Thought I'd start this thread instead of hi-jack mmandley's Serenity thread. I'm in the process of buying the goodies for my daily driver and wanted to see how many might be doing the same (or already running some of it) and can chime in with opinions.

Running PPE now and thinking of switching to EFI Live Autocal DSP5 with Idaho Rob tunes. KG - do you have the DSP5 switch and what's ur opinion on on-the-fly switching? Who does ur tuning? I was going to install it myself and didn't know how difficult or easy it is going to be?

I've got 4" cat-back exhaust and I'm going to replace my downpipe with new flo-pro and figure since i'm at it I'll pull the 4" out and get rid of the cat and go 5" all the way. Heard the downpipe can be a bitch with the heatshield in the way?

TransgoJr. Kit for the Allison sounds like a must for higher tunes. Don't suppose the lift helps either. Gonna have a shop do this one as I don't feel comfortable tying into the tranny.

Trans cooler lines on the LBZ are a nuisance and leak. Factory lines are chit and been replaced under warranty once already. Gonna buy new lines and replace them myself. Heard their a pain and have to take the whole front end apart.

Other items:
Shim kit
Air bags (anybody have pics of the guage and controls installed in cab?)
FASS or ADII fuel system
Resonator cap
PCV re-route
S&B intake

Awwww swweeeett ...

I actually just have a 2 switch, I went the cheaper route bc I didn't see a need for stock tune or 2 tow tunes. I was also worried I'd break something with a hot tune. Kinda wish I had the 150+ tune now, though. Anyways, I have a tow tune (50+) and a daily drive (90+) from nick at duramaxtuner.com. On the fly switching seems fine to me, I've never used anything else so nothing to compare it to. I am likely one of the least capable on this forum at installing things and I swapped my ECM's and wired the toggle switch with limited issues (reading their diagram was kind of a pain). The location isn't too bad (had to pull battery and maybe something else) on mine but not sure on the LBZ.

I've heard the same on the downpipe, that it can be a PITA. I installed a 5" turbo back (really downpipe back) straight pipe from flo-pro. I ended up painting the tip black with high heat spray paint.

I went back and forth on the transgo jr. but it's cheap and I'm still considering picking it up. I was told with the 90+ tune I'll be fine with the stock tranny. The transgo jr. will let you play with the 150+ tune safely from the way I understand it. I def agree on having someone install that.

Other thoughts:

I was looking at the S&B as well but I think I've switched to Bill's Custom Intake (just google it). It uses an S&B filter but replaces the plastic intake with a metal one for more turbo sound.
The PCV re-route: I still don't understand what this is and I haven't done it.
Resonator cap isn't a bad idea but not sure you really yield anything from what I've read, at least on the LMM.
The ADII is on my list of things I'd like to do.
I put air bags in mine but I didn't do a compressor. I usually have a portable one on me so I just ran the lines out the back of the truck and do it that way. If money isn't that big of an issue, on board compressor would be nice. I think you are talking around $300 for on board air? It does get a little old trying to get them level while the boats sitting behind you waiting to go.

Only other things that you didn't mention that I can think of is the EGR blockplate and I'm running the CTS for gauges.

I think this thread is going to need some pics :)

Oh, and we might have a new dmax member tomorrow?

Have you guys looked into H&S tuners? This is what im running and its shift on the fly works realyl nice. Its bit pricy and only lets you see 4 items at a time.

http://www.hsperformance.com/

IDK if your PCV mod is the same as the ones we do on the Fords but basically its routing it under the truck so its not dumping that raw oil right into your turbo. I havnt done mine yet but im planning on it soon.

As for the Air guage i can grab a pic of mine when i get a chance. I got the air bags, and on board compressor just need to install them.

I check out the site. NOW I'm undecided again?? AEM and aFe also makes an aluminum intake so really still trying to make my mind up on this one.

PCV reroute helps keep the oily soot and residue out of the intake

resonator cap is "just because" I'll be there and help with the turbo whine :)
pretty useless other than that I think?

