While someone on here told me about using a zip lock bag over the filter while removing it trick, yesterday I perfected it.
I ran the boat and then dropped the oil hose out the bottom and left it overnight to drain. This allowed most of the oil to go out and for the engine to cool down. When I removed the filter, I covered it as always with zip lock bag. Since it had cooled overnight, I had almost no oil leaking from around the filter. It was the cleanest filter change I had ever done.
So, if you have time, let the engine/oil cool before removing the filter. Of course, I know others use different methods to remove the oil.
