Woke up this morning to find my Exile system gone. 3 amps and the sub were taken, as well as the boat trashed. It was stolen last night as I slept in my own bed just feet away. Still kind of in shock. Made a police report (they don't plan to do anything) and called my home owners insurace (insurance agent is discouraging me from making a claim). Really hate to sound sappy or cliche, but this sh!t really ruins my faith in humanity. Very depressed, really don't even want to go out to the lake tomorrow even though it's gonna be 95 degrees.:sad::sad:

These occurrences may happen more frequently with the way the economy is going.

Did you have pics of your stereo setup?

that's the reason that I have an extra 5 g's of personal property ins and also all the stereo stuffs well documented and covered as well

That sucks to hear you lost all your exile gear I would make the claim in insurance honestly!! isn't it this type of thing the reason that we pay for it month after month year after year, but of course the ins man don't want you to make a claim he just wants to collect not pay out when the time comes

yeah, I'm VERY curious why your insurance would be poo-pooing you submitting a claim for it??? You pay for something you never hope to use for years and years...

Hopefully you have a smaller deductible and you can get back what you lost (and then some)?

Side note, few years ago a buddy of mine had his Malibu stripped clean one night as he slept. Went through or over his big fence and gate to do it - very ballsy and they had to know him because from the street you'd never know there was boat hiding where it was. His problem is that he has a big mouth and apparently the wrong people were listening at some point when he was bragging it up.

Because he will be dropped for a claim of that size and the agent knows that. I also made a legitimate claim about 10 years ago when my truck was broken into and everything stolen. The auto insurance covered the damage but personal property is on your homeowners. Shortly thereafter they dropped me and i had to get another provider at a higher cost. After five years or so with no claims I could get a cheaper rate again. Same exact thing happened to my neighbor a couple years ago when his very expensive golf clubs were swiped from his garage. It's BS because you pay thousands literally for this coverage but if you actually have to use it your hosed.

Hmmmm - I guess personal property and homeowners is diff than a mariner policy or an accident claim. I've have a few accident claims on my mariner policy over the last 5 yrs, hefty to say the least, and only bumped my rates by a very small amount.

I can understand the humanity comment as well. I came home this evening to find my wife up in arms because someone stole one of the two "slow children playing" signs we have in front of our house... WTH? I guess someone needed it more than we did... but really? a children's sign?

have your gear scheduled if you can as personal property on your homeowners. it eliminates the deductible for a small amount if additional ins.

Thanks for the vibes guys. It just keeps getting better though - now I see that ipods, binoculars, 50ft of expensive wire, throttlebox for the harpoon amp and numerous other things (including registration for boat/trailer) are gone. The bastards also decided to f'up the valve stems on the trailer tires! So I spent all day on the phone with the cops, the insurance company, pawn shops and running back and forth to Les Schwab to get the tires fixed. A real day to forget.

To answer some questions - yes our boat is stored outside in the driveway but is always covered. I really did think this neighborhood was safe, until now I guess. Still haven't decided whether or not to make a claim with the insurance company. Anybody else have some insight on whether it is worth it or not?

Thanks

my. 02 says if its close to your deductible then eat the loss. no claim if the value and damage is well over the deductible then i would file a claim. which i assume it might be.

My boat is insured with BoatUS, and the stereo is not considered personal property. I do however have an additional rider that covers personal property and watersports equipment. I believe $5,000 coverage is ~$75/year. Since my boat is at the marina 6 months a year it's nice having the piece of mind.

Your boat insurance really should cover it! Razz is right, homeowners woud be a mistake. I called a couple months ago and asked what was, and was not covered in my boat, and they said if its in the boat it's covered. There would be no questions asked if gear like boards, vests, and stereo equipment of any kind were missing it would be covered, whether it was at home or we were on vacation. I would definately persue boat insurance.
Have you even spoke with your boat insurance?