EGR blocker - i've had it for a couple years and didn't do it since truck was under warranty. I need to put it in but waiting till I tear into everything else. Heard the back bolts are a PITA as well.

Got Autometer Pyro and Boost on the pillar!

Definitely need to pretty the thread up with some pics soon!! I need to get to spending some $$ and go to work on it.

Mike, I think h&s is a more popular brand for pstroke and Cummins. I know my buddy went black maxx on his Cummins cause it was the solid go to. Recently rode in a local diesel shops F450 6.4 and he was running Black maxx too and said it was the go to. I'm assuming that's why you got it as well. well anyways, efi live is that for the dmax. You write your own custom tunes, change whenever you want, with software. Now instead of selling the software (comparable price too black maxx), shops are selling ecm's that they tuned with the software. just like downloading a tune on h&s. They sell ecm's with 5 tunes or 2 tunes for a cheaper price and for those that wouldn't know how to use the software, like myself.

Viking, I have seen the most positive reviews on bills custom intake. That and s&b.

That's a sharp looking truck! Let's see a pic of the pillar!

11outback,
did you have to buy spacers to get the air bags tucked up under the frame due to the lift and if so, where'd you find em?
Are the air bags PAC Brakes or Firestone (or some other brand)? Thanks. Shopping list you know :)

11 Outback V
02-22-2012, 05:58 AM
They were Firestone air bags. I didnt use a spacer, just ordered the size to fit the application. Had a built in compressor and air tank to run them, a train horn and an aux hose connection.

Has anyone installed cold air intake? I can't come to any sort of conclusion on whether or not there is going to be signficant increase in turbo sound and if I'm going to have to re-calibrate my MAF.

I was looking at Bill's Custom Intake so I can get the metal intake tube bc from my understanding it will be louder than the lastic S&B? Also, I emailed them and they acted like I would not need to re-calibrate the MAF on the 4.5" and but MAY need to on the 5". However, I read that when you change sizes from OEM you need to re-calibrate?

I'm working in circles .. anyone with any insight? I want more turbo noise and the truck to run strong.

How about I just directly deposit my pay check to your account, so I'll need all of your account information, including SSN, etc...

Wishful thinking...

It's my understanding you're going to have to recal if you want a 5" intake. I would say 4.5" is close and if it were me I'd still recal. If you have EFI live you should be able to find info online to calibrate it. Or just have a shop do it for you if you don't have EFI live or want to mess with tables and mapping.

Thats my .02 and the only $ you'll be getting ;)

KG's Supra24
02-28-2012, 03:25 PM
Yea, Bill's Custom Intake mentioned I wouldn't have to recal with a 4.5" but I'm with you, I feel like I should recal either way. I have a tuned ECM but not the EFI live software so I would need to have a shop do it. I guess I need to get with a local shop or the people I got the ECM from before making my decision.

mmandley
02-28-2012, 10:43 PM
I got the S&B CAI

Yes you will need to Recal the MAF sensor, but if you running tunes then these should be built into the tune as part of the upgrades done to the truck. You have to Recal due to your going to be moving a lot more air, and it needs these reading to be correct to help adjust fuel ratios. The good about a Diesel is it doesnt care if you run it Lean, you just dont get the power out of it. It doesnt care if you run it rich, it just heats your turbo up. Gotta love Diesel LOL

KG.....after talking to a few outfits I found that a CAI is not worth the money until you get into the major mods. That is at least for my LBZ. I had more than one shop (reputable across the nation) tell me to keep the stock airbox and if anything do the PPE mod. They certainly sell me one if I wanted but i appreciated the straight talk from them. I think the LB7 benefits from the CAI's. Not sure if it's the same on the LMM.
I'm gonna save my money for the other goodies I want.

Good looking truck but honestly a little over priced. I paid less then that for my 08 and same milage, plus 24 month 100K warrenty free.

Also the F350s come with more interior space.
Yea i know im partial to Fords but thats because i grew up in the Blue Oval family lol.

