I am buying a 2003 Moomba LSV and I need to replace the head unit. It has the stern and driver remotes. Has anyone replaced their head unit and found one that works with the factory remotes? I found an old thread that mentioned a Kenwood model that had the light blue wire for the remote but that unit has been discontinued and I cannot find any other head units that have that blue wire.

Thank you!!!

If you're taking about a HU from 2003 it may be tricky to find one that will be compatible with remotes that old. Most likely going to have to hunt eBay or similar. Stereo HU and Remotes seem to go discontinued within 3-5yrs or less anymore.

Post up the model numbers and maybe someone can help you out as they are sitting at work bored to tears.

If you can find a Kenwood KM440u that one is compatible. I had one in my '05. They discontinued it in place of the KM550U. Both have iPod control. I don't see why those remotes wouldn't work with the new 550U either. They would just plug into the remote wire on the harness. Personally I use the RC107MR remotes because I didn't like those aeware ones that I had previously and the 107 has so much more functionality.

I have my old HU that I replaced when I upgraded my remotes and HU. I believe it is the same one that boat had. If you want mine to just replace yours PM me and I'll send you photos of it to confirm it will work.

Cheers and congrats on the new boat.

I think this one will do the trick. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KMR330/Kenwood-KMR-330.html?tp=1721&kw=&org=pla&nw=g&crv=6488476105

Congrats on the new boat!

I just installed a Kenwood KMR-550U and it works with the factory remote. It has the light blue/yellow wire you need for the remote hookup in the harness. I also bought a second Kenwood KCA-RC60MR remote to install on the stern which I need to do this week.

i have an 06 LSV, would upgrading the deck to the Kenwood 550 just be a real simple swap? would all the existing power/wiring work? Would just upgrading the deck allow me to get a bit more volume without the deck resetting itself like the stock one does above about level 22-24?

It should be a simple swap. You'll have to connect the wires from the boat to the wires in the harness for the radio. I think it's only 3 wires that is of course assuming that you aren't running the speakers off the head unit. You may even get lucky and see if the harness for your existing radio fits into the new one. But with it being so few wires it shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes to get the new radio installed and all wired up with the new harness.

The new radio should help you with your current situation. It definitely sounds like there is something wrong with your current radio.

No amp? Is it a Kenwood radio?

Even if you did have to wire it up it's pretty easy. All of the wires from the new HU are labeled. They should be on the old one too. Just disconnect the harness from the stock radio and take the old HU out. Then, disconnect each wire one at a time from the old harness and connect it to the new one. The color scheme should be the same or at least they should be labeled like Front +, Rear -, etc...

If you are running all 6 speakers off of the head unit it may be cutting out at the high volume due to the ohm load. You should look into getting a 4 channel amp to power your inboats and free up your radio...

Either you can install it or you can have a shop do it. Installing an amp isn't really difficult, the confined space of a boat makes it a little less than fun though. If you can install a ceiling fan or light fixture then you can install an amp.
