They've come out with slightly dumbed down version, the 960p. It won't do 1080p and won't do 60 fps. But for us amateurs, I think it should be fine. I picked one up at Costco for $139. Didn't come with any bikini clad accessories though :(

It is a great camera. I do recommed getting the flot back just in case it comes off your wakeboard or you want to see how far you can throw it into the lake. Really cool video of it flying thru the air to dropping into the water. Yes you can get board floating waiting for the wind to die down.

People, cut it out. We're going to Hawaii in a month and one of the kids is coming. I just bought stuff from Dusty and Kyle. This camera would get some great pictures of me and the kid surfing. Looks like I gotta check the bank account. I guess you can't take it with you.

I was saving up for perfect pass next summer, but if I keep looking at the forums I'll never get it.

Ron,
Go Pro now Perfect pass in four months. Win Win. I took my go pro with me to Hawaii and went all over with it. I did not take it diving since i just got it when i went but now i would since it works great. Somthing back then about taking it 60 feet down even with knowing it is rated for 120 feet. Only thing i would do is before you open it being in salt water is to do a fresh water wash then let it dry.

1. Unfortunately my play money doesn't add up that quickly. But I'll probably be getting the camera before we go, and get a loan if I have to for PP. Can't put it in until spring anyway. Probably last time son will be with us on a vacation. He's already looking at moving out on his own.
2. We've already got another compact underwater camera, and did exactly what you said before salt water exposure. In addition, after every exposure we immerse the camera in a sink filled with fresh water for about 15 minutes, to clean it out as much as possible

We got it in from the fed ex guy and heard se rattling around inside it and upon further investigation we found a small piece of black plastic bouncing around that appears to be from the black bracket that hold the actual camera. Very small defect but for 300 bucks I want it to be new new

Do you guys use the GoPro just for action/water sports and have another video camera for Christmas morning, everyday around the house, family trips etc?

Needing a video camera in the worst way, but need one that does all of the above. Don't really mind buying two, but if the GoPro will do both then thats what I will purchase.

I ended up with the Kodak Playsport bc I wanted one that could do both. Are you stuck with the wide angled lense for gopro or can you switch? I think that is the only issue you would have using the gopro for both.

Then you don't want a GoPro. I bought a Sony TSX-10 at the suggestion of someone on here, its a digital still camera, as well as HD video, and it is AWESOME; I've considered making a wakeboard mount for it as well.

The GoPro is cool, but pretty limited in what it can do. Its super wide angle lens makes people look funny, lack of zoom, and 3 button operation is cumbersome. For anything other than actionsports, I wouldn't reccomend it.

Ian, what kind of mount did you use on your board and on that ski? If I don't get a GP2 for Christmas, I'm buying it for myself, and was curious if the surfboard mount was needed for wakeboard/surfboard/ski type of use. Of, if something like the suction cup would hold. I have heard it does, but I am curious.

IDK about Go Pro making people look funky, i think that might be in the settings, i have watched a ton of Go Pro stuff and people look pretty normal there. Its designed as an On Off camera. You turn it on and do your sport and then turn it off when your done. Then you video edit it to suit what you want to save.

We bought the D5100 to take still shots and any video on land we want and bought the Go Pro for the boat. The best thing about the Go Pro is its 1080 HD wide angle, and has a decent size memory. Ohh yea its water proof lol

I had the 1080P version for a year and just sold it and got the HD Hero2. The new Hero 2 has a clearer picture and better colors then previous models and also works better in lower light (the only major complaint of the older Go pros). It can also do stills at 11mp at 10fps. It can aslo film at 120fps in DVD res which makes for awesome slo mo shots. Can't wait to use it this summer. here are a few quicks shots from it of my kids snowboards. my son is 3.5 and daughter is 6.

I just use the provided sticky mounts and a leash. They are fairly strong, but ive had one pop off the wakeboard once, hence the leash.

They have a floatie leash for it if you didn't get one. Brostock claimed my first playsport. It was floating around on one of the liquid force tubes with a buddy when he dropped it. :( The 2nd one I bought I got the leash.

I saw a GoPro Hero on Woot a week or so ago. Was very tempting but I resisted unlike Mr. Ashton. I already had the Krypt EQ and a new transom remote on the way so I figured that was enough for this month!