If you do get serious on looking at them dont hesitate to give me a ring bro, even though im partial to Fords i know the ins and outs of most Diesels and be prepared to drop 1 to 1500 into any one you buy to get a tuner and prolly an exhaust upgrade unless you like big trucks with crappy milage lol.

I checked the site out and there is definetly alot there. The wife and I decided we want to get a diesel to take some of the wear and tear out away from our 08 Tahoe when towing the boat. Also later this year or possibly next year we would like to get a fifth wheel (no longer than a 32 footer) and start taking our kids across country. Also looking at using the fifth wheel at some of our local lakes that have campgrounds. Trying to figure out what year diesel to avoid and how many miles are too many. We've been looking at the 05-10 year range. Mike mentioned the 05-06 I might want to avoid though. So that might narrow it down to the 07-10 range :) What type of upgrades would be suggested at first? Type of hitch for fifth wheel? Is the 2500HD going to be able to handle what I am looking at doing? So are some of my questions off the top of my head but trust me I have plenty of more....hahaha.

If i was in your situation the first thing i would be looking at is how heavy is the 5th wheel im thinking of buying?
How do i want the truck to ride when the 5th wheel is attached? As close to factory or IDK what evers cheapest.

You can buy used 5th wheel hitches all day long but they are normaly the steel ones with no adjustment. When i was pulling RV trailers last year i was thinking i might go the 5th wheel route as theres more trailers in that market to haul but i didnt want to cut holes in the bed of the truck to mount it. One nice thing i found was if you plan to haul a lot look into the air ride style 5th wheel hitches. It uses air bags to absorb a lot of the shock the 5th has and not transfer that into the truck.

Also remember if you mount a 5th wheel in the truck and tow with it, you can pretty much kiss most of your trade in value good bye. This is because most people dont want to buy a truck that has been towing a bunch of 5th wheels around. Even though the truck is designed for this it has to do with this simple question < Do you want to pay top dollar for a truck you know has been hauling heavy loads around and not know the type of driver hauling those loads? >

As for the truck if you planning on pulling a 5th wheel you should use a Long bed to allow clearence when turning and backing up. They now make sliding 5th wheel setups for short bed trucks but a long bed is still best IMO due to the extra room and you will prolly want to carry some things in the bed of the truck, or you might want to add an auxilary tank to the bed to get more miles between fill ups.

Also for me if im going to be pulling a 5th wheel i prefer to have a 1 Ton truck. I dont know enough about the Chevy line to know for sure but i think there set up like Ford and Dodge, 2500 = 3/4 ton and 3500 = 1 ton.

One of the first upgrades i would also get are air bags on the rear of the truck, nothing bothers me ore then seeing someone towing and the truck is dragging arse and got the headlights shooting the tops of trees.

We have always tossed the idea of getting a camper and seeing the counrty side and bringing the boat. For this we think an Inbed camper would be best. Then we can camp and boat in the same trips. They have a lot of really nice bed campers out now with slide outs and there pretty big.

Back to the rig, for milage its really how the truck is taken care of, a 3/4 and 1 ton truck is designed to last much longer then a 1/2 ton. Everything about them is bigger, and along those lines so is maintenance. Be prepared to spend some money when it needs oil changes, brakes, and other maintenance services.

If it were me i prefer my trucks to have 50 to 75K on them less is always better but 50 to 75K seems to be a decent milage to get the cost down on them, and work out the bugs they might have had. Its still low enough milage to start your maintenance and make sure it lasts a long time.

Is there a reason yuo want 5th wheel over bumper pull? You can find 30ft hitch style trailers for pretty cheap with hardly any use in them. I was pulling these last year and brand new they were only 20K pretty well optioned. The only thing you normally need then is a weight distrubution hitch like the one i have and they run you about 250 for a good one. You will still want air bags to help level the truck out.

The body style change was mid year 2007. 2007.5 to 2010 is the LMM motor and just about every mod there is is out for that motor.

