.

HAHA i didnt even notice that, ill mention that to my crew, you know in Texas it seemed every boat we looked at sits about 4 inches off the bow stop. IDK i tried it but the boat bounced all over the place on the trailer. Felt really ruff on the back of the truck.

Sometimes when you load the rear end is floating when you winch up. This pushes the bow down and tight to the roller. Then when you pull the trailer out of the water the rear sits down on the bunks. At this point the nose lifts up a little and leaves a gap between the eye and the roller. Very hard to winch her up more when she's up out of the water though. Maybe on a downslope it could be done with the bunks still wet. Maybe have to just pull out of the water a few feet and winch a little more before you leave the ramp.

Mine normally is tight on the roller, in Texas me and Brian saw a lot of them, non of the Moomba Supra crew, or we would have said something but even when we inquired about it, they were like everyone does it like this, the bow will get all scratched if you leave it on the roller.

I didnt have it done intentionally. I tried it 1x and the boat was bouncing on the trailer and i could feel it in the truck, i said never again.

I will say trailing a Mojo is much more work then the LSV, it doesnt self center as well due to the wide nose, also its real easy to get the trailer too deep or too shallow, now a lot of difference between the too. Seem like the Mojo sits on more bunk surface as well because its harder to launch it off the trailer. We literally have to back the truck down a little and stomp the brakes to give it enough inertia to come off the trailer, unless i want to back the truck into the water, and i dont.

Not complaining, just differences noticed.

What was that spray you can get to spray the bunks down to make them slicker?

Don't mean to hijack but what winches are you guys using? It's near impossible to get the Mojo up against the bow stop with the 1500# stock winch even with it partially floating... I'm afraid I'm going to spin the handle off. I've been looking at a Fulton F2 2 speed 3200#, and the 2000# on my last boat and it was awesome.

This past weekend, I trashed my prop trying to force the boat to the bow stop... sure would be nice if you could close the ~2" gap with a winch.

+1 on this.

something isn't quite right with your loading technique and if you tore the old prop up doing this, you're sure to do the same with the new one which is larger.

Yes, we are fairly new to the inboard world. My last boat was a snap to load. We certainly didn't have the trailer far enough in the water this past weekend because I couldn't get up to the bow stop... I had my wife back in but she went back too far...I powered up and hit the side of the prop guard because things good crooked as she backed (it was both windy and choppy). I think we've learned our lesson and shouldn't have too much as far as problems go as long as the trailer is consistently backed so that the fender is barely above water. We do easily use 6+ ramps in a given season and each is a little different... that adds some complexity.

My question had to do with winches. I've seen non standard winches on several peoples trailers. It would be nice if once you pulled out and found you had a 1" gap to your bow stop that you could crank the winch and get it up there.

I recently switched my winch to the Fulton F2. Not the 2 speed, just the beefed up version of the stock style.

You will not be able to crank the bow to the bow stop unless its in the water. No way.

I have proped my boat on this year on the trailer and never did with my LSV.

The issues i have learned with the Mojo is with the wide nose, it doesn't center on the trailer as well as the deeper V nose boats. Also it has more weight on the nose section that's riding on the trailer so its much harder to crank up then a V nose such as the LSV.

Normally i can drive the boat on the trailer and then crank it with it just in gear enough to releave the pressure on my winch. Not the case with the Mojo, this is how it got proped.

The way we load the boat now is run the trailer down deep, 5 or 6inches over the fenders. Drive the boat up to the trailer and shut her off as the nose passes the guide poles. Then i can winch her up to the bow stop. My driver and a crew person will hold the guide-poles to center the boat. I pull it out of the water then one will jump on the swim deck and make sure the boat is sitting on the bunks correctly. If so i pull the boat up the ramp.

I find it much more frustrating to trailer the Mojo then my LSV but once i got used to the new style it was no issue.

As for just muscling on the boat using the winch, i have ripped several straps doing this, so many that i keep a spare in the truck.

Not sure though that a different winch solves your problem. You're still manually cranking some 4,000 lbs.

Lot of good advice in this thread for loading. I'd suggest that you get the fenders UNDER the water.

I appreciate your response, I know I'm not the only one that's hit their trailer. Our crew will just need to take a little time to figure out what works best for us. Your method certainly sounds difficult and I would rather somethign like that not be neccesary.

Beautiful boat by the way!

Yes you want the highest part of your fenders at least 2" UNDER water.

Having your fenders above the waterline could be what contributed to your prop strike, if you back deep enough down the trailer should be too low under the floating boat for the prop to come into contact

Waking up my old thread, figure its the best place to post up the upgrades.

Just picked her up from AWS yesterday afternoon.
Upgrades included,
2014 Stainless Steel Swim Deck brackets, I think these are now standard on Moomba, and have been standard on Supra for some time. Very strong, stops the rattle but does require two people to remove the swim deck because it tilts towards the boat now.

I will have to contact my friends at FAE now to get a new mounting system.

Also got the Flow installed, nothing different to see as plenty of pics have been posted.

Upgraded to the new Black Chrome MOOMBA letters, looks pretty nice, I would still rather have BLACK but that's a Supra only option still.

Had to get a couple warranty issues taken are of,
1 Electronic Dash display bolts and bracket fell off, I assume due to the base.
2 Port side front speaker pulled 2 of the 4 screws out, I assume do to the bass in the bow area
3 Observer seat, and walk through seat piping on the bottom of the seat was fraying.

Had to get a little cosmetic work done, I had gell cracking on the port side due to the boat hitting the side of our House Boat at Powell, really windy a couple days, bent the piss out of my anchor, and it actally pulled lose both anchors I had on the Mojo.

Lastly was a little touch up on the trailer from a prop strike last year. < don't ask > lol

Gell Cracks.

It wasn't that bad honestly. So when it happened we looked for damage, and looked several times after. We pulled her home and went out 2 more times in Oct and still nothing. Then once the temps dropped below 40 outside, I pulled the boat in to buff it and winterize it and BAM they where what you see in the pics.

Completely dormant until it got cold out. Insurance paid for it luckily but I was shocked and sick when I saw it. I am just so happy AWS got it matched perfectly. We had a small rock ship on the bottom of the hull and if you know the location you can see a slight color difference. It was patched last year at delivery.

Here is the main anchor that got bent, and finally pulled out. It pulled an identical one that was on the rear of the boat.
