1998 Moomba Outback Speed

I just bought a 1998 Moomba Outback with a 300 hp 350 cu in. carburated engine. I don't know the prop pitch but it runs welll except for a hesistation during take off. Probably needs a carb kit but what I'm wondering is approx. top speed. With a couple of people I can only run about 35 mph. Is this about normal for this setup?

It really all depends on prop pitch, that could be very normal if you have anything less than a 13x13 prop, like 13x12 or even 11

My 99 outback did 44- 45mph at ~4500 rpms with the stock prop.

My 98 goes about 42 with no hesitation.

What are your RPMs at WOT? You may be able to find the prop dimensions on the prop itself, look for two sets of numbers like mentioned above 13 x 13, 14 x 14.5, 13 x 11, etc.

My 2000 Outback LS would run 45 with the stock OJ 13x13. There was definitely no hesitation. Guy that owned it before me used to build racing motorcycles. Have no idea what he did to the boat but it was wicked fast.

Yeah, what others have said. 35 is way too slow IMO though. Do you have massive acceleration (low pitched prop?) I have the stock 13x13 prop and although I'm not even sure what my max speed is, I'm pretty sure its above 42... Course I also have 30 more ponies too.. and EFI. Nonethe less, that boat should get up to 42-45 no problem. Could need carb work, could be a prop issue.

If this speed measurement is based only on what the speedometer says, it may just be the speedometer is off. Especially if your boat is running well, getting maximum RPM out of the engine. Need to compare with a gps, or some other good known measurement, such as the stop watch method or another boat.