If you were to spend hours going through the forum you would find that the following is the typical upgrade path:

1. Buy a tuner. EFI Live is the go to. If you aren't saavy then they sell pretuned ECM's that have known and trusted safe tunes. The daily drive tunes are typically 90 to 100 hp over stock and those are considered stock tranny safe. Approximately $400 for pretuned ECM if you send your stock back.

2. The tune will most likely delete the DPF and turn off the EGR cooler. Therefore, next step is to buy new exhaust to get the DPF hardware out of the way. Also buy an EGR block plate. New Exhaust could range from $300 to upwards of $600. EGR blockplate is $15.

3. Most guys usually pick up a gauge, either digital or analog gauges to monitor a couple temps. I'm not sure of the cost on analog gauges but digital run $200 to $300 I believe. The Edge Insight is a popular digital gauge. The dash mount kit is approx $40.

Those are what I'd call the first level of duramax mods. Next level would be:

4. Cold air intake. The stocker supplies plenty of air for 500hp but the new intake gives you the sweet turbo sound. Approx $300

5. Transgo Jr. transmission mod. This changes out some hardware on the allison and allows for 150 hp over stock (instead of 100) safely. I believe the parts cost is about $90.

6. Lift pump. Duramax can benefit from added fuel flow and the lift pump provides it. Airdog II is a popular choice. Approx $700.

That is what I have taken from the forum. There are of course other mods but I believe those are the most popular.

I bought my truck with 150,000 miles and did mods 1-3 shortly after buying the truck. It made the truck come alive over the stock setup and it can be fun to drive. I have clocked a 0-60 at 6.0 with 22" wheels and 33" tires. I've also surprised a few cars when they try to mess with me on the interstate.

Lifts, tires, etc is of course another discussion. However, if you are considering pulling a 5th wheel you will want to stay close to stock.

I'll do another thread for non-mod responses.

I agree with everything Mmandley mentioned above.

I bought a fairly high mileage truck at 150,000. With that being said it had never been tuned and I was comfortable with the shape it was in. It all comes down to maintenance and condition like he mentioned. Diesel will run a LONG time if properly taken care of.

The factory setup comes with a little bit of rake (front sits lower than back). When I hooked my boat up it set about level. I eneded up leveling my truck so the front sits about level with the back under daily driving conditions. I had to add the airbags in the rear in order to avoid the arse drag Mike mentioned. I paid approximately $300 installed. I have to manually fill the airbags through some stems that come out of the rear bumper. I usually carry a portable air pump. For on board air compressor, expect to pay an addidtional $300.

I agree that a 5th wheel pushes you towards a long bed truck. The short bed can handle a fifth wheel with the right hitch but long bed is really ideal.

I believe it's the LB7 that had injector issues. Those were 01-04.5. The LLY fixed that and LBZ was before body style change and before extra emissions crap. You don't have to worry about the DPF system of the LMM and later. The LBZ Duramax is one of the most sought after setups if you like the older body style. I searched and searched till i found one with low miles. Anything under 50K miles is hard to find and just getting broke in - but they are out there :)

FASS or Airdog II lift pump is a must have upgrade imo. I should have done one earlier but getting to it now.
As others have stated, exhaust and tunes are very popular. Lift pump and exhaust and you can run them mostly stock forever. Problem with me is, I NEVER run anything stock :)

Once you get into the tunes, the gauges become more important, primarily Pyrometer so you can monitor EGTs.

One of the best canned tunes out there is the PPE xcellerator. EFI is a step above that and allows for more specific tunes and more flexibility. I'm getting rid of my PPE in favor of EFI for that reason. After a 6in lift, 35's, and other mods the PPE just won't take all into account. Stock the PPE was just fine. But an EFI V2 will allow me to tune my modified duramax AND my 05 yukon gasser.

You can do as much to them as you have the time & money.

^ agreed lbz is most sought after but I don't believe any of them had major issues.

Viking, can you explain to me a little more why the lift pump is so important? Ive read that but don't completely understand. I haven't read alot, though. At $600+, i've hesitated on making that mod.

