I miss my Expedition and will have another one in my future. Suburbans, Escalades, etc. always felt like driving a big long skinny tube with crappy turn radius and visibility compared to my Expedition.

As our 3 are getting bigger, having them ride side-by-side is becoming more difficult on the 2hr ride to the lake. It sometimes becomes the "he/she is on my side" battle that we don't endure when in hte SUV.

The debate my wife & I are having is about what we would have instead as we use the truck all the time for runs to Lowe's for lumber/plants/dirt, carrying gas to the lake, etc. I know you can rent one when needed, but that seems like it would grow old, real quick.

Absolutely no regrets with the Yukon wolfeman131! Pulls great, seats 7, and gets better gas mileage than the Trailblazer SS she used to have pulling a smaller boat!http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/05/tu3a4aje.jpg
And hey, Home Depot sells utility trailers for all that other stuff your truck hauls now. Kids not fighting is worth WAY more to me than the price of one of those.....just sayin.

I need to get some wheels and tires but since I got the boat I've been dumping all of my extra fun money into it. If I get my ballast project done this winter maybe I'll finally get some.. 33x12.5x20 Nitto Terra Graps on some Chrome Gear Recoils, Black or Chrome XD Cranks, Black or Chrome XD Hoss, or something. Not real sure, there are a lot of choices out there but I want to avoid the "He has those too" wheels. But they will be either +18 or +20 Offset.

Deff better milage then most gas trucks, deff higher maintenance then gas trucks.
The pay off is the power you have pulling, the extra room you get in a 3/4 and 1 ton truck vs a 1/2 ton.

I bit the bullet and changed my tow rig. Every decade or more I change vehicles as I put less than 4500 miles a year on them. My 2002 Blazer needed so much work so I went shopping and got this 2004 with 70K miles. I got it for $10K minus $3500 for the Blazer so I got it out the door for $7200. BTW, the camera didn't do it justice as it is a dark yellow all the way around but I use it only for the boat and dirt bikes and I was looking for functionality. Easy to find in the parking lot.

So the hard part is figuring out what I will be doing the next 10 years and being 55 years old now tells me things will be a changing. I hope not, but I'm prepared to pull a fishing boat around.

I did a little experiment tonight to see the relationship between speed and fuel mileage on my way to work. During my drive I encounter speed limits ranging from 55-75 mph so I would reset the fuel mileage calculator on my truck each change to get an average economy for each speed. Truck is a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab 2WD Hemi

55 mph - 22.8 mpg
60 mph - 21.7 mpg
65 mph - 20.3 mpg
70 mph - 19.6 mpg
75 mph - 17.3 mpg

Clear drop off as speed increases, especially from 70 to 75

Yes sir, mainly due to wind resistence on the truck. Also most vechicles are tunes to recieve there best milage at 55mph. Once you cross over that and engine RPM increases you start losing milage because now the engine is working past its prime tuned RPM vs trans gear = speed. The very same is true in your boat and any other vechicle you drive.

Now if only your truck got that good of milage all the time LOL.

moombadaze

but what about the difference from 55 to 75, that's a lot of mpg saved at 55

Not sure i understand what your asking here.

The actual average MPG difference from 55 - 75 is only going to be 2-3mpg difference. Daves is so much harger because hes doing a small distance, at each speed. Many factors can change this including small uphill that you might not even notice but yet the truck notices it.

The only true way to get an average MPG is go several hundred miles at each speed over the same length of road in the same conditions. This is one of the reasons manufactures will say a vechicle gets X city and X highway and even those numbers are pretty conservative.

In my truck when it does the average MPG its over the last 500 miles since you reset the MPG.

I can be going down I5 towards Woodburn at 65 and average 19 MPG and then turn around and drive the exact same stretch and get 23MPG because even though it looks level to your eye you are actually going up hill to Woodburn.

You also have to factor in Wind. If you have a headwind the truck might be going 70 but a 10mph headwind makes the truck feel as though its going 80 and vis versus if you have a tail wind.

I've been working on my truck a lot lately, this is what I do. I get caught up in phases of "the next new thing to do" and I usually go a little crazy with it and them it dies down.

