Prop - Rudder Clearance Help

So after a little ingenuity with a gear puller, c-clamp, heat gun and a couple beers I convinced my stock prop to come loose and installed the new Acme 1847. Trailer clearance looks fine with at least an inch or more to spare. I'm hoping that's enough...

The real question or thing that's bugging me now is that the clearance between the tip of the prop and the rudder when it is closest is only about 3/8" or so - I didn't measure with the stock prop but I can just tell that is a lot tighter. I know I'm looking at a totally different size and pitch here coming from the stock 13.7x17.5, but honestly it's got me a little nervous. Full rudder turn side to side does not hit or come any closer. Can someone take a look at theirs and tell me what kind of room they have between the rudder after upgrading to a 14x prop. How close is too close?

I'm sure there will be no movement or flex of any kind back there - uh, or would there be...


Other interesting/concerning thing I discovered is a bow in the rudder. Never noticed it before until today with the prop off. I've never felt it at all and the boat doesn't steer or pull to a side at all. Guess I'll leave it for now.

Any prop experts - am I in the danger zone with mine? Haven't hit the water yet but its coming soon.

Berg here's mine with my SS 14x14.75 prop on. I have a ton of clearance so our setups might be completely different.

Thanks Mark - Can I make another request? How about the distance from the strut face (that holds the driveshaft) to the face of the prop. How much driveshaft is there showing between the front edge of the prop and that strut? I guess it should be no longer than the width of the shaft is, so ~ 1-1/8". I bet i have a solid 2.5" of shaft showing.

Just got off the phone with both Nettles and Acme and they are both telling me "no way" - thinking that when my driveshaft was replaced the dealer put one on that is too long and I just never noticed. Got some homework to do it looks like - urgh.

Todd at Acme also explained the vibration or growl that I could experience - said if there is less than 3/4" between the prop and rudder I may get it around 2k rpm. Wonder if that is the "growl" others have talked about with the 1433 or whatever it was.

The growl I experienced was with the OJ 466 (14.25x14), known issue with a LSV.

Crap - just talked to SC's tech line too. Technically only need enough space between the strut/prop for a prop puller to reach. Up to the prop diameter that Acme recommends as the max.

Now when I get home I get to measure the driveshaft and see if I even have the right one, which is becoming seriously doubtful the more I learn. Why is it the simple little things morph into bigger, time consuming, expensive things...

Did you keep your old shaft? The shafts are model and year specific. how much clearance did you have with your old prop?

No - dealer did all the work. I plan to review the paperwork today and see if I can find the part number they used or any description from the repair. When I talked to the SC tech he gave me the length and part number but said it isn't stamped on the shaft anywhere so I need to measure. Seems to me that it's about 1.5-2" too long though.

Hopefully the dealer will play ball with me on this one. If not I'm wondering if I should replace it myself. Tempted do a test drive as is and see how it goes. Just don't want to make a several hundred dollar mistake.

We got different boats bro but honestly i wouldnt mess with it in the water till your 100% confident.

I just looked at mine and i got 3 or 4 inches from prop to rudder.

I only have 1 to 1.5 inches from back of the prop to the shaft strut. I think you got the wrong shaft and i id be more worried about if your prop flexes under initial load it would hit the rudder.

you could probably pull the shaft and take it to a machine shop for cheaper then buying a new one just a thought.

That sucks, Berg. Hopefully, the dealer will own up to it and put in the right shaft and not charge you. It seems pretty obvious that they put in one that is too long.

So now the confusion sets in. Just measured the shaft. SC said it should be 49". I've got 39" outside the boat and roughly 10" in the bilge to where it connects to the tranny. Seems right on paper, just not in practice. Why... is it possible I've got some mutant albatross here?

Also just measured my old OJ 13.7x17.5 and it is within about 1/8" of the same fit as the 1847. So I guess it's possible it wasn't a problem until I went and made it a problem. Just doesn't seem right, doesn't feel right.

If you still got the old prop you ran last year, and if you ran this shaft with your old prop last year and no issues then maybe its really not an issue at all. Other wise if you havnt run the boat since the new prop i would at least call AWS and ask them what htye honestly think.

Thanks for the help fellas. Dropped off at the dealer this morning without a glitch except for the steady rain... :sad:

Hopefully they will still be able to turn it around quickly so the old MobV doesn't have to sit out in this weather longer than necessary. My cover acts more like a sponge rather than water resistant.

Hope they take care of this for you. You reminded me I need to send my bent shaft down to Tampa to get it straightened. It'll be nice having a spare shaft, flange, strut and prop all ready to go (whispering:) just in case.

Ouch, look at my knees in that pic. All rubbed raw like Dusty's Mom's at a frat party. From kneeling on the carpet reaching around the v-drive to get the bolts out of the collar. I hate nylock nuts. That was a PITA to change out but with some good help from the boys we got her done. The most frustrating part was I could not figure out why I still had a vibration with the new shaft. Turned out my "repaired" prop was not right. Switched to my original prop and it was smooth as butter. Now that was some RELIEF! And, don't worry. I put the boys in the lawn chairs to work moving the engine when we did the realignment. Then I drank some serious suds.

It was an early morning thing that took way longer than expected because the bolts required for the flange were not the same length with the aftermarket collar and shaft. I had to run to Lowes in town about 40 min. each way. And, because I was going to town I had to get beer, buns, mustard, beer, ketchup, beer, pancake mix, beer, tequila, napkins, beer, etc. but definitely did not have to get chips.

Got a call from the shop - boat could be done today using the shaft packing. Or for a little $ and .5 hour of shop time on my dime they will put in dripless for me. Easy since they already have it pulled apart. However it will be sometime next week before it's done. (not a huge concern since our upcoming forecast sucks)

Is it worth it to go dripless? I've only read up a little on it.

Only if you like having a dry bilge instead of water slopin around. A dry bilge will let you know if you have any water or oil leaks. tough to tell with a wet bilge

An extra week, an upgrade to a dripless seal, and a motor realignment and the boat is finally back home and looks right.

After a brief, uh let's just call it "debate", there was no charge for anything except the dripless seal and labor on that.

Not too much really - just a brief chat followed by your average poker face stare down. Service Manager at AWS is a cool guy. I couldn't really hammer on him for a screw up the previous svc mgr had done before his time that he inherited. He understood where I was coming from, plus losing the boat for 2 weeks to sit at the shop, and made it right.

I'm dying to see how much more pull there is and how smooth it is now.