They didn't - that's why they are so popular. And the main reason I searched to find one of the 07.5 classics. I wasn't into the new body style 2 years ago. But I will admit that they have grown on me and I'm a fan now :)

From what I understand The Duramax's don't have a factory lift pump. The injectors can starve for fuel, especially at startup or under demand for more fuel (as in the case of running higher performance tunes). The ADII or FASS systems can prolong the life if the injectors, and they double as a filtration/water separator. GOOD Clean FUEL with no contaminants, air, or water provided to the injectors on demand, all the time. It is pricey, but cheap compared to replacing injectors.

Made some progress this weekend. Here is an sneak preview awesome quality cell phone pic!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/dusty2221/20120303_193949.jpg

This Cognito kit is extremely well built. Just for a comparison, I'm holding the factory tie rod and the Cognito HD Tie Rod is on the truck. The pic does it no justice, the new tie rod is easily 2-3x the size of the old. After looking at the new you feel like the old can be bent over your knee.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/dusty2221/20120304_133838.jpg

One more, this is the Non torsion bar drop kit. Those brackets mounted on top of the lower control arm are how they accomplish the NTBD. The bracket has a mandrel that goes into the factory lca hole for the torsion bar, then that huge as bracket bolts in and moves them up keeping the rear mounts tucked up under the frame.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/dusty2221/20120304_142544.jpg

There was a slight shipping delay on my shocks and rear block kit, but Fed Ex shows it to be on the truck for delivery today. I'm hoping it comes by 1:00 and I can bolt outta here early and get it all wrapped up and aligned tonight!

why the lift pump is so important? Ive read that but don't completely understand.

Also, the lift pump will provide a positive pressure the Cp3 pump. This helps relive stress on the Cp3 pump as it is not working as hard to pull fuel to it. You now have a lift pump pushing the fuel to the cp3.

Dusty..........Looking good!

@Mandley and KG....Thanks for all the info. It gives me a starting point on what to look at as well as the mods. As far as the short bed vs regular bed when pulling a fifth wheel, how much of a difference is it going to make when turning? I would rather go with a short bed if I can get away with it. I live next to Elkhart, IN which is the RV capital and have spoke with SEVERAL differnent RV dealers and every single one has given me a different sales pitch on what type of truck I can use to pull "their" fifth wheel. Kinda made me laugh though. Anymore insight would be great. Thanks.

Here she is!

List of Updates:
Cognito 4" Non Torsion Bar drop
Heavy Duty Tie Rods
Heavy Duty Sway Bar end links
Pitman Arm Brace
Idler Arm Brace
2.5" rear blocks
Bilstein 5100's all the way around
20x9 BMF Sotas in Stealth Black

Have a few other small things I'd like to do before I call this part completely done, but nothing major. Gonna go ahead and add the airbags back onto the rear to eliminate sag while pulling, check into a new steering stabilizer since everything else has been replaced, and pick up a .5" spacer for the rear wheels. The front lift incorporated one so the front end is about .5" wider on each side than the rear. I want to get the rear tires our from under the fender a little more and make it match up. I'm also gonna grab a can or 2 of Rubberized undercoating and hit the frame with it so it's black again.

Enjoy!

Already removed all the badges and door bumpers. The parts for an 11 seem to be few and far between due to the new suspension and lug pattern.
Some of you may remember my old truck and this is almost identical. New options that it came with were:
Adjustible pedals
Back up Sensors
And the best, an exhaust brake!!

Mods in the future
8" Lift (n/a)
22" wheels w 38" tires (n/a)
Full Exhaust
H&S
S&B Cold air
Rear Air bags w on board compressor
Train horn
HIDs
Tow mirrors
Paint plastic trim white
Change to 2009 hood
Titan Fuel tank
Lift pump
Full Exile external system (I have some ideas up my sleeve)

Heres the pictures of my rock shield. Mine weight at least 100lbs but i think most of that is my hitch set up. I think you will need a drop hitch due to the longer tongue to attach the center plate to. I have a weight distribution hitch so thats your seeing the ball is attached to. I think i need to get a new hitch ball this year..Thats ones looking a little worn.