Mods completed in the past couple weeks include:
BHLM (black headlight mod)
Debadged-I had all the badges/emblems plastipped but think debadging looks much cleaner
Oracle halos on hi/low
Plast-dipped my front/rear chrome bumpers and also front grille and chrome grille surround.

I put Bilstein 5100's on all four sides to level it.

Just received my Volant CAI yesterday and started putting together. Wanted to get it installed tonight after work but it's rainy today, we'll see if it clears up. Tomorrow I am receiving my Aries bull guard so I'll install that tomorrow night.

Next mods:
4.5" rough country lift (next spring)
New tires (Keeping the stock steelies for now and will upgrade next year.)-going with Goodyear Duratracs, size TBD.

So I just found out that the Dodge Hemi trucks have copper spark plugs with a service interval of 30,000 miles. So I am only 61,600 miles past due on my spark plug change. I was planning on waiting until I hit 100,000 miles and since I am at 91,600 I probably still will. Will be interesting to see what the old ones look like when I get them out.

Kinda weird to not have to do any tuneup stuff for so long isn't it. I just rolled over 100k not too long ago and figure I 'm due for a tune as well. Haven't done anything at all besides oil, filter, antifreeze, etc since I bought it 55k miles ago, figure it's time. Maybe I can squeeze a little better power and mpg back out of it again.

Debating on a tranny flush. Not sure if that would extend the life for a few more summers of boat pulling or just be flushing $ down the dipstick.

I typically follow this schedule.

Oil and filter and tire rotation every 5,000 miles

Air filter every 15,000 miles

Tranny fluid every 25-30,000 miles

Rear diff, spark plugs, decarb, brake flush, power steering flush, coolant flush every 100,000 miles

I put 20-25,000 a year on my vehicles so I get up to 100k fairly quick

Here's the two trucks the 21v spends most of it's time behind. The dodge is mine, it's an 03 cummins 6 speed with nearly 200k on it now. It's 100% stock besides a 4" turbo back straight pipe. Gets about 20-21mpg unloaded and 14-16 pulling, not too bad. The chevy is my brothers, it is a 2009 duramax. It sits on a 6" lift with 22x14 inch rims wrapped in 37" tires.

Our "truck" is my wife's "truck". (we get crap from some people who say it's not a real truck, but it's got a tailgate and a bed, so who cares if it's IFS/IRS with a trunk under the bed???)

2009 Honda Ridgeline RTL. Bought it with under 10k miles and it now has only 21k. It's Stock and rollin' on the stock 18's... (the wife doesn't mod things like I do).

The first trip out on the Supra:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RaoUbHpmHQM/UYKfgEs1s8I/AAAAAAAAN4k/wY2k4jt1Pq0/s1000/%255BUNSET%255D.jpg

I honestly have no desire to have a typical "truck". I'm prefectly happy driving my M3 cabrio or sportbike when it's sunny out, and driving my Audi wagon when it's raining. Plus, so many of these trucks lifted with giant tires that never see anything but pavement. I roll on 35's but it's so I can go places none of these pretty trucks would ever go.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-QeMNdMGKB4k/TIZy3Ng1bsI/AAAAAAAAKkI/vjfmmrubHfM/s1000/CameraZOOM-20100906160932.jpg
(one of these days I might try pulling the Supra with the Jeep since it's got upgraded axles, brakes, etc; but the reciever is tweaked so it points a little down and the drawbar was at an angle to the coupler and it didn't want to hitch up the day I was gonna try it. it didn't help that the boat is parked on my sloped RV spot. In the end, I just take the wife's Ridgeline and have her drive the Audi for our 10 mile drive to the ramp...)

Bottom line is that I hate having redundant vehicles. The ridgeline is awesome to get the wife to work if it snows (AWD) and still gets decent gas mileage and gives her a comfy ride like an SUV. It still has a 5000 pound tow rating and gets the Supra to/from the launch just fine. It's never so much as spun a tire when pulling out the boat on the wet or even sandy pavement. It does have a bed that we've used to haul sheets of plywood, cinder blocks, a mess of old wheels/tires, and more. Plus, she has the trunk under the bed to put the groceries into when it's raining.

