radio question

I am looking at purchasing a 06 Outback V but I was wondering what type of radio comes with the boat if you don't get any of the upgraded stereo equipment? I was just doing the configurator on the boat and I have a hard time paying some of those prices that they are charging. I have friend who does stereo systems who will help me build boxes and install eveything for a bottle of Jack Daniels.

I got the step up but used my IPOD with radio transmitter all summer. I bought the radio with the boat at the boat show (just b4) so that it would be covered by the boat show 3 year warrantee.

Watch out for time eaters like running the wire thought the tower for tower speakers, Wire connectors from the tower to the boat, mounting the amp(s), etc.

Also note if you get the tower speakers at the boat show deal with the stock or even one up radio you end up buying an amp (or a bigger one I don’t remember exactly).

BTW allowing a guy that works for Jack Daniels to wire your ’06 boat paints an interesting mental picture. If your electrical system fries, shorts, or catches fire, who are you going to call?

I had the EXACT same thought when I was pondering my options & add-ons... I switched pretty quickly though...

I'm to understand that if you order it without selecting a radio then it comes with nothing. No wireing, no speakers, nada.

A Kenwood Sat ready CD/Stereo w/ remote and 6 Kenwood speakers installed for $500 is not a terrible deal.

Just putting the parts together is about that much.

In a previous life I installed tons of systems in cars as well - (I never worked for booze though - I was well paid) To do a system like this in a boat for $100 is insane.

Go try and get a car manufacturer to use quality name brand after market audio gear! They charge $1000 for the low power, paper cone, no feature JUNK they put in.

If they are like last year - a radio MAY be part of the boat show incentives so it may not even be an issue depending on when you order your 'V".

Thanks for the responses guys.....first let me clear up that my buddy would do the work for me for a bottle of Jack to be drank after completion of the job! He is not some hack he works for Sound of Advice doing high dollar jobs ranging in the 20-40,000 dollar price range. You guys did answer my main question of whether or not a radio would even be installed or not if a option was not chosen. I do agree that the price of the radio and speakers is a good price but the tower speakers seem to be a outragous price, $1000.00 for four speakers is a little crazy. Anyone have other ideas for tower speakers besides the OEM ones? I will definately be getting the Kenwood stereo and speakers installed from the factory but might have the amp, sub, and tower speakers be after market???? Thanks for all the advice!

It's not the drivers that are expensive. It is the aluminum shells and mounts.

again - do the math:

2 pairs @ ~$400 /ea + Speaker bar + wiring harness + labor... kinda hard to beat $995 by that much, and still ahve the factory quality (and 3 year warranty if you get the bumper to bumper)

I had these same sticker shock feelings this month... The Pop Up cleats I was TOTALLY against...

"I can go out and get these and Install them myself for MUCH less!"
...much paging through lots of online marine catalogs later... I find they are about $60 each no matter where I look. so to have them installed at the factory for $55... um.. "duh" (and those are etched "moomba" which is nice.)

I do think you can do better on the amp and subs though!

Yeah, you make good points Joe....Thank You!! I will probably take your advice and have the radio and tower speakers installed and do the amp and sub myself! I had a feeling it was the bar and shell that the speakers go in that was going to be most costly. Again thanks for talking me through the sticker shock.