I personally like the louvers, they catch water and rocks off the tires and direct most of it under the boat, i do have some rock chips on the trailer on that first cross member, nothing on the boat or anyplace else.

Back side of the setup
http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu114/mmandley/DSC_0736.jpg

Front side, the center is a steel plate, with cut outs to allow the chains to go threw to the hitch, it also had a square metal frame that slides over the reciever tongue and a bolt that holts it tight. This also make sure if it should come lose you dont lose it or it doesnt hit the boat. The 3 louvered panels you can buy seperatly, i replaced 2 of mine because i trimed them 2 louvers to short at one point. There plastic so they are flexable. In the summer when its hot out they will straighten out if bent from storage. The side peaces are just square tubing and bolted together.

I would say that is on the cheap end if the "imperfections" aren't too bad.

I would want to know how long the tuner has been on, what it was run on consistently, and may even have a shop do a lookover.

I can tell you I paid a little more than that for an 07 a year ago and felt like I found THE DEAL. It had 150k and stock.

Personally Newty id stay away from the lifted and big tire trucks, doing that is almost like doubling the milage. Its a huge strain on the trucks drive from weight and angle changes. True they drive well when done right but its still a strain on the truck. Also you have to look at how easy is it going to be for the family to get in the truck?

As for price my buddy bought one with 60ish for 27K so someone selling a truck with 100+ for high 20s just isnt being realistic. There selling it aftermarket cause they cant get enough at the dealer.

I personaly dont like dealing with dealer but i like dealing with vechicles from private parties even less. At least at the dealer you have a lot of legal options if the deal goes south. Also at the dealer if you know your buissness and got all your ducks in a row you can get a screaming deal on a nice truck with a dealer warrenty to back it up.

I wouldn't shy away from a 4" or 6" lifted truck. If it's got much more on it then your asking for trouble (or a pile of $$ in other upgrades). And there is a big difference in effort and wear on a 1/2ton, 3/4, or 1ton. Ideally you could find one that doesn't have a lift and then do it yourself. Then you know it was done right. But I would buy a previously lifted truck if It was done the right way and no shortcuts. Quite frankly, I think the GMC's and Chevy's take on a whole new look when upped 4-6" than most other brands and consider it a must :)

Also, I've bought from dealers and private parties both. If you know what to look for and do your homework, they can both offer great deals. When I flew to Denver to pick up my duramax, I was plenty fine jumping on a flight home if the private party selling wasn't on the up-n-up. I made sure to get a ton of pics, info., and several phone calls before I made the trip. For $2-300 in airline ticket for thousands savings is worth it imo. Completely agree w/ all the above. Fords and dodges look great stock or lifted. Chevys really need a drop or lift to dress them up, which is too bad because GM is my favorite by far.

F250 has 3inch Blocks and no helper spring so it sites about 1.5 inches lower then F350 Stock
F350 has 4inch blocks and a additional spring on the rear so the rear sits up 1.5 inches higher at stock.

As for the front there both Coil over with shocks now. The difference there is Coil tension, but on an F250 you can get the snow plow option which gives you F350 front springs to compensate the extra weight.

On the F350 the have shown you can add up to 500lbs to the front end and get less then 1/2 inch of sag. They did this on Trucks by adding a huge brush guard, with build in winch and such.

Now on older then 05 F250/F350 is when the front end was Springs like the rear and these i think <not positive> were identical to the rears with helper spring and blocks being the difference between F250/F350

Is it a diesel? If so check if it is an LB7 or LLY because the LLY engine came out mid year 2004. I have a friend who does diesel performance and he told my brother to stay away from the LB7 because almost all of them will have the injector problems you hear about sooner or later. The LLY is supposed to be a more reliable engine.

