I got word a few weeks back that my Outback V is slated to go into production on January 15th, with a completion date around the 22nd. I've been in contact with the factory and hope to get some pics of the build after its out of the mold, hopefully around the 18th.

I'm really excited to take delivery and start some new projects!

This is the colorizer of what I ordered, for those that missed it;

My dad and I bought the '08 as partners; he is just going to keep it for himself, which saved me the headache of selling.

that is a sharp boat. When the OBV first came out I really liked it but hated the old outdated tower. Putting the current tower on it just fits and makes the boat a really nice package. I also really like the outside colors you picked. Gonna be an awesome boat. Congrats

I got some pics today! Not sure if I'm allowed to post them, so I'm going to hold off until I get the OK :)

But let me tell ya; it is puuuuuudddyyy!

Top and bottom halves of the hull are still separate, engine is mounted, and they were working on the wiring today I guess.

Getting excited!

Can't wait to see the pics , color combo looks great, guess your buddies new Lsv swayed your color choice, you have always been the blue man..... Now the green man.....

ian ashton
01-18-2013, 11:06 PM
I've always loved the green, but my wife actually picked the colors; "if we get a new boat I want it to look completely different than the one we have now" -mixing it up I guess :)

ian ashton
01-21-2013, 04:36 PM
I got the green light to share these, but please do not post them anywhere else; the word is that I'm lucky to have gotten build pics, and they don't want to have a 'run' on picture requests, as they have very limited time to accomodate and don't want to upset anyone that they can't provide pictures to.

At any rate, here is where she was, as of Friday;

I went on a bit of a spending bender and started ordering some goodies. Today the Samson Sports tower mirror bracket & CIPA Extreme mirror arrived, along with a bunch of 10' green 3/8" looped ropes, green digital volt meters, and various funny/offensive stickers for my mirror or side glass.

I also ordered 3 pairs of Exile SX65m's for the cabin and a ZLD.

I'm going to pull the Xi800.4, Harpoon, XM9s, and Kicker ZX1000.1 and 2 10" L7's from our DD Outback as well, along with the dual battery/ACR setup.

I can't wait for the boat to get here so I can start some projects!

The ZLD has blue LEDs, which would have been fine on my last boat, but it kept bugging me that on the '13 the blue would be out of place, so I pulled the ZLD apart and put the same 5050 RGBs inside. The OEM blue LEDs are pretty dim, so I just left them connected through the board. The RGBs have their own wires out the back and will run to the controller with the rest of the LEDs on the boat.

Can't wait to see it unwrapped. Man, looking at the ground in that picture and not sure I would want to pull a new boat in that snow. We completely shut down when we have snow here and we #*@& sure don't pull our boats in it.

My guess is that he took it home unless travel was an issue.

ian ashton
02-11-2013, 08:47 PM
I pulled it home, 250+ miles with the last 100 or so being all ice. I made it to our subdivision, and...

...then it happened...

....driving up a hill to get into our neighborhood....

...I hit a total ice slick, stopped moving forward, started sliding backward down the hill, no brakes, no gas, no steering...

....then it happened....

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/12/e5u5a5ag.jpg

Not too bad, trailer and wake plate took the bulk of the damage as the boat pushed about 5" forward on the trailer and broke the weld on the bow stop. All things considered we got SUPER lucky to hit where we did and not jackknife.

Here is a picture of the hill, and the tree I slid backward into;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/12/atemyja2.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/12/eny4u4as.jpg

So, once I got it home I parked it at the base of our driveway (another very steep hill) and took it to a pole barn I've rented for the remainder of winter.

All uncovered, I'm so pumped with how good it looks!

So amazed with the SC teams dedication to CUSTOMER.

Not only did Mr. Tinker make the offer for helping out here, he also reached out to Club Royale and asked them to contact me and take care of whatever I needed! Talk about amazing!

What makes this more meaningful, and what I didn't share with anyone until now is that the insurance was not officially bound at the time of the accident, so all repairs were coming out of my pocket.

