Pulled the trigger on a new to me rig.

08 F350 6.4 Diesel Crew Cab Lariat 4x4.

I know most recall just 18months ago i got ole Black Betty, and I did lol. I really expected her to be my rig for a long time but time and work tell the story. Most Diesel guys know the 6.0 is a coin toss for longevity depending on if you fix the few weaknesses it has. Well truth be told, I have regretting selling my 06 F150 because i really loved the interior. The 06 F350 has the older interior and it never was my style.

After the 5K trip we took to AZ for the Hollidays my programmer was showing some temp deltas i dont like to see, the dreaded oil cooler getting clogged, at best its a 1K repri for me to replace it 30 man hours of work. To fix it the right way its 4K worth the work for a professional shop. I just couldnt risk my summer without a tow rig. So i hunkered down and set some very strick goals on a new rig hunt.

6 hours of hunting the net, reading all the forums on the 6.4 for its weaknesses and issue and this is the truck i picked up today.

Miles are a little more then i like but Ford says the engine is rated for 500K and this engine is a lot more stable and tons more power then my 6.0.

Stock the 6.4 puts down more HP to the ground and torque them my 6.0 did tuned.
I will miss Black Betty as my first big Diesel but the 08 just driving it around town and home tonight has already really impressed me and made me an extreamly happy camper.

Check her out. Ask anything you like about her.
Shes a 08 Lariet Edition
2 weeks i have an appointment to get a front end leveling kit to raise it up 2.5 inches to match the rear hieght. I have the 5K air bags in the garage to install, and she is getting a Duel front stabalizer setup like Betty had.

At least you waited to do this AFTER giving C the ring! Man, would your a$$ have been in trouble if you hadn't.

Great looking truck.

Looks sharp Mike! I haven't been a big fan of the 08+ headlights but I'm sure they could grow on me. That dash is screaming for a dual din touchscreen with backup cam.

Looks good man. I'm having a few issues with my 6.0 right now, and the wifes Edge, I'm about to hit my limit of b.s. I can deal with and pull the double trigger.

Now there is an idea.

Good looking truck Mike! Congrats. Did you pull the tuner or going to get an all new setup?

Yell yes i pulled my tuner LOL. I will be upgrading to a whole new set up in a year or so. Its about 1600 to get the DPF delete, CAI, and Mini Max Tuner you need on this truck. Not sure what im doing with my current tuner but i knew i wasnt leaving it behind for some other smuck LOL. I also was able to sneak my custom sub and Exile amp out when they left me alone for 5 minutes LOL.

What sorts of problems you having man? I know the 6.0 in and out.

@Dave 6.4 has its quirks too but its a much different engine then the 6.0 and does tend to have a lot less issues.
@Viking nope no new boat Claudia has put a hault to my spending once again LOL I mainly bought this new truck because i was never truly happy in my 6.0 i just really missed my F150 inteior upgrade and the 08F350 has that upgrade. Also with looking down the road and the direction my 6.0 was going i felt its really cheaper in the long run to upgrade now while i still had a lot of positive equity in it.
@ Drew Yes if i bought this rig before her ring i would be living it in im sure LOL.

Looks REALLY nice. Congrats.

Our preacher just traded his old 6.0 in for a 6.4, strictly becuase of mileage. Even with a higher payment, he's saving a couple hundred $$$ a month!!!

everything i have heard/read states that the 6.4 gets far far WORSE mileage than the 6.0

everything i have heard/read states that the 6.4 gets far far WORSE mileage than the 6.0

It does out of the Dealer stock compared to a Modified 6.0

My 6.0 with a tuner programmer, stright pipe exhaust, and FICM reflash was averaging 15 to 17 in town and 17 to 19 on the hwy.
Stock my 6.0 was getting 11.5 to 13 city and 15 to 18hwy

My 6.4 stock is getting 12 to 14 city and 15 to 17 hwy so fare.
If i straight pipe it, tuner programmer and cold air intake upgrade <1600> i should see 15 to 17 city and 18 to 23 hwy.

Even reading on the Diesel site a lot of guys say the 6.4 gets 10 to 12 city and it will if you cant keep your foot out of it. It turbos spool super fast and lay the power down really hard with twin turbos. So you gotta stay out of it. With it being so quite with electric injectors now you can barley hear the engine so they dont realize there on it so hard.

I will admit this truck right now is getting about 1 to 1.5 mpg less stock then my 6.0 modified but you have to expect that with Emmision crap still on the new one.

my sister had a 06 f350 fx4 and she claimed it was getting 23 hwy with the 6.0 and i believe it was stock, she may be full of crap though

Guantee she was full of chit on that LOL. Even going down hill from San Bernadino i only got 19.5 and stock best i ever saw was 19 on an 80 mile stretch that was slightly downhill.

People on the forums say they are getting 20+ in a 6.0 but its heavily modified. The fuel ratios the factory uses just doesnt support it.

But who am i to rain on her sunny day at the gas pump. If shes really thinking shes getting 23 mpg then she should be seeing 700+ miles a tank. Best i see is about 650 a tank on the interstate.

they got rid of the truck now, they bought it with 186,000 miles on it and pretty much started having issues right out of the gate. they traded it in on a 2007 ext cab 2wd 1500 silverado with the 5.3 with only like 17,000 miles, i'm thinking this should be cheaper to maintain and more reliable

mmandley
01-07-2012, 08:22 PM
Yes it diffidently should but hope they don't get the we got a new truck syndrome and skip out on maintenance. At the very least they need to replace the fuel filter, get a transmission service, get the belts and hoses checked. That truck as sat idle mostnof it's life and dry sets in also fluids go bad just sitting idle in a car for years. I'm sure the truck was driven every so often but your only talking 3300 miles per year.

Mike, Awesome truck and from what I see on the forum congratulations to you and Claudia. I would love to have a truck like that but my family of five and a few friends just doesn't work with a truck. By the way Dodge kind of made fun of the sissy step, but do you like it?

mmandley
01-08-2012, 08:43 PM
If younmean sissy step as the tailgate step? Dodge is jealous they didn't think of it first lol

I love it man. No more hopping on the tail gate then standing up with dirty pants. Lol

Also I taught Oso to use it and now he can jump in the bed of the truck.

I could live without it but I'm not going to not use it because I'm to macho lol

wolfeman131

That's funny; Dodge using "sissy" for an easier way to get into the back of the truck bed when they have a heated steering wheel option. If you're wearing WORK gloves, why do you need a heated steering wheel? Pansies.

IDK man i cant get past the nose of that boat. I love the rest but its like a totaly hot chick with a train wrecked face. Its no big deal how good she is in the dark if you cant take her out for everyone to see LOL.

Right now only 3 boats are on my short list to buy
Tige RZ4
Supra 242
Axis 22

Not in that order but you get the idea LOL.

We have a very similar list, except the whole Axis thing. Not sure how that boat makes it on the same list as the above two, lol.

is the supra 242 real weight sensitive like and lsv and do you have to go fast to get a clean wake with ballast??

Its on the list doue to Price point. The other 2 boats are 80K+ and the Axis is 50K lol. Basically if i get another boat it will be a 24Fter.

Dave, from what i understand the 242 is a fare superior hull then the XLV and has a much different wake charicteristic.

I think all skiers boats are going to be weight sensitive to some extent due to the deep v keel.
