View Full Version : Basement Mancave

So since the fiancee moved in I am slowly loosing my bachelor pad:( I knew that something needed to be done to regain my masculinity and the garage wasn't big enough and warm enough in the winter. It was time to clean the basement out and build a mancave complete with a bar, shuffleboard table, fooseball, and projector. I'll update with pictures shortly.

Ok remember I am on a $1500 dollar budget minus the electronics. It was a block wall basement and I did not want to do sheet rock due to moisture.

^haha yeah the lava lamp from my former living room upstairs is definitely moving downstairs with me.

It's a spy one from Brostock all the Moomba coozies stay in the boat so they are not lost over the winter.

The bar temporarily in place.

The theater end of the room once I got all the can lights in. The last set of cans where the screen is going to be are on a dimmer switch.

After several hours of cleaning the old concrete I laid down some waterbased stain.
http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo121/2005r6rider/2013-01-08214005.jpg

I accented the cracks in the floor with a black stain that turned out really cool but is very difficult to see in the pictures.

http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo121/2005r6rider/2013-01-08215415.jpg

I am going to seal the floor tonight then hopefully start getting the bar back together.

Oh and my old Coke machine that fits beer bottles great, still takes dimes and works like its brand new.

it would appear that a basement is a prerequisite for building a house in wisconsin. not sure if it's for doing cool projects like this or escaping the cold winter. either way, looks great.. where's the kegerator going?

^We have a three bedroom house for just the two of us. So when kids come into the picture I'm hoping to be living on the lake with an open basement but if not we'll be ok.

Drew get it done! It is a great use of extra space and it is by far the cheapest square footage that you will ever add to you house.

Jason I would love an outdoor room but in WI you would really only have a couple months to enjoy it.

That's a great show! I have a lot if ideas from watching that. I have my DVR set to record them.

New Guy, with all the concrete down there what are you going to use for sound deadening? It may get echoey once you start using the theater and bumpin' the tunes.

Unfortunately, I recently experienced the other end of "cheapest" when in comes to the basement. In our last home, our finished basement was FANTASTIC with a theatre room, full bath, bedroom, office, bar, play area and workshop. Sheetroock ceilings, trey ceilings, crown molding, tile & carpet all on it's own heatpump system. Frankly, it was finished nicer then the first 2 floors and we spent the majority of our time there.

BUT, when we sold the home, we learned (and confirmed with an appraiser we hired ourselves) that below grade square footage is calculated at a severly discounted rate. So, why floors 1 & 2 were calculated at $100/sqft, the basement was calculated at $15/sqft. No positive adjustments for any of the items I mentioned. Just a simple sqft measurement X $15. In the end, while I did a lot of the work in the basement myself, I lost $$ but was OK with it b/c we did enjoy that part of our house tremendously.

New Guy

I am already looking at building acoustic panels where the the projector is going to kill the sounds. Right now it is a big echo chamber for sure. I didn't want to do carpet or sheetrock because I am in a low area of the subdivision and I don't want to worry about water even though it has stayed dry down there for the last couple years. So I will be figuring something out for sound.

Drew I would like to go that nice but frankly I understand the value of it. It may not increase you value a ton but it definitely will help sell you place over the neighbors unfinished basement a double edged sword. So I am trying to keep my budget in check.

Good plan. I love the floor and the grunge look. Need some Harley stuff and some old movie posters. -- Hey! I may have some decoration stuff for you. We had our family room at our old house done with old movie theme. Let me know if you want some black and white pics from old movies for the theater end of the room. They're just sitting in a box somewhere. I'll give you a list of what's there and send you the prints if you want any of them. Just PM me if you have any interest.

Of course you can't have old ass stereo equipment without the recordings to go with it. I actually listen to them all the time. It's weird how much digital music has wrecked the album. I mean who listens to a complete album anymore start to finish back in the day it was just too big of a pain in the ass to skip songs.

My Grandfather plays shuffleboard...he's 88...just sayin

probably a different kind of shuffleboard, but if he likes doing it while drinking a few cold ones with friends, then I'm down with that.

Ok so I am done with the basement. We had our open house this past weekend and it was a blast!

trust me, the payoff for a basement is a non-existent boating season so far :(

I agree! Scott were you able to catch a pull with anyone on Sunday?

I am finally going to get the boat out and we will be on water this weekend.

rode in the boat with shawn and saw some great airchair moves!! they are all great....
he has an amazingly clean outback for the year. it fired up first time for the year and ran great.. another solid skiers boat.

didn't get a pull as lifejackets/wetsuits are still packed up. you go out, lmk early enough and I'll show you how to properly fall on the water on a wakeboard. can't wait to get moved and get the boat out. 2 weeks.

Of course you can't have old ass stereo equipment without the recordings to go with it. I actually listen to them all the time. It's weird how much digital music has wrecked the album. I mean who listens to a complete album anymore start to finish back in the day it was just too big of a pain in the ass to skip songs.

I agree, but digital with the right DAC and source player can IMO sound just as good if no better (pops/clicks removed etc)

I listen to a wide variety of stuff and go from vintage to new all the time. No doubt love the vintage stuff but digital has its merits too

Mark, That looks great. Remember you need to make her feel that the best stuff is upstairs or she will take over your man cave.

Looks great! I wish I had a basement to turn into a mancave. I have nothing. The wife even stole the garage so she could park in there.