This just reinforces how great of a decision I've made (twice) to buy a Skiers Choice product!

Man that boat is sharp! The SC guys are really standup guys.

I'm also pretty sure that since the boat was in tow the truck insurance would have to cover it.

kaneboats
02-14-2013, 12:12 PM
Better read the whole policy. It is possible that if the boat was financed and released without insurance in place the dealer's policy would have to cover it.

mmandley
02-14-2013, 12:46 PM
This is how it worked when we bought our first LSV.

With the Mojo they had the insurance in place as soon as the loan was final and i hooked the boat up.

I thought just like with a car, if you put a loan on it the bank has to have the insurance information before the dealer can release the property to you? Maybe not? IDK but every time i buy a vechicle thats the way it works.

maxpower220
02-14-2013, 01:13 PM
Insurance is different in each state. Also, the policy that is "forced" due to a loan would not have comprehensive and would not cover the incident, in this case. At least that would be how it works in FL, the insurance that the loan has to have only covers the bank's interest. The bank may require the owner to have full coverage.

kaneboats
02-14-2013, 01:15 PM
Well, did the damage occur to Ian's part of the boat or the bank's part?

ian ashton
02-14-2013, 02:20 PM
The insurance company didn't decline a claim, it was a moral issue - I don't feel right about asking them to pay knowing that I didn't even pay for the policy when the accident happened. Now with SC helping out the repair expense is much less.

First, I love the colors and look of that boat. You nailed it.

Second, sorry to hear about the accident. Everyone is ok, and like you said, nothing that can't be fixed.

Third, awesome job by Moomba / SC. I guarantee that whatever expense they just incurred to help you out was nothing compared to the brand loyalty that kind of act creates. Best advertising you could possibly have, and probably at a fraction of the advertising / marketing cost.

This is indeed awesome, and another reason why we continue to tell anyone who will listen why they need to buy a Moomba or Supra; great boats and unheard of customer service!

Thanks Mr. Tinker and all of the SC team!

Ian, with the handles faceing down you will find they do hit the tower due to the forward slant of the tower. you'll have to swap the forks too. when you get them mounted on the tower it makes a lot more sense.

advise- have the single main alan head screw on the clamp facing inside the boat. this will make it super easy to remove/install from inside the boat.

second advise-you'rs will most likely need to have the corners filed down for clearance when they pivot--its that piece in the above photo that has 2 allen screws visible in the photo-goes from the swivel to the bar that holds the racks.

Regarding painting the grills; it seemed that the PlastiDip just goes right in the horn hole; I didn't have to do anything.

Regarding color; it is my understanding that Intense Green is new for 2013, but I haven't seen them side by side. I used ModelMaster Sublime Green (Mopar) which isn't exact, but is pretty close.

The key to making it look good is in the clear coat; I use Rustoleam Painters Touch 2x Coverage clear coat - it is the best clear I've ever seen!

There is a very slight amount of stress cracking in the back on the top cap, to see it you have to shine a flashlight and look at the reflections. The green was unscathed, which is amazing. I'll have it fixed, likely in the fall.

Tinkering in the boat the other day I came to the conclusion that the area above the cupholders in the gunwales is much too plain – granted this will house RGB-LED clad Exile speakers, as well as RGB-LED rings around the cup holders, but that big flat spot was bugging me.

Before;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/16/eda2aja7.jpg

I decided that I would try to make something similar to what Supra and Malibu have, but since I don’t have a CNC milling out of aluminum is out – searching eBay I found some chrome tail light bezels that were the right size, so I cut some acrylic and sanded 1 side, then glued it into the bezel, and placed a black Moomba sticker on it;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/16/a7ure8uj.jpg

Next I added some RGB-LED strips;

Ian,

Thanks,

RGB is more fun, and not much more work or money.

I am using 5050 SMD RGB strips from eBay.

These are basic RGB, which have 4 contacts. There are also "horse race" or "chaser" 5050 RGB strips, which have 10 contacts and while offer more programming options the contacts are microscopic and hard to solder.

