View Full Version : Got Prop issues? I just got the Diesel of Props. ACME 1617 its a beast

I was runing the well known OJ Wake Board prop 14.25 x 14. This is a really sweet prop, awesome hole shot and great acceleration but has 1 huge limiting factor, noisy, lots of vibrations.
Up untill last summer i wasnt having to much problems and once i hit that magical 3K ballast mark my prop started to show its weakness. If i was running a surf wake apx 2200 lbs plus people i couldnt get over 15mph, why would you want to? If you need to hit the marina or drop someone off at the doc but you had your wave all dialed in, you dont want to drain and refill. Just put everyone on the opposite side and roll out. Well i couldnt as the prop was maxed, she was giving all she had.
I talked to Spencer at wake makers and asked what he thought was the best prop. This year im running nearly 4K ballast plus people and i dont want to hear prop growl, vibrations, or have hole shot issues.
Joking he said ill hook you up with the Diesel of props. This thing pulls like your truck does. Its got a little lower top end of course but the power in unreal in a prop, and its actually smaller in diamiter for better trailer clearence. I personally dont have that issue as i had my bunks all raised the first year.
I got this prop and installed it.
The ACME 1617 4 Blade propeller offers the most aggressive holeshot and acceleration for heavily weighted boats, but in a slightly smaller diameter for boats that have clearance issues.
If you use your boat entirely for wakesurfing and wakeboarding, and have added a significant amount of additional ballast, the ACME 1617 propeller will restore your boats acceleration, speed holding and fuel economy.
Specifications
Diameter: 14"
Pitch: 13.75"
Cup: .105
Rotation: Left Hand
Shaft: 1 1/8"
Water test time. Leaving the doc, its super quite, hit it up to 11mph to see what surf speed noise, nothing silent just engine noise. I was feeling pretty good about this prop.
I slowed down to idle then punched it. Boat jumped out of the water on plane in about 5 seconds and was doing 28 before i even looked at the speedo. Wow not bad but the boat is empty.
We loaded up the nose and some rear weight for wake boarding and off we went. I took it easy on the pull ups as i knew this prop was stought. I got out there and pull ups were great, but still nothing really different then the OJ prop just ran a lot quiter.
Yesterday was the real turning point of this prop.
We had the surf wave dialed in and were surfing. Claudia gets off work comes tot he lake, text me shes at the doc. Were across the lake, so i get back in the boat, we all sit on the opposite side, were running axp 2500lbs of ballast for surfing. Wake plate down and we hit it, 10 comes fast, then 15, then 25 and then 30MPH smooth no problem for this prop at all. Me and Steve were shocked as the OJ wont go over 15. We slowed down to 25 as thats teh cruising speed i prefer. Ran over to the doc and picked her up. Enjoyed the rest of the day. This prop is simply amazing. You dont even realize the power of it till you weight the boat, its as if when you weight it the prop knows it and really comes to life.
Then came the last final test, 2 days on the lake both days were 4hours on the engine. This is very average for us and im pretty consistent 1/2 tank a fuel a day in the boat, as we will up every time we go out. 20 gallons a day average over 3 summers, when we goto the Hagg.
Both days it only took 14 gallons to fill up. Thats a 6 gallon savings over normal and at 20 bucks a day savings that means every 3rd time out is free LOL compared to our normal cost. Now i know this is only the first week, ill be keeping tabs. A savings of apx 1 gallons per hour of running is very respectable.

No not yet lol. I will next weekend when we go out. My old prop was 37 i would expect this prop to be right around 35 but ill check.

i know this might be dumb but will it fit under the 04 DD ? i need an upgrade since my stock prop would rather not be on plane and bogg the boat down..and now that i hit a dumb log and bent a little part on the prop and a nice vibration ,im in the market

Id like to think it does as its slightly smaller in diameter then wake board prop. Its 13.75 in diameter. WHat size prop is on your boat right now?
Or you can try calling Wake Makers or ACME to ask they should know also.

