soo its been a long time dream for me(and my father whos in his 70's) to own a 40-50's chris craft wooden runabout..i would love to own one once my boay sells but im nervous as well to owning such a beautiful boat and how how much work it would been to keep it a beautiful boat...what do you guys think about them

Perfect retirement boat for someone that is absolutely committed to owning one. Otherwise I think they're too much work to own one while you have other priorities cluttering your life. I wouldn't even consider it right now, after I think about how much work it already is to own a fiberglass boat. Just my two cents, interested to hear other opinions.

Lol. There are companies that make new wooden boats I would imagine have the same ride and feel but with new technology and less upkeep

I am in the same boat. I would love to own one. Someone in my area owns one and I see it on the lake from time to time and it is beautiful. Everyone in the boat thinks I am looking at a HBB but it is a showroom Chris Craft. I mean the boat looks new inside and out. I wish mine looked that nice. Anyways It would be a full time job to keep it looking like new and something for when you retire and can no longer wakeboard/surf. Just my 2c.

idk..it is on my list to own..and i found a nice chris craft for 17..thing looks brand new..and if i got the money for my boat it would pay off the one loan thats holding me back..i have 2 loans..small but together its costing me about 400$ a month..so im going to sell the bike that has the loan on her..and yall are right( i also did have ADHD as a kid )..but i also want input on these things before i drop money into them

and ill tell yall i tell my friends..if it doesnt sell by oct ill store it and redo the bent stuff on the rearend and redo the carpet and vinyl myself and make her look brand new..im not worried about it..and since my friend does lighted signs for work im going to get him to help me wire up the boat with led blue lights

IMO this is what you should do^^^^. Your budget seems to be tight and a woody gonna cost ya some coin. Save up this winter and dress your current baby up for the 2013 season. Make her the hottest chick in da club!

Save your coin,the old woodies are great hobbies but not too practical. Kinda like a 57 Chevy rebuild, not many ever hit the end of the driveway from the garage..

The other thing is that they are not much fun. They are more like art: great to look at but don't touch. Yes, you can take a ride but watersports are out of the question-- too messy. So, you can go for a cruise on a perfect day and then spend 4-5 hrs. cleaning her up. Save it for retirement.

Or you could go "hybrid" - modern composite hull & mechanicals, with a wooden deck, accents, etc. I saw a factory job (can't remember mfg) on Canyon Lake years ago & there was a guy over on the Supra forums that Woodied out his Comp. Would give you a reliable platform & still have the opportunity to learn about constant wood maintenance.

My neighbor has a 50's wooden Chris Craft. You have to keep them wet so the wood doesn't dry out and shrink. They kept it in an floating boat house and didn't check on it over the winter and found it sunk the next spring. Sent it somewhere in New England for restoration and got it back 2 years later. Could buy several G23's for what they have in that boat but what the heck, they live on trust funds.

A couple of times I have seen new woodies at shows - typically they have a very thin clear fibeglass coating which they say makes it maintenance free (or lower) but only time would tell - I have heard there is a problem covering wood with FB but don't know. The boats seemed to start at 50K when I first saw them 10 years ago.

I LOVE the woodies too but don't think I'd enjoy the upkeep

there's a huge woodie boat show in mccall up here every year. beautiful boats to look at, but that's really about all you can do with them is look at them. 95% of the owners here are hovering in mid-60's and just putt around the lake. not really sure what else you would do with one.
I guess I'd rather have a boat that you can get a family on, recreate behind, and not have to put in the time and efforts maintaining the wood. now if i was in a 7-figure income bracket, might have one as a second boat to enjoy, but otherwise, they seem like a major expense for a reminder of days gone by.

you can ski behind a wood boat I have seen it in person many times on a lake in northern minnesota but I guarantee this guy that owns them has more money than 99.9 % of the people on this board put together he has something like 30 woodies I think... they ski, tube, wakeboard and fly around the lakes in them like any ski boat would

Learned to ski behind a 57 Chris Craft Cavalier and currently own a 66 Chris Craft Super Sport 18' and Supra 24 SSV. Owning a wood boat is like owing a classic car more work but worth it. If you buy one try to get one with a new 5200 bottom.