09-10-2011, 09:58 PM
Yeah, I seem to remember that when I got my Inland Marine policy for my boat, the agent asked me if I wanted to cover any boat accessories as well, so I think i added some coverage for the stereo and racks and such and it maybe covers the boards and stuff too.

walb0244

I know with my boat insurance it covers 2,000 dollars worth of personal gear. So I would assume that would mean the stereo and such. The thing that gets me is how dumb it is that if you make a claim that your insurance will drop you. A storm came through when I lived in Tennessee and ripped a woman's roof off of her house. She made a claim to her insurance. Well about 7 months earlier she made a claim too because another storm had ripped a bunch of shingles off of her house. She was a elderly woman and couldn't afford to pay for it out of pocket. She had insurance with the company for years and they dropped her. I think that is bull.
Well we will collect the money from you for insurance but the minute you need it back to cover something that should be covered we will drop you. I think that is complete crap. That and raiseing your premium. I think that is bull too. I mean I could understand it if I did something like hitting someone with my car or something. But raise my premiums becuase some low life piece of crap breaks into my shit and steals it. I think that is bull as well.

Really sorry to hear this. We keep our boat in the garage but lately, if I am going to take the boat out on consecutive days, I just park it on the street still hooked up to the truck and put the cover on. So far so good but now I'm wondering if this might not be a good idea.

So sorry to hear this. Hope the insurance company does right by you on this! Always a concern of ours because we keep ours at the house when we are going out on consecutive days. We typically pull the gear out of the boat though. The rest of the time it is at a covered storage spot with 24x7 video surveillance and owners live on the property. We store it there mostly because of the effort to get it into the garage (tower has to fold down and lots of jockeying to get it into place. We have less than 2" of clearance between the front of the boat and the garage door). We know it will fit in the garage if we have to, but prefer the ability to hook up and go with minimal effort.

Hope for the best for you!

Hmmm, I like the idea of exploring my boat insurance to cover this. I also get my boat insurance through state farm, who covers my homeowners, auto and umbrella policies. I think I'll give my agent a call tomorrow and see what the specifics of the policy are as it pertains to theft. Anybody else insure their boat through State Farm and actually make a claim?

If you park in your driveway you can have your boat connected to your home alarm if you have one. You could have a custom connector made for a proximiy sensor in the boat and when in the driveway just plug it in near the garage.

If you have all of your other insurance with State Farm I would not be afraid to make a claim. They know who you are. The biggest issue with theft claims is fraud. Sounds like State Farm has a history with you and knows who you are. With the trailer tire damage, etc., I would say the claim looks absolutely like vandals/thieves. I don't think you'll have any problem. I made boat damage claims (not theft) 2 years in a row and my rate (with another similar company) only went up a couple of bucks.

bbyquist, I've been with several different insurance companies over the years, state farm being one. They're all crooks as far as I'm concered. After I bought my second boat I started shopping again because they wanted way too much for coverage. I finally landed on Pemco. They are a Washington based company and only cover WA residents. They have the best rates, best coverage, and I have never had ANY issues with ANY claims. If this ends badly I would seriously look into them.

They hold my home, cars, boat, trailers, and life policies. Absolutly love them. At least have them work up a quote for you. I think you'll be suprised.
I'm pretty sure you get a discount right off the bat because you don't live in King County (Seattle).lol

The best alarm is the sound of a shell being loaded into a 12 gauge! Seriously though... I think someone mentioned earlier that you can tie it in to your house alarm somehow... they should elaborate for you maybe.

Being as the boat sits in the driveway you'll need either a stand-alone wireless alarm solution or a custom auto alarm. Running a cable to tie in to the home alarm (if you have one) is a dead give-away somethings there. I have a wireless IR beam alarm that alerts when the beam is broken, just like the devices in business entries and can place the sensor in or outside the boat. The reciever sits on my nightstand next to the bed and it's set to high volume. I've heard of car alarms so that when the cover is removed or hatches opened it sounds off as well. There are many wireless solutions for home security that fit the bill, just search "wireless alarm system" and you'll find plenty.

Also, place a non-motion light on your home where it can't be got to and focus the beam directly on the boat. Use the type that have the dusk to dawn sensor. Light is a burgurlars worst enemy second to an alarm and 99% of the time they'll just pass it up.

I tried to post from tapatalk this morning about exactly what Razz is talking about. There was a wireless home alarm advertised in Sunday's paper at Nothern Tool. It has 2 montion sensors and a control unit for $75 after a $25 rebate. It was on the back page of the ad.

