I bought a 1998 Outback and it does not have a blower in the motor compartment. Should it have or does it have to?

I had a 99 outback and the blower was located on the back transom. May be there or under the floor beside the mufflers. Hit the blower button and see where the noise comes from.

Look behind the panel at the very back. Follow the tubes to the blower.

And to answer the other part of your question - yes, it should have a blower. It's a pretty important piece of equipment on boats, and is usually required by law.

If you find your boat doesn't have one I suggest getting one.

Here in MT and WY it's on the inspection list that you have one (and it's working) :)

so do yall run the blower every time you start the engine or just the first time or keep it running all day or what?

I usually kick mine on when we stop between sets if I turn the motor off.
If floating I'll kick it on for awhile after we stop and then shut it off. Or I'll kick it on a few minutes before firing it up again.
I don't keep it running 24/7

My 99 Mobius has the blower fan mounted behind the back panel (between outer hull and panel) . That and the bilge pump are the only two things I have had to replace on my boat (not counting shaft packing and impeller). If you think about it the fan should definitely NOT be in the motor compartment. Since these are DC motor - presumably brush type motors - the probability of a spark, especially at startup, is pretty high.

The 98 should be on the starboard side next to the engine block.

Yes, every time I start the engine the blower goes on first for ten seconds. In addition, if running at idle speed the blower stays on. Anything faster than idle speed it is turned off as I figure the air flow is sufficient to push vapors out of the motor box.