How can I confirm whether it's the newer motor? I went and looked at the truck yesterday and looked at the manufacture date which was 01/04. The salesman swore up and down that it was the new model because they had been producing the truck in 03. So while talking to him I asked him how could you tell whether or not the motor was the LB7 or LLY. He gives me a dumb look stare and says "Well I'm not sure". I asked him if he was so sure how could he tell it was the newer motor and continued giving the dumb stare. I walked away not impressed at all.

I lost some weight over the weekend :)
Did the PCV re-route, EGR block, hacked out the airbox "PPE mod", Downpipe, and 5in DP-back exhaust with cat-delete. Like I've heard, the DP was pretty much a be-otch and had a buddy help. Dont' know if I could have done it without an extra set of hands.

OK OK I finally tooksome pics and uploaded them. Havent done much but did get started. Waiting on Kelderman to get on the ball and send me the info on their kit so I can order it. Kelderman is an air lift that allows you to adjust while driving from 4 to 14 inches of lift!!!!
Wheels are here just waiting on tire selection 37 or 40 ???? Not many options in a 22.

I made a few more updates to mine. Lest weekend I slapped on EFI Live by Idaho Rob, with a DSP5 switch. To go along with it, I blocked my egr and installed a Flo Pro Turbo back 5" System, with the visible portion at the rear painted black. Also added Air lift airbags and 2" Spacers under them on the rear so I can level it when trailers are hooked up. The spacers allow the back to have full travel vs forcing them to stretch and take away travel from the truck's suspension. So far so good, but Airlift is doing $50 mail in rebates for any complete kit, which got me $50 bucks back. I'm considering jumping one more time and grabbing the basic compressor kit so I can get it for another $50 off and have that little convenience feature.

It probably would but GMC has a chrome version of that grill, its standard on the Denali

If you go w the on board compressor, get a tank. Then you can fill up whenever you want with the push of a button, also you can add an accessory hose and do whatever you want, fill tubes, tires or even run light air tools.

Ok all you diesel guys - I'm wondering if a diesel is in my future or not. My primary concern is the short trips that the truck would be subjected to. For me, probably 80% of the time 10 miles to work and 10 miles home is my max, then a lot of short 1-5 mile runs around town to do whatever. Barely enough for the engine to get fully warmed up so I'm thinking that could play havoc with a diesel.

Towing at this point is pretty much June through September only. I wonder if using a block heater year-round (or close to it) would help at all to get up to operating temps faster and be a little better considering the short trips it would see?

The diesels of Now are alot different than years ago. Pretty much drive them like any gasser. Only difference is they have alot more torque and HP than the counterpart. So you need to wait 5 sec. for the glow plugs to warm, big whoop. Get one already :)

You wont hurt the diesel with short trips but you wont help it eigher. You will be driving around in Cold mode all the time and this is a very rich fuel mode to help the engine warm up. Instead of mid teens you will single digits most likley when going to and from work.

I would reccomend each weekend you take it to the highway for a nice 30 miles stretch and open it up and allow it to fully warm up and cycle hot fluids threw all its systems. Other wise you will have a lot of issues down the road. You dont have to beat on a diesel to make her run right for a long time but if you drive it cold all the time you will be doing worse then good to her.

As for mine, i dont haul enough anymore to justify the diesel all the time but when summer comes she more then pays for herself. For me also since im out in the sticks everything is a 30 mile round trip at best so i do see a significant savings in fuel. Remember cost of ownership is more but you get a lot more truck for that as well.

It sounds "BEEFY" :)
The tone is deep and when at idle the exhaust has a HISS - sounds like a jet engine about ready to take off!!
I might change that out to rumble with the new tunes though. Haven't made up my mind. The hiss is kinda cool too.

Got my AD2 installed as well so now I'm working on the DSP5 switch, Airbag kit, and in-cab controls. Hopefully can get the tunes installed over the weekend. We'll see.

Didn't slow down much to take pics or video but I'll try and get some done before month end?

