Oil!?!?

Atlanta marine indicated i have to use penzoil marine 20w50. she said i cant use regular mobile one oil because its not formulated the same as marine oil. Is this true? I need to do an oil change today and i cant find the marine oil anywhere and Atlanta marine is an hour and a half away.

Wake, it is best to use Marine Oil, as they put additives in Marine oil that provide extra corrosion protection due to the moist environment. Also, I believe they are specially formulated for the way boat engines are used - higher revving.

I think, in a pinch, you can use normal oil, but I wouldn't trust that oil for long. It will protect your engine, but how well and for how long I can't say.

Just got our Rotella T 15W-40 for $13 and change/gallon from Wallyworld

I read up a lot on the forums and it seems like a lot of people use it.

I use 15W40 Penzoil from Advance Auto Parts. Has all the same codes on the back that is listed in the owners manual. 650 hrs and not a problem so far

Nothing but the cheapest for me. My last boat was 25 years old when I sold it and no one asked about what oil I used and I'm glad they didn't ask for the service history either.

Yup, agree with above. I use the Rotella or the Delvac one. All the oils today are fantastic.

Called indmar when I did our first oil change and he said rotella 15-40 was a good oil to use.

I use 15w40 Rotella. I think using the correct weight and changing the oil at regular intervals is most important. I'm with Kane all oils have to meet the latest wear ratings which they improve every year or two.

Even they don't seem to be able to clearly define the difference.

Rust preventers???? I've never seen metal parts that were soaked in oil (any kind of oil) rust.

More specifically, your owner's manual tells you the minimun oil rating of the oil to use. As long as you meet that, you should use any oil that you like. Change your oil and filter at recommended intervals and you should never have an oil related problem.

AmzOil 15w40 here. i run full synthetic in every thing i own :-)

Engine Oil
The engine crankcase oil should be selected to deliver the
highest performance for your operating conditions and climate.
In general, engine oils with lower viscosity ratings are used when
outdoor temperature remains low. Oils with higher viscosity are
used when outdoor temperature is warmer and when higher
performance is expected from the engine.
Indmar recommends 15W-40 Pennzoil Marine in their engines.
If not available, use a 15W40 motor oil with an A.P.I. classification
rating of SL/SJ/CI4/CH4/CG4 or equivalent. Synthetic oils are
not recommended until after the engine has been run for 100
hours.
Refer to Engine Manual for more information. For filter
and capacity information, see the Engine Data table in this
manual.

WOW guess i never paid much attention to this item. I always used syn car type oil in my engine.

Now i can use my diesel oil.

Good part is its 15w40 and since i only need 15 of the 16qts, now when the boat needs an oil change i can use those extra quarts haha.

I only run full syn in my truck as well, claudias car is 50/50

be careful switching back and forth. I was told years ago(don't know if it's true or not) that once you switch to synth, don't go back. the engine metals become used to the synth and if you go back, the parts won't lube correctly.

Myth! You can change oil back and forth every time, nothing will be affected. A bigger issue is using the incorrect weight oil for your application.

Diesel oil has the equavilant requirements recommended in the manual. Like others have mentioned the rotella is good stuff...I have been running the motorcraft diesel oil for years...

Yes this is the same as i have always herd that once you go syn your shouldnt go back to reg oil. My diesel runs full syn and i used full syn in the boat last year, so i will stay with full syn no matter what.

Claudia car we only run 50/50 because i have no intentions on keeping it much longer then 3 or 4 years

Shes been hinting to a diesel for her next car, the Tourag but at 65K i said i doubt it, it will have to be used and under 40 LOL
