Homemade Surf Rope?

Anyone ever made their own? I've seen a couple but they weren't too great. I thought it might be a fun winter project. Anyone have any good plans or know where I could get some?

I made one from an old ski rope. Cut the handle down to make a T. It was allright but not as nice or as heavy as the real one I got for Xmas last year.

I would think for safety sake it would be easier just to buy. Especially since you can pick up a nice one for less than $40.

I agree. Make your own and save the $40. Bring your $40 down here to Texas and I'll make your head spin :eek: That will get you more than a tug on your rope.

Does anyone out there have any weave/braid patterns for this? My neighbor tried doing one and he had the right weave but the rope he used to do it was too thin to begin with so he ended up with a thin, painful surf rope.

I did one of these last summer with an old tube rope and a ski rope with handle and like it better than the ProLine-T I got for fathers day!

I made it the same length as the Proline at 25ft. Cut the three pieces a little longer than 25 with the handle one one of them, clamped them down in a vice on the opposite end, and then just started braiding it like it was a girl's long hair. (I have a daughter so I've had some practice)

Pulling it as tight as I could as I went. (Dusty's Mom taught me that)

It is nice and thick and easy to hang onto. (KG's mom is getting all excited now)

Tied if off and melted it with a flame so it won't come undone. Works awesome and never a strain on the hands!

Don't have a better picture but I made one out of a tubing rope. What I like is no T handle. I think I used 4 sections thick and wrapped it in hockey stick tape. Works great.

For me, no access to rope, it's in a storage facility with the boat. But if memory serves I just ran the 4 lengths parallel, about 18 inches, and used the tape to keep everything together. You could also twist them, like a piece of liquorish, and tape while twisting.

The key is that it needs to be big enough to be able to get a good grasp on. Otherwise your hands get tired quickly.

That one's easy! Hell, I may have to make another braided surf rope myself now that I'm thinking about it.

Yup, braided just the way my daughter showed me. OK, I had to get her to do it. You can watch videos of how to braid on you tube.

Aw, go for it. It isn't like it is pulling up 3,000 lbs! If you don't mind blisters you could even use a redneck tow rope! No big deal. I once broke a rope going into the course (full) as I crossed the start buoys. It blew like a gun shot and I went straight out the back seat at 40+ mph. You break a surf rope and your doing what, 10 mph max? A worse case scenario would be a surf board tip to the forehead...

I'm not really looking to make a rope out of necessity, I'm just looking for a small winter project. A simple 3-strand braid like a pony tail isn't what I'm looking to do, though.

See if I make any more jokes Chris!!! ;-) I do mean that though, there is not all that much force on the surfboard. Pull-up is the most but even then it still isn't that much. I surfed behind a friend's Supra using a Walmart rope. I carry a surf rope in my boat all the time (Masterline) so I don't worry about it too much.