Many home alarm motion sensors use a combination of IR and radar so that they are less prone to falsing. They are mounted high with a limited field to compensate for false alarms created by house pets. The results can be very unpredictable in an exterior environment due to wind, rain and temperature extremes. I like the idea of the battery-powered wireless sensor but do a little investigation first on the particular sensor and the application in a boat.

I second Newty on the Pemco recommendation - have had them for 10+ years for auto/home/mariner, no complaints. When I did have a claim the adjuster was down to AWS next day to scope it out. Approved the repairs and my boat jumped from about 6th in line and waiting a month to 1st in line and back to me in about a week! 2 sizable claims in 5 years, minimal rate increase.

bb, are you in the tri-cities? I got my motorcycle stolen out of my garage on July 4th and got a check and replaced in three weeks. Not bad, considering Progressive had to wait 10 days to see if the bike will show up before paying out. I plan to add a camera system along with motion lights to the house. I won't go wireless because they all have reviews that mention weak signals and degraded pictures. The systems are cheap but you will need to change something or the crooks will be back.

If you want to go cheap, put a wireless baby monitor in your boat and listen to everything that is going on around the boat. I use it when I go to a motel and need my boat or trailer monitored. They are good for 1/4-1/2 mile away.

How about a pillow?

Before it gets too cold up there, just crawl under the cover and sleep in the boat with your choice of weapon close a hand. Someone else mentioned it, but the familar sound of a shell being racked in a shotgun will make most folks pee in their shorts.

Havent read all the replies yet, so forgive me if this has been covered. Although it varies state by state, but in general, your boat needs its own policy like any other motor vehicle, and therefore your HO policy will not cover any loss associated with the boat. Either way, your agent is right, you dont want to make a claim to your HO unless its really really major.

Sorry to hear, hope it all gets worked out. its bad enough to have something stolen, even worse when they tear it up to get is out.

A wire running from the house to the boat should be a dead give away to STAY AWAY from the boat. Its probably the easiest to use and lets people know that boat is being monitored.

You could also tie in a wireless sensor to your existing alarm system if you have a wireless receiver already on your home alarm. Only issue with the wireless devices is communication if your receiver is far away from the driveway. It might be hit or miss with the signal and cause more trouble than its worth. If you can have a wireless receiver installed inside the garage your golden. I don't like wireless motions as much as hardwire ones, but they do work.

thankfully, I've got a great neighborhood. I think most of the time these things happen with people cruzin around 'looking' -not necessarily from the surrounding area. I won't leave my boat out anymore. Storage is 1 mile away and I won't take the chance for an extra 15 minutes it takes to lock it up.
Would love to catch someone trying though. Rope, tree, several ant mounds I can collect torture from, and a call to police about an hour later.

All it would take is a person with a slight bit of knowledge and they could shunt loop that exposed alarm wire in less than 30 seconds and it would be disabled, hence the reason alarm companies go to great pains to conceal all wiring when possible. Wireless today is way more robust than in the past. Even with that my 10 year old wireless sensor still works up to 100' without issues.

BBQ sorry to hear this bro. I really am and i feel your pain, they worst thing about things getting stolen is you actualy feel violated. Also it breaks all your trust with your neighbors and friends in the area. You start questioning anyone who asks about the boat or the stereo or who watches when your working on the boat. I personaly have kept my boat out all summer on the RV pad and we ahve construction going on but i make it a point to let those people know i have 3 dogs, 2 of them are larger and 1 is a Doberman. It also helps that my bedroom window is right at the Rv pad.

As for the insurance claim id make the claim. So what if they drop you, get the boat insured threw a boat company like Newty and Berg said. Think of all the money you spend on insurance and never get it back. of course they dont want you to file a claim thats money out of there pockets now.

As for securing the boat.

@Millerdad in Hillsboro, brother i sure hope you plan to keep your boat at your home over the winter. Some reasoning here. Even though that storage company is 24/7 and live on site, do you think they would notice your boat broken into if the cover wasnt messed up? Nope. Also never trust leaving yuor boat outside all winter in our climate with the constant rain and tendency to freeze at the last minute. Lastly its a great peace of mind knowing the boat is safe each day when you walk out in the garage.