The Audi gets us up to the mountain during ski/snowboard season quite comfortably, and has plenty of hauling room in it's own right. And the M3 vert, the Sportbike, and the Jeep are just plain fun.

There is a part of me though that wishes I would have kept my 2004 Explorer XLT V8 (single color factory paint, dropped on 20's, billet grills, dual exhaust, etc). It would have been a fun tow rig.

Come on now, it's 2,000 pounds for the 2 door and 3,500 for the 4 door unlimited.

And yeah, it's all about wheelbase. TJ's have basically the same running gear as a comparable Cherokee and the cherokees get 5000 to the TJ's 2000.

Thanks Berg!!! 😎

I was getting 15.5 on average beforehand. I have an 8 mile drive from the lake to town at 70mph then city lights, stopping and going traffic while in town. With the lift and tires I now get between 13.5-14 on average. Not a big difference, but it's all in how you drive. I love that on dash, instant mph gauge it helps tremendously on being able to see instant results when on and off the gas pedal!!!

On 12hr drives cross country at 80mph I was getting 18. I'm sure this will be drastically reduced now that I'm 6" taller than stock. I'll making that drive again in January and will let you know.

Thanks. You have a bada$$ looking truck. I ordered it around Christmas and they were running a deal on xtremedieselperformance.com for $750 instead of $1,000 so I said screw it. Eventually I am going to do a 32" LED 3,200 lumen light bar instead of the 4 9" lights.

What bags do you have? I did the firestone air helper springs on mine with an onboard compressor.

I've been wondering about adding bags when we add a trailer or 5th wheel to the mix - guess I'll have to wait and see. I may be sitting too high for a 5er.

Couple updates - new toyos, dual steer stabilizer, tinted front glass to match the rest. I've had a new touchscreen DVD HU, amp, backup cam, etc. sitting in the garage since October waiting to go in. Waiting for a non-busy, dry, semi warm weekend that is...

Heres the new set up.

I have been doing a lot of reseach on the Roadmaster Active Suspension and I think I am finally ready to pull that trigger. With a 10% up to 40% over load on the adjustments I can set it up with no sag.

Plus it stops wheel hop, axle wrap from torque when you mash the skinny pedal.
I have always had air bags but I don't like the stiff harsh ride of the rear end. The RAS is claimed to be a very simular to factory when unloaded as well as loaded.

This is stock, once I get the RAS installed I'll get measurements of ride height and drop with the boat.

BERG,
Never too high for a 5'er - JK. Really depends on trailer and truck. Alot of trailers come pretty high as it is and might not need much modification other than adjustments on the hitch. There is usually a good couple inches of adjustment on them (at least my B&W there is).
Air bags are a must imo if your going to be doing some heavy hauling/towing. I added them when I was pulling our 26ft. bumper pull and it helped alot. With 6" lift on the Duramax I did have to lift the fifth wheel as you know and go with a full travel air bag set-up from Cognito as standard factory size kit wasn't gonna work.

moombadaze

bergermaister
02-27-2014, 06:26 PM
Thanks Irish - It's riding on a Superlift 4" kit. I did have a bit of death wobble here and there on a hard uneven hit but the dual stabilizer masked/fixed it well enough.

If we go the 5er route I'm going to have to ditch the canopy and probably end up with a tonneau. Then air bags would be a must since the ones we've been looking at are triple axle monsters.

If we go the trailer route I'll bet the weight distribution hitch will take most any tail sag out of the equation.

clarkely

Most axles are flipped already now a days... Almost all ride springs above now...

I am a big fan of bags and onboard air to adjust as necessary.... Been using airlift smart air as an easy all inclusive system....

Also run a viar dual compressor set up to a 8.5 gallon tank for the train horn and air connection for tools... Tires.... Rafts...

Air bags really come into play for the camper....

I also like my auxiliary fuel tank.... So I get fuel when I want...... Not because I have to..... Carrying 76 gallons total...

We went to the RV show this winter and those big 5th wheels went from 60K-160K so for a 30year your talking 350-1K a month.