Started measuring and planning my stereo layout.

Since I ordered the boat without ballast (never used it on the DD, can't see why I'd want it on the V) I've got a huge "ski locker" to play with - I think I'm going to split the door and use the back part as an in-floor cooler, and the front as a ski locker. Also toying with the idea of putting the batteries in there;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/17/y4yserez.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/17/4usy6yby.jpg

This is a Group 27, and fits perfectly on both sides. The wheels are turning...

For anyone curious, this is how the mirror arm fits hen folded to the other side - perfectly out of the way;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/17/jyqaryzu.jpg

ian ashton
03-17-2013, 12:22 PM
I also decided it would make more sense to build a mock-up box out of foam board before I cut it out of wood; when I did the DD I had the boat a few feet away so it was easy to tweak as I went. With Chase's LSV I measured then built and brought to the boat (30 minutes away) and that proved to be a PITA. Since the V is about 20 minutes away I figured this would save some headache.

The box is about 2.5 cubit feet (internal), and the port will be in the outside so as not to take up and displacement.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/18/8amu6yba.jpg

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/18/a3ybeber.jpg

This boat doesn't have a traditional hump, rather just a 3" tall I-beam - I was going to build on top and forward of to save space, but the under dash area is much larger than the DD, so I can have a box that's 10" deep and not sacrifice much leg room; in fact I'll have significantly more legroom in this boat that I did in the DD.

If I ever decide to switch to larger woofers I can get about 4.5 cubic feet if I use the space above the I-beam in addition to this.

Ian,

Did you add backing plates to your pop up cleats? I am currently adding rear ballast to my boat, and today I noticed 1/2" white plastic plates added to the inside of the hull where the factory installed cleats were. Not sure how important they are, but wanted you to know.

Drove it home 250 miles in snow and ice
Got to your neighborhood, slid backwards on ice, smacked up the wakeplate - Stupid Tree!!
Oh yeah, the wife is in the truck also and eight months pregnant
Not only do you fix the wakeplate, you decide to start upgrading your boat (zipppp) including the stereo (why they don't just all come with killer sound systems yet I don't understand)
Decide to go ahead and make some custom backlit accent pieces

Ian , when I did my obv with the 4 port heater, I loved having a vent at the drivers feat. Two in the walkway and one behind the drivers seat.

wish my xlv had 4 , they put the heater on the port side, making it difficult to get fix heat to the starboard side.

The clarity of your water blows my mind. You can see the bottom in the picture of your slip! We had a chair get blown off our boat house deck and it fell in one of the slips in 3 feet of water and the only reason we knew where it was was because about 2 inches of one of the legs was sticking above the water line. You could not see ANY of it below the water line.

David -
If you ever make it up this way we'll have to take you out on one of the lakes up near Mt St Helens. I used to have ropes with sinking handles when we were skiing (so you don't run them over I guess) and you could literally see them 20-30ft down. Cold water - but clean and clear.

Torch Lake is pretty clear - Laura's family cottage is on the north end of the lake (about 45 minutes from our house, vs 20 minutes to the marina, which is why I bought the slip instead of leaving it at the cottage). About 30 years ago her grandpa intentionally sunk a row boat right before the "drop off" where the water is about 15' (goes from 15' to about 100' instantly) and its still completely visible.

It's about 8' in this pic;

I had a few spare minutes today so I broke out the hole saw and popped a hole in the fiberglass under the seat behind the driver to add a rear heat vent.

The hole;

HeaterCraft Hot Tube installed (this is what the factory installs for the front outlets so they all match);

I need to pick up some supplies to plumb it, but the messy part is done!

ian ashton
05-18-2013, 09:47 PM
Got a lot done today!