Mike, did you ever to a top speed run?
I think its about the same as my OJ wake prop, we were doing 35mph at 4K RPM not to much RPM left before the boat cuts us off.
The best part is i was running 3K ballast and 5 adults at 35mph. This prop is a beast man. My average fuel consumption has gone down as well. I was averaging 5-5.7 gallons per engine hour
We averaged 4-4.5 gallons per engine hour. Only 1 gallon an hour savings but thats about 10 bucks a day in fuel we are saving. That adds up at 30 a week and 120 a month average savings, that means this prop will pay for its self by this time next year just in fuel savings.
Over the 4 day weekend we added 16hours to the boat

Mike, very good review, and after reading Engine nuts comments about reaching max rpm with full load it sounds like you have found the best prop for your use. and that gas saving is amazing

I had the Acme 1617 installed this winter and finally was able to try it out today. We were running 1100s in the rear lockers and had the center tank and 750 ibs full. We also had 6 people in the boat. I was very disappointed. I am not sure if we had too much weight in the back or what the deal was but there was minimal improvement if any over the old 537 that came with the boat. Anyone have any thoughts on what I may be missing? I was expecting the boat to get up and go like it would with minimal weight. We were not able to get on plain. I dumped some ballast and was finally able to get the boat up to 20. Are my expectations too high or is the prop not right?

Mike, what boat do you have. I'm wondering if this prop will give me the same results in my craz.

This thread really peaked my interest too. From what I can tell he was running an lsv when this thread was started in 2012. I'd be interested to know what he's running on that mojo 2.5

I didn't check the date on this thread, wondering what was up. He sold the prop in this forum. I'm assuming because he sold the boat.

I ran the 1617 in my LSV, and it was a beast. It ran 1 1,110 bag fine along with the center, ibs, and an extra 400 lbs, but I think running 2 1,100s at the same time would've been too much. The engine just didn't have enough power to do all of that.
I pulled the 1617 off the LSV when I traded it, and will use it as a weekend saver prop only. I called Wakemakers and they approved of it for that. For the mojo & craz, I believe the Acme 1235 or 2079 would be the ideal replacements

Just in case you don't see the prop thread in the general section from today, I'll post her as well.
I swapped the 1235 to a 2079 over the winter and it's night-and-day different. I'm running 3,000 - 3,400 of ballast and have no issues planning out. Last fall I had trouble with the 1235. Lose a couple mph on the top end, but I'll take that all day long over having issues planning out.

Hey guys, yes this was the LSV thread when I went to 1617 and its an awesome prop on the LSV. I sold that prop because I sold the boat, and on the Mojo I can run a better prop then the 1617.
On the Mojo I run the 2079 and its a beast as well. I responded on 07STI thread about that.

Another vote for the 2079 I have a 1235 and went to that. Hands down worth it!

Can't wait for my larger bags to really test out this OJ945 (15"x13p) at wake speeds and a boat load with full gas. I was thinking that I might have to up to the 2315 (15"x12p) and see what the RPM's do there. Will be out for the holiday weekend to really get numbers since I have lead that will act in having bigger bags in the rear. For the life of me I can't remember what RPM's are at with wake speeds with my current setup.
Hope to get a chance to learn this wake over the weekend...

I just tried tried the 1617 with horrible results. I've been running the 1847 and quite happy with it. Based on the reviews I've read here I thought I needed to try this thing. Ran great with zero weight. However, once the ballasts were filled 1900#'s I could barely get the boat to 10mph. Full throttle, 3400 rpms and maybe 12 mph. Couldn't even get the boat to plane. Needless to say it getting shipped back asap.

That doesn't sound right at all, did you have any nose weight? When I had the 1617 I was running 3K to surf and was able to get to surf speed no problems.
When wake boarding we would run 2500 even and it would get up and go just fine.

400lbs of human ballast in the nose. I wasn't even pulling a surfer. What elevation are you at? The 1847 I'm running had no problem with all ballast full + 5 adults.

