I am scheduled to head to Singapore on Thursday to board a drill ship and sail to South Africa. Anyone here ever been to Singapore or South Africa that can give me some advice on things not to do culturally wise. I would hate to get there and do something stupid and get in some kind of trouble.

Singapore was my first international trip for work, back in 1990 I believe. I think in general if you act like a normal well mannered person you should be fine...it's not that restrictive. Don't litter, be courteous, ask if you have a concern about anything. I've never been to South Africa, been to Ghana which I loved.

Definitley don't throw anything on the ground. It is one of the cleanest places I have been too.

Yeah I have heard alot of good things about it, pretty much all I have been told is to not spit on the sidewalks. And I don't ever litter anyways, we at least not in TX.

Ok here are some shots from walking around Singapore

This is from the river walk, this area was lined with places to eat and bars and little shops, tons of people.

the white lit up towers in this one are actually the supports to one of those big swings and a bungee cord bouncy ball ride

if you walk all the way to the end of the river it opens up onto what they call marina bay...

everything in the next two pictures was built on reclaimed land, this used to be ocean...

our hotel was located just down the street from china town and we were lucky enough to get there before they took down the decorations for the chinese new year. here is the dragon that ran down the median of the road at the entrance to china town

here are a couple pictures from a walk way that goes over the street.

http://i1130.photobucket.com/albums/m523/rdlangston13/Picture039.jpg

there was a building know as the marina bay hotel, it consisted of three 55 story towers all connected at the bottom by a huge lobby and at the top by a giant ship looking thing. every since we saw the building wanted to go inside it.

so we went to the top of the crazy building, we wanted to go all up and down the top but it was sectioned off, 20 bucks to go to the observation deck or you could go to the bar and just buy a 18 dollar tiger beer. we went to the bar

The top of the building had a pool that ran pretty much the length of it lined on both sides by palm trees, this area was for hotel guests only, there was an observation deck and then slightly higher up behind that was the bar and restaurant wherre we went, there was also a night club up there.

Singapore has the worlds largest observation wheel, aka big ass ferris wheel. The capsules are fully enclosed and air conditioned and you can have dinner on it.

If you look on the horizon on this last one all those lights are from ships waiting in the harbor. hundreds if not thousand of them. never seen so many ships in place before in my life

This was my ride across the indian ocean. The Stena Forth deep water drill ship...

this was a jack up rig we saw being welded to the deck of this transport ship to moved overseas. amazing how the flood the transport ship to sink it, pull the jack up over the top of it, then pump all the water out and the transport ship picks it up

If you go to Google Maps and look at Singapore and zoom in a bit and look at "satellite" view or use Google Earth, it is truly amazing. You can see just tons of ships everywhere. It looks like a rail yard. If it was air traffic it would be an air traffic controller's nightmare. Just amazing how much goes through there.

Thanks for sharing the great pics.

Those pics are awesome. My dad went to Singapore for a week a couple years back and said it was unreal. He didn't take many great pics like that though.

Kane, thats nuts! When you zoom in more and more ships show up!

Oh... and since the beers are $18, have two for me. I'll pay you back later.

Yea, I'm definitely bringing my own ship, even if it's full of Natty Light-- $18 is way too steep for Kane.

I loved it there when I visited but the alcohol is outrageous. We found a place on the outskirts of town that sold beer a little cheaper. Some of the biggest prawns (shrimp) that I have ever seen in a tank.

Wow. Great pics David.

Maybe I have missed it, but how did you get involved in your career? Very cool job brother.

Also, why is beer so expensive?

jmb
03-22-2012, 08:39 PM
Singapore does not want to promote alcohol so therefore they raised the prices through the roof. Not to many drunks then. They are wierd about that.

Hey guys I am back state side at my casa and will throw up some south Africa pictures as soon as I get a chance! Talk about beautiful beaches and clear blue water! Way different than our Texas beaches.

Bulldog- Schlumberger did on campus interviews at UTI (where I went to school) and that's where I got hooked up with them. They wouldn't hire anyone under 21 so I worked for Sewell Cadillac in Dallas for just over a year until my birthday and then the rest is history.
