Would this be a good beginner/community surf board? I have very little experience surfing and am hoping our boat with our newly installed ballast 750 sb and 1180 center/front will create a decent surf wave for us to mess around with.

This is one you learn on then keep in the boat forever. All newbies can ride it and won't ding up your nice new board. My first board was one of these. I still ride it now and then b/c it's fun. I like to take out the center fin and make it a little more "slippery". But, with all 3 in it is very stable for learning. Everybody from kids to mid size adults can ride this one. I have the bigger one for larger adults but Moombadaze has this one. I wouldn't want this one for anyone over about 190 lbs. though.

Evo has 30% off of their outlet going on now and we are thinking of pulling the trigger on a wakesurfer. First of all, we are going to have 1180 center bag and 750 port (They won't be able to get 100% full). I am hoping this will at least be enough for us to get started into surfing. Assuming this is enough, I can get the hyperlite broadcast for $160 (blemished, 5' 6") or the 4' 9" non blemished for $185. Leaning towards the 4' 9" since I'm 145 lbs and the rest of the family is all less than 190... Thoughts? Is this a good price? Thanks in advance!

I'll bet with your ballast setup the wave will be on the medium side of size. Bigger wave = easier to ride smaller boards. Smaller wave = bigger boards are easier. Given that your crew is fairly light the 4'9" board should ride fine if you can get a good wave setup.

I ride a 5' IS Squirt and I'm 205 so I've got you by a solid 60lbs or more but I do run a little more ballast. Buddy of mine is around 140, rode a HL 5'3" and my 5' Squirt both just fine. So, you're "probably" ok with the short board. The 5'6" you're more than ok. Prices are similar to what I've seen on CL for used ones, although you'd have to factor in shipping.