At surf distance the video looks good, boarding is definitely further out and hard to see detail. I'm guessing these are fixed zoom/focus?

gotcha , i was confused by the fcs mount.

The Surf HERO includes two, removable mounting options:

1. A stick-on baseplate that takes a couple of minutes to set up and go.
2. An FCS™ compatible plug mounting system that allows you to allen-screw your camera into the deck of your board when you install an FCS™ center fin plug into the deck of your board. Easily done by any ding repairer or shaper.

suction cup mount, tether and floaty will be a must for the summer months.

Joe,

I think they are talking about the FCS fin system.

http://surffcs.com/us/index.aspx

That would require cutting a hole on the nose of your board and putting an FCS fin box in it, plus a plug instead of a fin. And the gopro must mount to the plug. Probably a must for using in the ocean where boards get quite a beating from the waves. The adhesive mounts wouldn't stand a chance.

I stopped by Best Buy (I hate that store) and picked up the suction cup mount to use on the back of the boat.

I hate that place too. In fact, I've always hated it. They put Highland and Fretter and Silo and all those other cheesy places out of business. Then Circuit City-- never liked them much either but at least you could play with the remotes on the Big TV's there and hear the car speakers and stuff.

they make a rollcage mount that just bArely fits the ski pylon and i M pretty sure the handle bAr mount will fit the grab rail on the stern. I not a big funny of hanging expensive toys with suction cups

Ah, didn't see those at Best Buy. I'm not thrilled with the thought of the suction cup myself. However the camera package I got has the floatie back, but I'm not sure if it's enought to keep it bouyant with the suction cup mount. I was planning to use one of my scuba lanyards as a safety line from the camera to the grab handle.

Anybody care to confirm the diameter of the grab bar?

Attach your GoPro camera to handlebars, seatposts, ski poles and more. Fits 0.75″ to 1.4″ (1.9cm – 3.5cm) diameter tubes.

(moved this thread to Off Topic as I probably should have started it here.)

Took the gopro out this weekend and shot some video that many of you are wanting to see. But, I'm having a hard time seeing what I shot on the pc. Found the below on gopro's website:

The video plays back choppy or broken up.
•To ensure that the video is recorded properly, please playback the videos directly on a TV with HD and AV component cables. You should get proper smooth playback on your TV.
•Choppy video playback will usually come down to the computer not being able to process the data fast enough of the large HD video files.
•First, please make sure you have downloaded the file to your computer and are not playing back the file directly off the SD card. You will not be able to get proper playback if playing directly from the SD card.
•If having choppy playback from the downloaded file, you can try restarting your computer and keeping all other applications closed while playing back the video. This will maximize the computer’s processing power for video playback.
•If still having choppy video playback, then your computer system most likely does not have enough processing power to handle the high data rate of full HD or 60fps video files (r3 or r5). Recording at the lower resolution settings of r1 or r2 should allow you to playback the files smoothly on your computer

Tried the above except hooking to the tv as I don't have a mini hdmi cable. I'd like to edit (start/stop points, some text and a little audio) and post what I shot to share, but I'm struggling.

Anybody have some real world experience and suggestions?

thanks, Kane but I'll be heading out to the dreaded Best Buy right after the conference call I'm on now. I'm anxious to see the video and disappointed that it's not working out so well on the pc.

Your unit came with a mini to mini hdmi cable? I could have sworn i got the mini to fullsize hdmi with mine.

Are you just putting the sd card in your computer and trying to watch it? How new is your pc/laptop?

We had a blast on our trip! However Heidi did not pick up on snowboard as much as we all thought/hoped she would.

Btw we have a women's snow board for sale for anyone who is interested.

Have not started to edit any of the video we shot though. Set the go pro to take a picture every 2 seconds and ended up with over 600 pictures

I think the only I got was a USB to charge the battery, no HDMI. Yes, popping it in SD slot in a Sony Vaio laptop that is 4 yrs old. Took it to a friends house with a Mac & it looked great. Guess Im getting another accessory.

Try copying the video from the SD card onto your hard drive, then watch it from the hard drive. Your older machine may be huffing and puffing a little on the data transfer rate trying to view it directly off the SD card. But I'm guessing that will work better...
