I have an 01 Outback LS that takes on water from the shaft thru hull area. I am wondering if anyone knows how to remove the floor panel above the shaft log packing nut to tighten it, as I'm guessing that this will solve the problem.

broncogeoff,

brian had to help me witht his one.

first remove the clam shell and set it aside. really fun when doing it on the lake. next there are two long screws at the corners of the floorboard. they are in the carpet so you just have to feel around and finally get them. just a word of advice, go ahead and buy extra #12 3 inch machine screws before you remove the old ones.

good luck,

Thanks for the quick replies. I will try pulling the floor panel today.

After removing all the screws from the rear floor panel I am able to move it about a 1/2 inch before it seems to jam on the base of the rear seat. If I keep pulling it or moving it the base of the seat flexes and makes crackling noises. It appears that the carpet is what is catching. Are there any other fasteners or tricks to opening this panel? Do the exhaust hoses have to be removed from the engine? The packing gland is definately to source of water in my bilge so I need to get it tightened. Thanks for any help.

broncogeoff,

were there only two screws close to the engine. i had to tilt the floor panel forward and then pull. mine seemed to stick to the carpet the first time but after that it was much easier. however i have to use a small hammer to push the panel back into place.

let me know how it goes.

If it does not fit, force it - if it breaks, it needed replacing anyway!

besides sd2 advice, try to remove the seat base screws located on the left and right of the removeable panel. this will give you the needed play to remove the panel without damaging the seat base.

I got the panel out, thanks for the help. It just involved a lot of jimmying the floor panel and less direct pulling. I was able to tighten the packing nut and will be dropping it in the lake tomorrow to check that it stopped the water from flowing in. Thanks again.