DSP5 Switch
Tunes are by Idaho Rob
1. Optimized stock hiss idle
2. Tow w/turbo brake
3. 75HP mpg
4. 110 performance street
5. 150HP race hiss idle
All I can say is the truck runs Phenomenal. I'm tracking mileage now as I get some time under the new mods and tuning and can report results after end of summer. The 5in exhaust, no cat, and downpipe make the 6.6L sound throaty and beefy. I equally like the Hiss and rumble idle. Just makes me smile :)

Nice man nice. I know on mine if i run the so called Economical tune i get worse milage then running the full on race type tune.

I run the 250HP tune and get the best milage, wlus then i need to tame another Diesel owner i got my 600 ponies and 1100 torque on tap. Just mash the twin turbo peddle

Ah, good 5 hours away. Otherwise I was going to say we should meet up next time you're up to dads.

What are your thoughts on the diesel vs. your new hemi?

I'm still torn on the whole diesel decision. A truck in my budget range is going to be 5+ yrs old. I like the body of the 05-07 fords but won't be jumping on a 6.0 anytime if ever. Don't mind the GMC body over the Chevys but hate the fact that you need a big lift for a fairly minimal tire size upgrade. Dodge sounds like tranny trouble and the quad cabs look too small compared to a regular crew cab.

In the end I think it's still the high volume of short trips that would do me in with a diesel. Gas has gotten so high around here that diesel is almost cheaper than the 87 octane now though.

i would love to have a diesel after driving one but just dont need one for the towing/driving I do. especially for the extra expense

I would rather have a new gas truck vrs a 5+ yr old diesel. No paticular reason other than I like new.

hop into a crewmax ram if you get a chance-plenty of room , the quad cabs are small and was one of the reasons i got rid of the 06 I had.

Worked with a Chrysler tech for a while, he said just give the hemi normal maintence and it should last 200k with no problem, I had heard of the tranny thing too, asked him about that and he said yes with the older trucks but not the newer ones-pretty much bullet proof he said.

IDK about the 2011 3/4 and 1 Ton but i know the 2012 Dodges have an all new trans, a real one built for a 3/4 1 ton workload. I also have liked the new Dodge interior since 2010 changes. I was eyeing the Power Ram Edition they had in the showroom with a Diesel in it last time i was there. That thing was shweet, factory it had a winch on the front and some other goodies. Only thing i didnt care for was the bed seemed a little shallow, and the tires were way to small for the truck. Bed might have just been an illusion of the showroom, tires can be upgraded.

I really do like the new Dodge Diesels and hands down you cant beat the dependability of a Cummins. They are the best engines out there in my mind. I just dont want a new Diesel payment, and i dont want a Dodge unless it has that new trans LOL.

I'd agree with mmandley on the new dodge's. I don't want a new payment either. Not to mention the upgrades and aftermarket goodies that come with it :)

so the trans problems that plagued dodge were primarily for the 2500 and 3500 series trucks?

Yes because people who buy the 2500 and 3500 got the same transmission in your 1500.

SO if you tried to pull 10K with your truck the engine would be lugging really bad and the trans would over heat or break down eventually. This isnt as known of a problem with 1500s because the truck is weighting in at 6K instead of 8k and most 1500 owners arnt trying to pull 10K plus trailers.

Yea i wouldnt worry about it to much but with you travel milage and towing as much as you do, if be looking at getting the trans service every year change the fruild and filter. That will keep the trans happy. Might even look into a transmission cooler also if you dont have one.

i have a cooler and when i bought the truck carfax showed that the trans fluid was changed at 50,000 miles and i just changed it again last thursday with like 78,000 on it. i will probably change it every 30k

viking
06-06-2012, 11:58 PM
Why Dont you sample the fluid annually and the lab tests will indicate when it's time to change and can give advanced notice of minor and major service issues. Fleets have been doing this for years.
I started it after talking to an engineer of Allison for over 20 years and he indicated its not uncommon for someone running transynnd in there allison under normal conditions to go 150000 miles on there tranny before needing a change.
The stealerships want people to come in regularly for stuff they don't need. It's a huge money maker
If you really need a change every 50000 then tests will determine that based on the breakdown.
