Gang,

After my last post about the new LSV, it got me thinking about how much boats costs and I did some quick math.

In 2005 I bought my boat, a 2001 Outback DD (so 4 years old) with 100 hours for $20k (about 60% of what a 2005 would have cost?*)

*This is based on a guess of a $35k cost for a new 2005 like mine. Not sure how accurate, but has to be close.

If I were to buy a boat now under similar circumstances (4 years old, so a 2008) for about 60% of new cost ($45k for an LSV?) I should be able to get one for about $27k. Sound about right?

So I searched Boat Trader for all ski & wakeboard boats within 500 miles from 2007 to 2009 from between $25k and $30k... and there were 2 listings. A 2007 Outback DD for $29k and a Ski Nautique 196 for $30k.

So maybe I was optomistic with my pricing, so I bumped it to 60% of $50k (about $30k) and a few more listings popped up... (searched between $30k and $35k)

2007 Mobius LSV $34k
2006 Gekko $31k (new motor?)
2008 iRide $33.5k
2009 Mobius LS $35k (70 hours)
2008 SN 196 $34k
2008 SN 2006 $35k

Still more money than I figured one would spend.

So all Mobius LSV in 500 miles for ANY price...

the 2007 from above ($34k)
a 2008 for $40k! (can't you almost get a new one for this?)

So I guess I am confused. Is this due to inflation, or did I just get a awesome deal on my boat? What is the depreciation per year on these type of boats? I thought the economy was not doing well?

Thoughts?

Boat prices are way up!!! Good news is you can probably still get close to $15K-$20K for your boat. Lots of reasons I think.....
-New boat prices are much higher now, so that will drive up the used market
-Low supply of used wakeboard boats right now
-Out of country buyers (Canada and Australia) buying boats in the US
-Very few Repo boats in the market any longer

All these add up to the perfect storm (HIGH prices)

Not sure but I think new LSVs are going for upper 40s to low 50s.

I have no clue with the DD boats.

Yup I did a quite a bit of work on mine and I am hoping to get low $20's for it yet, 02 LSV loaded.

I know I got a screaming deal but to think that I paid under 22k for a 2008 Moomba DD with 86hrs in mint condition 3 years ago sure does make me happy.

3 years ago was the time to buy. Boats were cheap. You could sell the boats you bought brand new back then today for what you paid for it.... Those days are long gone.

The problem for me is that I am not going to sell my current boat. My wife wants to rip all the wakeboard related stuff off of it and convert it to a "slalom only" boat. So in a couple of years when I finish grad school, I will be wanting to up grade to a v-drive with no trade or large down payment. Also, by that time, my truck will have 200k miles on it so I will have to replace that too. And have you seen the price of trucks! Oh well, that is why I have to buy used stuff!

It kind of sucks because as much as I love my boat and Moomba and would love to support Skier's Choice and my awesome dealer here (White Lake Marine) with a new boat purchase, I don't see it ever happening. I will have to keep buying used stuff. I also do all my own maintenance and cleaning, so the only way I can support them is if I buy parts. In fact, I have mentioned this before, I wish White Lake Marine would set up a "Moomba Parts" website like they have done for the "Nautique Parts," I would buy all of my maintenance stuff from them. I hate having to walk into the MC dealer here and buy impellers and oil filters and spark plugs, but they are 15 minutes down the road. And yes, I go out of my way to buy OEM parts, like a Penzoil PZ3 filter, not some parts store knock off.

My Outback is a FANTASTIC boat. I have had it for 7 years, have about 550 hours on it, and it has NEVER been to the dealer, or ANY mechanic, for ANY problems.

Oh well, maybe in a couple of years, Santa RickT will be wanting to help a loyal Moomba brother out!

My wife would kill me if I thought about buying another boat right now. Even if it crosses my mind I would never be able to get another new 23' v drive for what I paid for my 2010 in July of 2011. I got a great price and it seems that the new model pricing is creeping up each year.

Plenty of deals out there, just take more then 5 minutes to find. I love old junk but that's just me. I built my old centurion into a good wakeboard boat and even surfed behind it. Confused why you would take parts off? Enjoy, sell when ready, buy more used junk. I stole my new piece of crap and couldn't be happier!

Dealers love to sell used boats too...

A 2001 Outback probably stickered in the $22-23K range new. A 2005 in the $25-26K range. So, start with that ration instead of your 60%.

While shopping for my 2008 (new), Sticker started at $28K. My optioned boat was $32K new.

