I saw another Portland thread I didn't want to hi-jack, so I started my own ;) I'm coming to Portland, OR, for some training.

I'll be flying in May 13th, having that evening and all day Monday the 14th to do whatever I want.

I'll also have friday afternoon (May 18th), and all day Sat. (19th) to do whatever I want. I'll have a rental car the whole time too.

I've never been west of KS, so I'm wanting to do some good sightseeing, and would love to meet any of y'all that are around that area. I definitely want to make it to the coast area on day or afternoon.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Ryan

Hey Ryan - I'll give you some ideas and plan to meet up with you for a beer!

Depending on the site seeing you want to do there's a lot of options:
Mt. St. Helens volcano (a few hours north of Portland)
Multnomah Falls (east of Portland a half hour or so)
Downtown Portland waterfront
OMSI - Oregon Museum of Science & Industry - they rotate a lot of different cool exhibits.
Lots of micro breweries scattered all over
Portland Spirit river cruise - booze/food and a tour up the river on a big cruiser.
Willamette River jetboat tours - exactly what it sounds like. Departs from downtown Portland near OMSI.
Mt Hood - Timblerline lodge is probably the best bet in May. An hour or so away from downtown.
Active Water Sports - biggest Moomba/Supra/Malibu/Ski Nautique/Axis, etc. dealer around in our area. (Oregon City - south of Portland)

Uh, I'm sure I'm missing lots of things.

At the coast Seaside is a popular spot. Lots of arcades, shops, rides, and the historic statue at the turnaround that marks the end of Lewis & Clark's expedition west. Down further south around Newport and Lincoln City there is some whale watching along with the typical beach stuff. Also a few different casinos.

I'd suggest hitting the water but who knows with the weather and I'm typically not dewinterized by then.

Sweet. We'll keep an eye on the weather, and pack my shorts regardless. ;)

Thanks for all the info Berg. I appreciate it, and look forward to meeting you! I'll post back up after I've done a little research on what you posted. I"m pretty stoked about it!

Willamette River jetboat tours...Mt Hood - Timblerline lodge...Active Water Sports

Not my trip, but wish it was. That's what I'd hit up. All I've seen is the airport. Have a great time, rc!

RC - never heard of the zip line place but now I wanna go too! As for the grotto, I'd suggest going at Christmas time when it's all lit up and lots of programs going on. Otherwise probably a yawner.

Monday is out for me fellas - Cub Scout meetings every Monday evening.

Have any of you ever taken the brewcycle? One of my NCAA tornament buddies found this site and figured we all could use the exercise. This could be an interesting trip.

Heard of it - have friends at work who have done it - never have myself. The said that it's fun at first, then starts to feel like work. But hey, it's only a couple hours!

I think a lot of the highlights are covered. When I get employees out this way, they usually head to Seaside or Cannon Beach so they can see the Pacific Coast. If you head to Cannon Beach (Haystack Rock), stop off at Camp 18 along the way there (mile marker 18 -- an old logging camp) for some breakfast or lunch.

Aside from that, there are many good wineries in the Portland, South West Washington area that you can check out. Multnomah Falls is another good stop. You could definitely do the Falls and Cannon Beach in a day and still have some time to burn.

Great trip to Portland for the basketball tournament. A lot more microbrew pubs than I ever expected and I learned the first hour I got there on Wednesday night that the alcohol content of those micros are much higher than the usual beers. I was not a good designated driver that night. Leaving town today, we stopped at Thien Hong and they have the best salt & pepper squid around.

I'm still out for Monday dude and Mother's Day is Sunday. You have any other open time while you're here?

Weather is looking pretty decent if you do find a lake/river buddy!

I'll take you out. I'll keep my fingers crossed that we don't have rain.

I hope you don't mind that I have 2 small kids that would be along for the ride.

I can be done with work just after lunch. We have daylight until about 8:30 pm. Since I only have the afternoon/evening to burn I would have to stick to the local Willamette River ramp. 10th street exit off the 205 in West Linn, OR.

I'll pm my phone #.

Or If we need to use another body of water that is cool with me in case others can't make it over to West Linn (10-15) mins outside of Portland.

I can only handle 2. :)

I was thinking that we could also take a ride downtown. Portland is best from the water.

Hey RC im still looking forward to meeting up with you. I just brought the boat home today from installing my new ballast. Its pretty sick. I plan to take it out Sunday for its first dip, run threw everything make sure its working properly.

I will tell you bring a Wetsuit man. Best temps you will see in the water is 55.
I'm off Monday and can hit the lake at anytime. Boone is always welcome if he wants to make the trip over to Hagg. I wont take my boat to the rivers till at least July.

Boone, you got stones man, no way i would be in the Willy this time a year, snow run off, debris, i can count on both hands the amount of boating accidents from underwater debris this time a year.

I hear ya man, not trying to steel your thunder at all bro. I have no problem driving to your side of town for boating. I actually never take my boat to the Willy. I go with Al Cab all the time in his boat. Claudia hates the river like a bad hair day. She refuses to go there with our boat lol. I dont care but im not going to mess with the mrs on this one.

hahahaha That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! Lol.

As for location, I really don't care. I think I'll do my Mount hood drive Monday morning then and meet up with y'all on Monday afternoon? Just gotta figure out where? I'm going to try to get the OK from teh doc today to ge tin the water even next Monday, as I still have stiches from the screw being removed. I might be able to surf, but that'll be about it. I am just as much into a boat ride and or drive as I am getting in the water. I just like being out on boats!!! Esp. in a new lake I'm not familiar with in SOMEONE ELSE'S boat. Lol.

I get in around 12:30 Sunday. Not sure how beat I'll be; going to try and sleep some on the plane. Looks to be a 1.5 hour flight from here to Chicago, then about 4.5 hours to OR.

The Mt. Hood drive I want to do looks to be about 4-5 hours with a little hiking. You have to remember that I'm an East Coaster, so I'll be up by 4 AM Pacific at the absolute latest Monday morning. Lol.

What a great time, and a great bunch of guys (and families). I put some pics up on the May pictures album, and I"ll post these vids there in a minute too. Please take it easy on me, as it is my FIRST time ever doing any video editting, and I used the standard Microsoft program on my computer... It literally took me 4 days just to upload these to youtube!
