View Full Version : Oz tower speaker wiring

Hello,

How are you guys running speaker wire in your Oz towers? Upon first glance it seemed really easy, using the stock 2 holes drilled from the factory, run down the front side of the tower into the mounting bracket - but I just pulled the grommet and realized the place that is drilled does not connect to the front tower pole. Are you drilling through the front all the way through to the other side and then plugging it?

Thanks,

Dev

Yes, drill through the first hole into the front tube. I used a fish tape and pushed the wires up from the bottom, and had someone watching through the hole to watch and pull them through. The trick is that the tower needs to be held up a little, just above windshield height.

Thank you Ian, i'll give it a go tomorrow!

just ran my wires last night, took the simple way myself. I positioned the speakers on the forward down bar, its not a perfect placement. but i only wanted to drill one hole

Ian,

I was going run a separate 14ga to each speaker, were you able to pull yours all the way from the bottom up around the bend to the driver side of the boat? Are there any tricks to doing this?

ian ashton

I pulled 12awg down each side, not up and over.

Oh you've got to be kidding me.

I just finished fishing the wire up both sides, soldered and heat shrunk the connections, and found out the Exile speaker clamp does not fit on the starboard side. WTF? Of course when I test fit, I only put the port side speaker on. I wasn't aware the tower was not identical on the sides.

Suggestions?

the Exile speaker clamp does not fit on the starboard side

Suggestions?

Can you give some more details on what exactly is not fitting. pictures if possible too

If you are having fit problems with Exile Clamps, or any problem with Exile Clamps get me pictures and what your problem is, i can help you get it resolved ASAP.

Im not aware of any issues with the new towers and Exile clamps. I know the new towers are a slightly smaller diameter then the prievious years towers but they are still biger then the Outback tower diameter and Exile has speacial clamps for those towers also.

Dev,
Round tower tubes will distort and become more oval in shape as you encounter a bend radius. Is it this or are you wedged in a corner or something else?

David

Dev

There's no problem with the Exile clamps or the shape of the tower. It's more that I am being wedged into a corner by the factory holes and am trying to avoid drilling more. I'll take a few pics in about an hour.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Ian,

My tower has a small gap just outside of where yours are mounted. This is where the holes were originally drilled and the reason I am having trouble. They are not symmetrical.

I know the answer is going to be drill a hole and move it to the inside, i'm just delaying the inevitable. :(

On a lighter note, you can get caps at the Home Depot to put in the tower holes, paint them black and they will be pretty invisable to the common eye.

Dev,
Exactly from centerline of the existing hole to centerline of the new hole, what will the offset need to be?
Is there as chance that the collar width will cover the existing hole?

noticed that on mine too--not being symmetrical

try not to make swiss cheese out of the tower

Dev

Not possible, i'm going to have to jump to the other side of a pole. This is how it's set up right now (factory drilled holes)

The side that fits:

167581675916760

anddd the side that doesn't:

16761

As you can see there's a pretty large gap because the clamp won't fit in the space.

I'll probably just move it to the inside where Ian's are, and put the grommets back in these holes. Unless anyone has a different solution for me.

LOL moombadaze, no swiss cheese here, I haven't actually drilled any holes yet.

moombadaze
01-29-2013, 12:46 PM
i tried for the same spot myself--not even close to fitting-just like your one side.

Dev
01-29-2013, 12:59 PM
Did you just jump the bar to and move it inside? I really wish it would have fit there!

ian ashton
01-29-2013, 08:09 PM
Oh yea, we didn't use the factory holes to mount the clamps, I just used them as a portal to fish the wires. I mounted the clamps slightly inside and drilled a new hole.

Ian, Daze, Dev, when you get the chance can you post up pics of the speakers from the back of the boat, (with the tower up) so we can see both speakers in one shot? I think it would be very helpful for all the new Oz tower owners out there to see the variations of where you guys ended up mounting them. Thanks!

Honestly i think its because even though its a Moomba, from afare everyone thinks its a Malibu, and SC doesnt want to advertise the other boat LOL.

The new OZ tower you can see the cut outs from a distance still so it shows its not a Malibu.
This is just my thinking, i have not herd anything offical.

Yes from meta craft but why spend the cash and discontinue the option after 2 years. I'm puzzled. No real r&d etc. machining.. Setups

Does skiers still buy towers from XTP? I have no clue who makes the OZ but I think Roswell makes the S-bend. I was thinking XTP bought the illusion/v2 tower, not skiers.

Yes to all and XTP makes the Oz. Z5 is also part of XTP now.

The V2 tower didn't last b/c it didn't sell well. Same story as the XLV. JV, you just happened to like both.

IMO, it was hard for most folks looking at a value/pricepoint boat to check the box for that expensive of an option that provided no functional benefit, just a different look.

was'nt the V2 option about $4500.00, that alone would keep me from checking that box even as much as I like it. If it was $1500. I thinkmore would have sold as its such a clean looking tower

did you have polarized sun glasses on when looking at it? I believe the curve in the tempered glass creates that effect. take your glasses off and it magically disappears.

I love the V2 as well. Still, would not have picked it as an option-- just too much. Sure wish there were 2013 LSV's out there with the V2. If I could get the new LSV hull with that tower I'd think it over. I always liked the way the lines look with the old standard tower so no reason for me to switch up.

I wasn't talking about the red glare!!! LOL. It actually is a lot more noticeable with sunglasses on (polarized or not) or when it's wet it seems to show a lot. The best way to describe it would be 'spotty' I guess..

Can glass be tempered poorly and show that more as a result?

It's got nothing to do with being "poorly tempered" as it's simply the result of the stress put on the tempered glass when it's shaped into the compound curved shape of the windshield. And, it definately is more noticable when you have on polarized sunglasses and/or the windshield is wet. Look at the flat piece of glass in the walkthru and you will notice it doesn't have the same effect.

I think the rad-a-cage tower looks better than the oz but the V2 definitely wins overall. The skylon tower on mikes boat is probably somewhere between the rad-a-cage and v2. I think the old supra progressive tower should come on Moombas now. Or go back on supras to replace the ugly "S" bend tower