Back to BBQ

There is no best way to protect your boat bother. You can cain the wheels together, pull the pin on the swing tongue, lock the coupler, alarm the boat, tarp it and tie it closed, shrink wrap it, you can even sleep in it. Trust me your boat was not a random hit. It was planed and it was scoped out bro. Dont take this personaly but you flaunted the stereo 1 to many times at your home. This means playing it to loud, playing it while cleaning it, leaving the speakers in plain view on the tower. All this is realized by the teenagers and younger men in the area. They know this gear is expensive and easy to sell.

This is another reason to watch you loved ones closly and your enemies closer.

This is also another reason to have the quick disconnects on your Exiles because you take them off and put them indoors and then people dont think its worth breaking into as much.

Lastly the only deterent from true theft is not having anything to steel to begin with, and since most of us arnt going to live like that then you have to have insurance you can trust as much as you can afford with in reason.

I might get some hate for this post but its the honest truth. I have had my car broke into 1 time, after that i learned. Keep things looking stock, dont flaunt your stuff and never ever brag to the neighbors about what you have. They will mention it to someone and you will get scoped out.

Last bit of advise i have for you is for flaunting, this means to me never crank the stereo in your boat or cars near your homes, or when you are in parking lots about to go shopping. This is the most popular place to have your stuff stolen.

I know all to well about this growing up in Tucson being so close to the boarder, you learn all the tricks to steel and not be stolen from. So fare i havnt had anything stolen in 20+ years.

That's what double end of line resistors are for. You can't jut shunt the zone and call it a day. If ULC installations in banks and vaults call for double end of line than it must be safe enough for a driveway boat

For the most part I think companies go to great deals to conceal wring more for the fact that clients don't like to see ugly wire running along their baseboard and door frames.

I agree that Wireless is pretty good in today's standards but still has short comings. I will always try to run a wire where I can.

Hey Mandley,
Definitely no hate for your post, you made some solid points that we can all learn from. However (for the record).....A few of the presumptions you made are not at all correct. These very points make me feel a bit screwed that the dirtbags chose me.

#1) I have never, repeat NEVER cranked the system while in my driveway (not even once!). In fact, the system has only been run at or near max volume 1 time on land period, and that was at the install shop 165 miles from where I live. I rarely if ever even play it at home because my neighbors are elderly (and because I don't want people knowing what I have). I honestly do not flaunt the system.

#2) I always always disconnect my XM7s and tuck them away inside in a safe spot. I even disconnect them if the boat is going to sit at a !restaurant parking lot, friends house, etc...for just a few hours. I am really not a flaunting kind of guy! (and I have a touch of paranoia about keeping the boat stereo safe).

One point I will concede is that this was not a random hit. Our neighborhood has had an unfortunate rash of theft and car prowls over the past few weeks. In fact, 4 houses were hit on the same night my stuff was taken. The bastards are methodically casing and hitting people that have valuables. The job was definitely done by someone who knew what they were doing and had planned the job.

Anyway, I digress. What's done is done. Hopefully the @$$holes get whats coming to them. I'm a firm believer in karma.

I am almost certain when you were thinking of having your Exile system done Brian added in a quote/ fee for me to come pick up your boat and redeliver it to you but you and him worked out a different deal. Not positive that was you but pretty sure lol.

Yea i can say i dont always remove my speakers, now i have 6 of them. At my last house we always removed them due to lowering the tower and putting her in the garage. Now that we have the new house and an RV pad i dont always remove them. The bolts are so tight it takes a wrench to remove them and it helps that theres only 18 houses in my section. Less then 2000 people in my whole town now.

It really does suck this happened to you and i would never wish this to happen to anyone.

I'm finally starting to get over the whole monetary part of this (sort of). Still pissed about the invasion of my privacy/property though.

Hey Mandley, thinking strongly that if I do a re-install I should have Exile do it. Then you guys would really know what's in there!

Exile doesnt do installs but whats happened in the past is I do the installs lol. Im sure Brian will cut you good rate on a new system. Word is im pulling everything out of my boat this winter. If i do its will be like all the other gear that moves threw my boat it gets resold as a Demo product.

I'm not familar with your system but if you bolt the speakers on I would consider some type of odd ball bolt heads so it would require someone to have a special tool to remove them.

Security screws could be used, but those bits can be purchased as well, but its not likely someone will be carrying one in their arsenal.