We saw a really sweet one I would love to have if I went that direction, living room was in the upper section, sofa on both sides, double recliners in the middle, 60 inch flat screen on the front panel. Then kitchen dinning room on the center of trailer, full bathroom, washer dryer, behind the kitchen and king size master sweet in the back. Was real real nice and it was 100K

Very true. My brother has 4 boys age 10-15. He bought a shortbed ext cab Silverado 2500. Then dropped 14k on a used camper and then another 2500 working out bugs, getting his truck setup with airbags and extended hitch to tow the boat, etc. Close to 20k into it all now and it's TINY... Seemed like a weird direction to go considering his family size.

I'm new to this board, but I have a '14 Ram 1500 and it's the second best thing I have ever bought (first being my '14 Mondo). The quad cab on most pick ups can seat 5 grown adults comfortably, and they are more luxury inside than SUV's. Just my two cents, but I love my truck after 12000 miles in 7 months, and she's never failed me. The towing package was an added bonus and was a smooth ride.

Thanks in advance.

I used to tow with a 1 Ton F350 all the time.

Now I tow with a F150 Eco.
Mileage towing Sucks in Oregon, lots of hills. On the highway I see typically 10-10.5. Hills I see 8-9
When not towing though I see 18.5 so that's nice. Drove from OR to El Paso Texas and back was at 70-80mph all the time averaged 18 entire time.

Yes there is a new Eco Diesel in Ram 1500s with comparable power to the EcoBoost. Better mileage unhooked - mid 20s.
I personally don't know anyone with one to give a report on towing performance and mileage.

Back to the Ecoboost, it seriously tows like a Beast for a v6 gas. I went to Prineville, and Lake Billy a few times this year, bed of the truck loaded, boat loaded, 5 adults. Had to be pushing 8K with gear, people, boat over the trucks normal weight and it pulled all mountains at 60+ no problem, with Cruise on, without, my foot was never more then 1/2 way into it.

When it comes to towing power the EcoBoost gets my vote for serious muscle. I would stack it to any 1/2 Ton Gas engine out there for Towing.

Have not had a truck in over 25 years, just SUVs, back to basics right.

should be fine . I will let you know in a couple weeks when I take the boat of the lift for its winter nap

its the 1500 5.3 with tow package including electric braking if needed, should be better than the suburban 1500.

I assume since you live in NY you will see flying salt and stones soon. To keep it looking great might want to check into a clear bra. The front of the fenders will get hit, our first stop for out new 2500HD was to have one installed.

Bought the 2015 Ford Expedition with Eco Boost today. They only had this one for a few days, and it was the first one sold from this dealer. We were debating on the EL or the regular length, and opted for the regular this go around. You can see the old suburban in the back ground.

Nice ride! I found myself counting your lugs (hope you don't mind).

Walked by an F-150 the other day and saw 7 lugs. Shook my head, rubbed my eyes, looked again. Yep 7. So weird.

The Eco's have so much torque they were snapping lugs. Many of us are drilling and adding the seventh lug to correct the problem. Some have tried to add 2 lugs for an even 8 but it's just to tight to get two more in there. Especially when you go to drill your wheels.

It was hard not to do the EL after having the Suburban. Had they had one, I would've probably opted for it. Jill knew exactly what color/options she wanted and sure enough of the two they had on the lot this one fit the bill.

Good looking ride, have to tell us how it tows. It doesn't have the same tuning as the F150 EcoBoost. Yours has 365/350 vs 365/420

Unless the listed specs are wrong, it's the same 365/420

I disagree with both of you lol! Everything I've been reading has it at 370/430. More than our precious F150's. But I'm tuned haha!

Funny, we had just bought a 2011 Suburban in June. She wasn't a fan of how big it was. She does a lot of driving in downtown Indianapolis and parking garages so we picked up the new Tahoe. Luckily I didn't take to much of a hit on the Suburban.
The new tahoe is much nicer then the '11 suburban and the burban was really nice LTZ. Does the new Suburban have the nav screen that slides up with storage behind it?

Dropped by my parents last night to check out my dad's new Ford Raptor. I'll get a better picture later of the actual truck. Man that thing is sweet.