I was in OR at the time, I think it was 1500-2K elevation.
I would have to lean on that 400lbs of nose weight vs the huge amount of tail weight was why you didn't plain.
I am not saying your wrong by any means, I just know how I ran mine when I had it lol.
The important thing is your happy with your performance, I just never had an issue with the 1617

I see you live in Spokane too. I run 1617 prop on my 13 LSV and never had those issues. Unfortunately I bent it at Long lake last weekend and now have to run my 537 tell it's fixed.

Isn't that funny. I should run it by precision propeller and make sure WM's didn't accidentally send me an out of spec. Prop. Now hat I have the 1847 back on I should re-test and make sure I wasn't experiencing engine issues. I guess this is one of those times when the enemy of good is....

But the 1847 would plain perfectly with the same set up plus more human weight in the back. The other issue, was full throttle and couldn't plain. The 1847 popped right out ran between 2800 and 3000rpms and I had a ton of throttle left. With the 1617 the throttle was buried; couldn't plain or push her passed maybe 12mph. It sounds like I may have received an out of spec prop from WM's

When I had my LSV, I would run 1,500 lbs stbd, center full (whatever that was), and 600 lbs in the bow. The 1617 was the beast

i could surf all day with the 1847 and the exact same ballast set up. In fact we usually run zero weight in the nose and all passengers in the cock pit and back. Even my local prop shop guy was scratching his head. He kept saying on paper it should have been a big improvement over the 1847. The only thing he could come up with was the prop wasn't biting for some reason. I'm planning on trying the 1235 and tuning the pitch down incrementally till I get what I need.

I spoke to Jim at ACME props the other day... Right now I am running the OJ945 15X13 prop on my 2015 Moomba Mondo with the Raptor 400hp motor. The OJ945 has a ton of torque and has put the boat on plane without issue full of ballast (I have surf edition). My problem is that I have lost half the throttle range, in other words... Once I am at half throttle, the motor only increases in RPM but doesn't go any faster (I was expecting this but am not sure I like it). The other issue I have with the OJ945 is that because of the diameter it is louder, not sure how to explain that, it sounds like a humming noise ( I assume that is due to the size of the blades). When I spoke with Jim, he suggested several different solutions before settling on the ACME 1273. It is basically the 1235 with a more aggressive cup to give better low end torque. I haven't pulled the trigger but wanted to share that info. My goal is to find a prop that takes advantage of the entire throttle range, while also providing solid low end torque for surfing. Not sure if that is even possible.... If anyone has experience with the ACME 1273, please chime in...

I upgraded to the 1235 end of last year. It is great all around improvement over the stock OJ. Biggest improvement was the shape of wake and wave. Loss of 3 mph top end but I never go that fast. I am running surf edition stock ballast. Even with full ballast and full boat (8-12) people I can still jump on plane if needed.

Out on the water messing around right now. I've got an 08 LSV with the stock OJ prop (13.5x17.5 I think). Empty I ran 39 mph at 4700 rpm WOT. Wake ballast (1600 lbs) I ran 38 mph 4500 WOT. Since that is all within the range 4400-4800 per owners manual, I should be good. If I choose to upgrade to the 1617 for more hole shot, my weighted WOT rpms should go up. Is it possible for them to be too high?

Talked to a propeller tech and he said the 1235 was the choice for many years and acme came out with 1617 to allow more room between boat and trailer loading. The 1235 on Moombas (certain models) will cause prop burn on gel coat and also peel away at gel coat, just like ski supreme and centurion are notorious for. Makes me glad I also went with 1617 to stray away from this issue. He mentioned the 1617 is a better prop for heavily weighted boats and runs less risk of damaging gel coat or catching trailer during loading.

I bought the ACME 1273 and was very happy with my test run. I gained back full throttle range and was happy with the 47 top end speed. When I weighted the boat down with full ballast I was running 2500rpms with a nice wave (about 10mph). I was still able to plane out with full ballast although I don't often run in that configuration. The prop seems to deliver on all my areas of concern so I am a happy camper with this prop.

Holy crap those are some low rpm's! ! Reminds me of our old DD mastercraft. We surfed at 1960-2100 rpm's those were the days of fuel sipping!
