View Full Version : My first attempt at a 3 - FAIL!

So I guess one small video turned out from the last trip's night surf. This was my first attempt at throwing a 360.

So what's the trick? Bury the tail, dig with one arm, then transfer weight back to the nose as you come around? Need more speed? More daylight and less beers?

How fast do you surf at?

we had a triple xxx rider on the boat one day that can spin one after the other. it was sick to watch..

advice he gave us was to get to the front part of the wake to give a lot of room for the recovery and use your right hand to dig into the top of the wake and use it as a guide as you go around, then just spin..

it was a lot easier to watch than try :)
good luck..

Ditto on the surf speed.. we go 9.8 mph on the ppass . nice and clean , like yours .
Jim. ( Still waiting for the broken ankle to heal so I can get back out .. Been 5 weeks , 2 1/2 to go. )

Good attempt. Keep trying. I was getting close but haven't been out in two weeks now. It's raining now too. Uggghhh!!

How fast do you surf at?

Speed will be dictated by the boat. In my OBV, the best speed for us was 9.5-10.0. In the Mojo, we run 10.5-11.5. The amout of ballast we fill, number of crew, conditons and tricks being worked on will impact the speed we run at. It's hardly ever the same every time.

FWIW - at the CWSA (Competitive WakeSurf Association http://www.thecwsa.org) sanctioned events, they run the competions at 10.7 mph on the Centurion Enzo SV244 boat.

Drew, at those comps, I was under the impression the rider could request the speed. Not true?

then, post on the Walker's blog about how friggin' awesome they are for sharing the knowledge!

Drew, at those comps, I was under the impression the rider could request the speed. Not true?

I think the girls could request that the plate be moved up or down, but I believe speed was held constant. That way, each rider is given the same amount of time to cover the course. In theory, a rider could request a slower speed which would result in more time on the course and therefore able to attempt more tricks.

What, you didn't like my redneck helmet Drew? :p

Setup was : 1100 rear locker, 5 kids surf side + driver, 400 in bow. No wakeplate. Speed 10.5-11.

That's my IS Squirt board. Smoothest water I've ever surfed on and it REALLY makes a difference in the wave. Not much dialing in required when it's like that. I suppose we could have experimented a little but we were more interested in playing around than anything.

I'm thinking next attempt will be with more weight for a taller wave and longer pocket so I can even have a chance at recovery if I make it all the way around.

I keep thinking of the old days of riding a skateboard and doing a spin up on the back wheels. Not quite the same.

Ah makes sense. Are you guys making up to MN for the comp next month? I think my older two (13 and 10) are going to enter. The lake is about an hour from us.

Yes, we will be there.

Unfortunately, it's been posted that registration is sold out. You might try the link nbelow to get in touch with the organizers and see if there is something they can do for you.

Thanks for those links Drew - good stuff. Looks like I've got some studying to do now.

Yup, those links are good. I was reaching out with both hands and that's probably wrong as it gets you too far off axis, if you will. Here's the only pic I have of one of my attempts. On this one I didn't get all the way around. Later in the day I was going too far. Worked on that but never rode one out yet. If I learn anything useful I'll let you know.

Perfect. I posted what I think I saw in your thread. Let us know what you think after reading that stuff and re-watching your video.

Okay after 6-8 attempts tonight I finally pulled off a full spin but lost the wave. Kept my balance and sank straight down with the board. But man it felt good. No video or picture proof of course - you'll just have to take my word for it this time! Now if I can just remember what the hell I did so I can do it again.

Here's some of my attempts. I need some help. When I tried using only my right hand I could not get all the way around. With two I am getting around pretty quickly. I need to spot the boat and get on the gas. Any advice is welcome.

you're at about the same point as I am, I think we are over rotating.. I am not quite sure how to stop the rotation I usually just end up spinning around as well.

both kane and spyder have the same problem (its a good problem though). When you come around, crouch more which will dig in your toe-side edge and stop the rotation.

Hmmmm. That could be quite useful. Thanks!

You've got some great spin speed there Kane. I was only getting to about 270 and slipping the board out the first few tries so I'm thinking not enough spin speed but was doing that with no hand drag. Are you guys are digging the tail in for just a split second when you first start your spin before you transfer weight to the front again?

kaneboats
08-07-2012, 01:49 PM
I don't know about digging the tail. I feel more like I'm trying to just surf in a very tight circle. If you watch Wolfeman's daughter she is really just surfing in a nice tight circle-- very balanced.

here ya go:

FWIW, slow and steady is how the pros told the girls to go.

She's definitely coming out of each one crouched way lower than where I am and digging a little on her inside edge with her toes. I didn't mention earlier that I was about 400 lbs. lighter than normal because my under seat bag would not fill and the day was getting away from us so we just surfed without it. A little more push next time might help me too.

My nephew was making regular 360s behind my OBV. After reviewing the pics, I noticed that he is crouched quite bit. Knee's bent at 90 degrees. I tried a few weeks ago but stuffed the rail into my right elbow and am only just recovering. :-(
