Camera for the boat...

I've seen lots of photos and they have been taken with lots of different cameras like phones, gopros, and point-and-shoots. It seems that they all have reasons like convenience, video, waterproof, burst mode, etc. I was considering getting a waterproof Canon but now I'm not sure what I want.

What is everyone using?

These two were taken with a playsport. The surf pic was taken when the boat was coming back to get me. Pretty sure KG has a pic or two from actually surfing and holding it. Snapping a pic wasn't easy.

We have the Kodak Playsport too. Really a nice camera for the money. We tie a key floater to it when the kids have it. Takes great photos and video.

My first playsport was making its way around Brostock when it got dropped in the water ... Devastating since it had some goods footage.

I ordered the next one with the floating arm band.

I am looking for something that I can give to anyone and have them take burst pictures while wakeboarding and then be waterproof for photos outside the boat. These don't seem to be fast enough. Any other cameras people are using?

David what was the frame per second on your Sony? That burst mode was perfect. I dont think a waterproof camera will have that speed but would like to compare.

bhowell, sounds like to me you might be happier with 2 cameras.

I picked up the Playsport to have a simple waterproof camcorder and one that can take the outside the boat pics. We use a DSLR in the boat alot of the time.

They have both and a pile of iPhones... (rode with him last weekend)

The Sony would take around 12 pictures in 2 seconds. It would show the whole trick progression.

the sony does either 10 pictures a second up to 10 pictures or 2 pictures a second for up to 10 pictures

I have a Sony TX-10. It's really same, and waterproof down to 16'. It has a burst mode, and a slow mo mode. As well, it takes 1080 movies with ability to take photo while recording (at 5 mp I think). The photos are excellent, especially low light photos. It's probably the best low light camera I have had or seen. The video is excellent.

Here are the things I don't like: You have to be careful with your hand so that you don't get it in the picture. Battery life could be longer, but I have 2 batteries, a little slow on video record start up.

I have taken this to the beach, the lake, the river and it has worked flawlessly. I was really nervous snorkeling with it, but no water (even salt water) issues.

I read up on this camera and it looks perfect on the specifications / features but I got concerned reading the Amazon reviews. Multiple reviewers had the waterproof seals fail (Sony won't fix under warranty). The long start up time and short battery life also seemed to be recurring complaints. Even with these shortcomings, this camera is my favorite so far but not willing to pull the trigger on it yet.

We have a Sanyo Xacti waterproof (to 10 feet or some such) for basic video & photos. I will be using a Drift HD170 with a tower camera mount this year once I get it set up. There Drift HD170 is not waterproof but it will be up top. It has a wireless RF remote that I have strapped to the steering wheel to make it easier on the wife to stop/start recording.

The battery life isn't that bad, but the small camera body and an on/off button on the top lead to a lot of camera turn ons when you don't want to. A lot of that has to do with the case I use.

No issues with the seals, but I have really had good luck with Sony products.

The Sanyo? Mine is only a 8MB and doesn't have a burst mode. It's like a 2008 camera I think, old school pistol grip kinda looking thing, view screen pivots out to the side... it does ok, nothing spectacular.

Great camera, throw some L glass on it and you're set. My Canon SLR gear only goes in the boat when it is a sight seeing cruise.

Go water-proof camera is all you really need. They do vid's and usually 10-15 megapix's. After our last Supra/Texoma blury group picture, yes my wife was drinking and floating on a raft (very scary for me) with our to expensive and too hard to use camera thats NOT water-proof. I just got a nice cannon I think $350ish, water-proof, simple to use 1-click, takes great under water pic's and great outside shots. No worring anymore. lol
