My little sub enclosure

With the help of some of the folks on this forum, I have started the redo of our '02 LSV and am now going through the stereo.

I have ordered my amps, 12'-W6, Kenwood HU and spent a few hours this last weekend starting on the sub enclosure which is replacing an old chinese made enclosure with an Alpine R12 shoved under the driver's area.

I was going to do a high fill, polish and fill again gloss finish, but for now I have ordered some Moomba yellow and Moomba grey vinyl and will decide which one I will cover it with. This is so I can speed up finishing the stereo install as I want to finish the stereo install then have the interior redone down in Fresno CA.

So for now I think I will spray the plywood with either a laquer or a roll a two-part epoxy such as the West System 105/206 products. I can always build another enclosure later if I feel like it as I will be putting together my little home cabinet shop this winter.

I still need to clean up the glue, mount the front (which is just tacked for now) and side panel, router/ease the outside corners and add the speaker wire terminal cup.

Looks good.
Be sure to elevate the enclosure off the sole by a minimum of 1/2" with polymer pads/risers of some type, such as PVC, HDPE, KingStarboard, ABS, etc. Regardless of what and how you coat/seal the enclsosure, you must provide for drainage and evaporation, especially with that much footprint against carpet. In avoiding a mold and mildew trap, it's also a good idea to space the enclosure off the hump by a small margin.

I have been going over that same issue in my head, I have been thinking of ripping some HPDE strips and screwing them to the back and bottom of the enclosure, over the vinyl. Easy and robust.

No magnet support, there are only two screws holding the sub for the mock up shots and I rotated them so I wouldn't hit the same holes for the final mounting.

Last coat of enamel to protect the enclosure.

Tomorrow I will cover the whole thing in "Moomba Yellow" Vinyl (I hope to get to it)

New amps and head unit go in on Wednesday, hopefully all goes well as we are having what will most likely be the last hurah (sp?) for the year at a Nor Cal lake called Bullard's Bar.

It should show my sub about 5 or 6 inches off the floor. If you want I can get a better pic of it. I basically bolted the box to the back of the foot rest and put in some removable supports at the front corners of the box, covered with a curtain of removable material

I had the exact same sub in my supra and it rocks. getting ready to install the same sub in the new boat next month. it's probably the best sub I have heard/used...

one question: the cad drawing at the top lists .91cuft. is that the footprint or the interior volume? jl looks for 1.25 internal for sealed.

Using a Qtc = 0.8, I got a net box volume of 1.31 cu. ft. and F3 = 40 hz, Gross volume = 1.4 cu. ft.

That was the cross section AREA calc. The gross volume was closer to 1.4 cu. ft.

Again, I gotta thank some of the other guys (David from Earmark, MLA, RCA and others) on this forum for helping me out on the design of the sub, sound system and wiring.

I built the entire unit in 2D cad with shop drawing type sheets (not shown) for the individual pieces, which helped me quite a bit during the fab. Then I had my 16 year old kid draw it up in inventor for practice. So if anyone wants pdfs, CAD or Inventor files, just ask.

I got a set of these Binding Posts (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=091-1245), drilled two holes a couple of inches apart and will install them after I cover the enclosure.

Well it took me a while, but after changing the design a few times it is finaly done.

When the sub enclosure is installed you wont really see the sides, but why not.

It will definately look better installed and running down the lake!!!! I cant wait.

Thanks, the vinyl was not hard for me to deal with as I had my buddy who does car interiors install it. It is hard to see in the pics, but the edges use french seams in burgandy.

My buddy will tell you what a PIA it was, but he always complains and always does a good job.