The bigger shock for me was a new 2002 MC 197 that stickered at $31K in 02. In 2008, that 197 started at $52K
A 2012 197 starts at $54K
All of the numbers must be based on sticker, as dealers can deal based on time of year and models.

In 07 the economy was still kicking and people could finance or roll excess in to the monthly payment. Recently, many of those buyers can't get financed or have rethought their money and like goals. To sell now, they must get what they owe out of a boat. This is a similar effect that car leasing had on the car industry in the late 90s/early 2000s. Artifical residuals that drove up used car prices. Now, amount owed on a loan is driving many sell prices on items like boats/RVs.

Boat trader/nada and related boat sale sites aren't reliable price indicators, dealers listings throw everything out of wack, a boat is worth only what someone is willing to pay and that varies based on the season/location... :)

These are the 2 best sites, wait for the end of the season if you're looking, I got my 2002 lsv near $16k.. :)

Crazy stuff! Gonna upgrade to a vdrive eventually for the room and I'm getting older so slalom priority is losing ground. At any rate its inevitable. I'll deal with the prices at that time but figure I can get close to what I paid for mine right now (granted I have over 6k in upgrades) I'm including and can certainly remove. But I'm in no hurry and will wait for the right deal. Because of the closest S C dealer I will most likely b in another brand but price to me has more to do with where, how, and why you buy than MSRP :)

All good points.

The reason I would take parts off is to get the weight as low as possible which equals smaller slalom wake. I have the first gen Rad-A-Cage and it is not a very sturdy tower, so its not worth much. The boat is already AWSA approved, and it will soon be paid for. Also, by the time I get a V-drive, I will have to replace the carpet and vinyl. A 15 year old direct drive "ski" boat with a tower will be pretty low in demand by the time I move to the V-drive.

I am guessing my boat cost a bit more than the $22k-$23k when new. It came pretty loaded with a tower, racks, lights, and a ballast system. But I guess in 2005, $30k for a loaded up one sounds more accurate.

lmao, I sold my 21 year old "ski boat with a tower" (heard that one before) for $8500, I don't feel that's chump change. It sold easily too since I kept it immaculate.

You own a DD boat, that means you get it. If you didn't you would own a i/o!! Even worse you could be land locked! Just being out there has given me the opportunity to ride behind and drive just about every wakeboard boat out there.

I also fallow my neighbor down the road with his new $100k mastercraft and watch his super duper power tower flex like every other tower, I would love to ditch my rad-a-cage but not for functionality reasons, seems to yank me around fine and my pro 80's and bimini have not bent it in half either.

I hope you are enjoying your boat since that's what its all about anyways, sounds like you are a hard core water skier which means you have the perfect boat for your needs.

When you get the v-drive you will miss the fuel bill from your dd.

I hear you. Been saying this for awhile now. Back 2 to 3 years ago there was a glut of boats on the market. I don't know what happened, but I think around 07 to 08 and even 09 they were making more. In 2010 I was finding new leftover 2008s everywhere but wasn't quite ready to buy. A guy posted a very nice looking and well optioned 2008 LSV for 33k here, it had 35 hours on it - bought in 2009 as a 2008 leftover and selling in spring of 09. I talked with a dealer that was showing high 30s for a new 09 LSV. I just wasn't ready to pull the trigger. Now a new LSV seems to be about 10k more. They will probably go up even more with the new redesign but I hope not.

Worst part is that there are no dealers in my area. I could probably be at the factory in 2:45 but no dealers nearby. Ideally, I want to buy a boat only delivered to my lift with no trailer, but with no local dealer to support the product that makes it tough. The new boats that might be in my price range if I get a great deal are probably Moomba and MB but all the dealers nearby are MC, Malibu, Tige'.

Where are you located? Maybe I can bring you a new LSV from Atlanta. You'll be happy with the price.

If I was going to keep a ski only boat I'd look for something like this:

Diggs is right on but I think there are more people with more money into their boat than what they can pay off. So these people are asking more to try to pay off their loans. When a boat gets into the $45K and above, the payoff is rather minimal for some time.

I am in Nashville and am seriously considering a new v drive. Can't find any steals used so I'm considering new Moomba or MB. Are you a dealer? pm me if you have a line on a really good deal. Haven't decided for sure whether to buy or not.

Off today and typing from the marina wifi. Hitting the lake now! Bye.

Not a 2013.

This was the last year of production for that model.