I hooked up the rear heater vent - what I did was run a tube from one outlet to the rear vent, then I T'd off the other outlet to the 2 front vents - seems to work great and the stuff to do it was like $15 at the hardware store. Here is how I did the T;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/19/upa9adej.jpg
It looks like there is a lot of extra tube because there is - I tried to match the length of the bottom to the top with the hope that the flow will be similar. I used a T instead of a Y for the same reason (couldn't find a non-directional Y)

I also made as ran my "left to right" harness;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/19/ydupynyt.jpg
This contains 4 sets of RCAs and power, remote, ground for the ZLD, both wires for the Sony Remote Commander, right tower speaker wire, subwoofer wire, Harpoon remote turn on (wired to the Accessory switch in the dash). I ran this through the bow. I ran a separate run for the ACR LED and voltage gauges (I have 2 small LCD volt meters, 1 for each battery) through the locker, since it was much shorter to the batteries in the floor.

I also got the start battery moved into the locker, but I didn't take any pictures. Tomorrow I'll finish mounting the house battery and wire the ACR.

This was a rainy day project I put together out of scrap Starboard - now my cleaners are in 1 easy to reach spot!
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/19/qa7esa8a.jpg

Also on the docket was the installation of the Sony Remote Commander - super easy, just a quick hole with a 3.25" hole saw. I'll snap pics of that tomorrow.

I actually have, before I made the decision to buy I test-skied at the dealer, and that is what made my decision so easy!

I normally ski at 28.5mph and 15' off behind the DD (I know, slow, I'm like 140 pounds and after the injury that's my comfort zone) which puts me about 5 feet behind the rooster tail, with a wake that's like a speed bump - in the OBV I test skied we ran a little faster, like 30mph and at 15' off the wake (in my opinion) was better than my DD at 28.5, about the same height but much wider so bombing through it for me was way easier.

I haven't skied behind this boat yet, but I suspect it will be the same.

jstenger
05-19-2013, 10:04 AM
My son and I ski at about 32mph. Wake isn't to bad. Never skied behind an Outback. I just figured it was a lot better since it was a ski boat. I have skied all my life behind outboards. Just recreational stuff. I think my rope is 65'.

Yes a picture of the base of the tower (with the tower folded forward of course) showing where/how the wires pass from the hull up into the tower.

ian ashton
05-27-2013, 07:56 AM
Ah, that will be an easy one - there is a hole in the base and in the fiberglass - you just have to feed from the front tube into the hole, which is towards the middle/back.

I'll snap pics when I run it, I don't think I have any of when we did the LSV.

I got the amps mounted and mostly wired today;
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/28/bedune5e.jpg
As you can see I went with white Starboard for the amps - all the black was running together, so I figured this would be a good contrast.

Also found the Kicker ZX1000.1 that powers my L7s to be dead, giving me a great excuse to order an Exile Xi1500.1 - more power and matches the rest of my amps!

I mounted the Kicker amp tucked away on the back of the bow seat since it didn't match, but I'm thinking I'm going to move it to the same area as the other amps - I just wish I would have known I'd be switching amps before I cut the Starboard!
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/28/y9y2y9um.jpg
Don't mind the sloppy wiring - I had to un-do some of the finished wiring to trouble-shoot the blown amp - wanted to make sure it wasn't an RCA, head unit output, or wire issue. The wires on the left floor are for the RGBs, need to tie that up to the rest of the harness but waiting to hook up the controller first to make sure they all work.

Ian, kinda confused here, what amps are powering what?

looks like you have a harpoon-is that not powering your towers ?

ian ashton
05-28-2013, 11:36 AM
Harpoon powers XM9s (not installed yet, hence no speaker wires ran to it)

Xi800.4 powers 6 SX65Ms

Kicker ZX1000.1 was going to power 2 10" Kicker L7s, but that's being replaced with an Exile Xi1500.1

Not bad since I never really use them, lol. I will typically angle them up when we are using for wakeboarding since the boat isn't totally on plane, it just looks goofy to have them like that all the time. They kind shoot over head, for the most part. Also, I'm generally not sitting back there, so it's ok, lol.

I'm unsure what it would be in "normal" colors - the green is a color they use for surf boards, not normally for boats.

Given that it was a custom cut (I made the template) the quote was $150.

I'm unsure what the cost would be now, I believe skippy-doo ordered one too.
