October in Michigan...

First time using the dry suit this season. 60* water and 63* air; I could have done just wet suit, but I was feeling a little girly...

What the.... Sissy! :D You need to come up to the PNW so we can toughen you up boy. Don't think our water ever got over 70 at the peak of summer...

I don't have much to contribute as far as pics go unfortunately. This is how I spent my first weekend in October...

LOL, our lake is normally a total zoo; it is the biggest inland lake in Oakland County, Michigan (where I live), and always has a ton of traffic, except in the "off season"

Sadly, that is not my house. I don't live on the lake, just keep our boat in a marina on the lake. House prices on the water are pretty high around here, but the area immediately around the lakes is not where I'd want to live, so I commute to the lake. Thinking about a cottage on a less public lake sometime in the future...

This summer we were out nearly every week day after work; Laura (my soon to be wife) is truly a "boaters widow" from April-September. Fortunately my office is ~15 minutes from where I keep the boat, so its easy enough to shoot out for a quick set after work. Took the afternoon off yesterday, I rode without a wet or dry suit (But I also did dock starts and stops, lol)

This was her first season riding, and she progressed pretty well. I'd imagine that if she rode a shorter rope (currently at 75') or we put more weight in the boat (or had a v-Drive) she'd clear the wake. As some guys we know from the lake said one day "She's really good, for a girl" lol.

Sweet! I cut my teeth behind my dad's 12ft aluminum overpowered by a new 15hp Johnson. Kneeboarding mostly, a little skiing. Took a mile or two to get up but was doable. I'd have to dig those pics out and scan them as it was a loooooooooooong time ago. Still have the boat though!

Can totally relate to that - pulling up on the beach next to big daycruisers and DD's in the little aluminum skiff. "Wazzup" Pulling out the rope and board and getting the weirdest looks.

We were anchored off the beach in Grand Bend Canada 2 summers ago and this kid (maybe 18 years old) came running down the beach all the way to our boat; he was fawning over our boat and all but begged for a pull; I told him I'd be happy to - a few minutes later he was back with his board. He threw a few tantrums and was a really good rider, when I asked him what he normally rode behind he said that his parents had like a 16' Sea Swirl or something outboard. I was blown away that he was so good with literally never riding behind an inboard. Just goes to show, its all about the rider, not the equipment!

I grew up behind a 14.5 foot Glastron Tri-Hull with 70hp outboard. That thing walked all over the place if anyone pulled hard at all. Heading out tomorrow and Monday to ski the course. Weather here is awesome 80 degrees next 2 days. I'll try to get some pics to add to the string. I'm wuss of the century though as I'll be wearing full wet suit. Water is hovering right at 60 degrees...

Urghh . . . .

Kiddos had Monday off scholl so we were looking forward to a full, 3 day weekend of surfing. The water temp & air temp were great this weekend BUT the dang wind was whipping like crazy and turned the lake into nasty chop that prevented anybody from getting to ride behind the boat.

So, we pulled the winter toys out and got some fun in between watching football & movies, eating chili & smores and just having a lazy family weekend.

Yeah we went out Sunday and had the same issue. As I approached the ski course I could not even see the bouys due to the waves being whipped up by the wind. I asked my son if he really wanted to ski and he said yes as he was putting on his shortie wetsuit. So I approached the course from the other side where I could see the bouys. When I turned I just drove back through my wake so I could see where to go as I could not see the boat bouys. Well he made 4 passes and as soon as he got 6 bouys he dropped the rope and we headed home. It was amazing to see him ski in that stuff, I know there was no way I was going to.
Oh and the wife, well she brought her wetsuit but decided she wasn't going to give it a try (weinie). Maybe this weekend will be better.

False. The suit really isn't that bad or uncomfortable and you get the lake all to yourself. Well maybe you have to share it with those fisherman that look at you like you are insane.

mmandley
10-12-2011, 10:09 AM
if it didnt rain here so much id invest in a drysuit. but since i refuse to go out when its raining the wet suit does for the colder water when the sun is out at least

Says the person that lives in Texas and has a never ending season. Come to Michigan and we'll see how long you last without a dry suit!

On a side note, our water temp is back up to like 65, I wakeboarded and skiied last night without wet or dry suit and it wasn't cold at all. The heater makes for a nice ride back :)

And those are exactly your choices when the air and water temps drop to the 50s - bring out the suits or stay home.

I love that I have the lake to myself this time of year. Everyone else has winterized thier boats yet we still get out and ride for another month. Same way in the spring. Stretching the season from 4 months to 6 months is huge!

10-12-2011, 12:23 PM
We were out yesterday. Only boat on the lake. Water was a brisk 48 and air was pretty cool too. Dry Suits are a must. Up in Canada, without a Dry Suit our season would be like 3 months long LOL. You texas guys have no idea how lucky you are to not have to deal with snow for 7 months!

I also really like the dry suit. Its comfortable, light, and helps a little on bad crashes too. One of if not the best investment I have made in terms of watersports, has added 2 months to my season.

If you are thinking about a dry suit, get one, they are awesome, you won't regret it.

Mikey
10-12-2011, 09:33 PM
I have to agree ,that a drysuit is a great investment. As our seasons are short as is and the water is much colder. If ''we'' Toughened Canadians need them ,how long do you warm weather boaters ,really think you would last. NOT LONG i can assure you. Even as is when you come out in 40 ish degree water, there is really no feeling in feet and exposed areas till you start to thaw out ,but it is the price many of us are will to pay to get out and enjoy.

My boat is outta action and winterized but if the offer came up to go out i'd still be out in a heart beat,WITH MY DRYSUIT of course.

Last time it'll see the light of a sunny day for a good 7-8 months... Hopefully summer 2012 will start earlier than 2011 did around here.

Oil changed, winterized, all cushions & ballast out, tower speakers off, sub out, basically anything that's not bolted down. Covered and tucked away under the carport. Didn't shed a single tear (as far as anyone knows)...

Yeah, and did you notice that his daughter ISN'T wearing one?!?!?!

MAN UP, Daze! :)

well, it was more for the wind chill than anything (water isnt that bad) but wont you didnt see was this last weekend she was wearing my shorty suite while TUBING of all things-been able to get away with not pulling those things since being at your place back in july, I may just accidentaly leave them there next year

one good thing, the cooler water temps in fall really keep the natives off the lakes-we pretty much have the lake to ourselves now.

Went out for a little weekday ride yesterday. Air was mid to lower 70s and the water was 64. Still trunking it but that was about the limit for shorts only. Sun was the only thing making it doable.
