Any watch collectors on here?

I've always loved watches, and I've got several, nothing too extravagant, but L just gave me a Rolex Datejust (my first Rolex) as an engagement gift, and I must say, I can see how this hobby is going to be addicting (and expensive, lol)!

Since I've gotten it I've really had fun reading up on the various factoids about this watch, and others.

Blue anniversary dial with Arabic numbers, Jubilee band, and Fluted Bezel. She actually let me pick out exactly what I wanted (the Model was her idea, the colors and options were me.)

I have an awesome watch that is shapped like a Stanley tape measure - even says "Stanley" in the middle of a yellow circle - just like the tape measures.

Think I got it for sending in three Cheerios box tops.

You know, come to think of it my favorite watch is a Seiko I have that my wife bought me for college graduation. It was only like a $400 watch but it looks nice and performs flawlessly. Plus it carries a sentimental value that can't be replaced. She had been saving for it for a few months and surprised me with it along with a butcher cut filet she had cooked for me the night of my last class. I out punted my coverage fellas.

I to like a few of the Tags. But when you start talking about close to $10K for a watch, I just see too many other toys I could put 10K in. I don't even have a suit that costs near that.

I have a brother in law who is a president and COO of a company, a brother in law who is a surgeon and a nephew who is a corporate CPA

One day they all went out and bought $30,000 Rolex's.

I just don't comprehend this.

Just way too much over the top for me.

My $8.00 walmart watch (that has no band) keeps as accurate time as theirs.

I don't collect watches (in fact, I don't collect anything) but I do wear a Tag Heuer chrono that my wife got me for my 40th birthday that I wear every day. It's by far the nicest watch I have ever owned, and the most durable.

Wow, wicked nice watch!! I, much like Ed, tend to buy cheap watches as they tend to get destroyed frequently if I wear them, so I really don't bother to wear a watch anymore... I probably couldn't bring myself to wear an uber expensive watch like that, I'd just be too afraid I'd smash it into a wall or railing, car door perhaps, anything with enough mass to make a substantial impact against...

Ian, very nice. My wife and i exchanged Tag Heuer for our wedding gifts to each other. very nice and very practical. can wear it with a suit or wear it surfing...

I read this thread when ian first posted it, and was in a training class the other day daydreaming about boats and this popped into my head. I did a quick survey of the room. 15 people, aged 22-54. only 4 were wearing watches and they were all over 45..

look at the selection of watches at any mass retailer or jewelry store and you will see another industry that the cellphone has affected. heck, I can't even remember the last time I put a watch on. I'm guessing it's been 12 or 13 years. Have a box in the closet somewhere with a dozen or so(including a real nice casio digital with a plastic band) that haven't seen daylight since. maybe someday my winnie the pooh timex will be a collectors item..

I too am very hard on watches - I tend to bang it on everything. So previous to my Tag, a watch would typically not make it a year. And that's why I made the durable comment - my Tag has taken a beating and there are a few marks on the case to show for it. But it's still working perfectly and the glass has not a mark on it. Not sure what kind of glass it is but it's definitely some very hard stuff!

Its probably a sapphire crystal; they are super hard and most high end watch makers use 'em. I feel off balance when I don't have a watch on. I think its more of a jewelry thing these days, rather than a practical way to tell the time. I still use my watch to tell the time, but I also use my phone (which is seemingly attached permanently to my hand, lol.)

That's a very good observation and consistent with what our 15 year old son reports, that no one in school wears watches anymore. I am a person that is a stickler for being on time so I am always looking at my watch. I don't want to have to reach into my pocket every time I want to know what time it is.

Crystal, that's the word I was looking for that was escaping me! For me, it's definitely a practically thing as I don't wear any jewelry other than my watch and wedding ring.

I haven't worn a watch in ... well since cell phones started showing time as said. I don't like them on my wrist, especially when it's hot out. And since I'm outside as much as possible that stupid looking pale (translucent) band around my wrist looked pretty stupid to me, especially since i'm always very dark in the spring - fall ;/ Now it's not to say I don't own a nice watch because I do, a very limited edition Bulova that probably cost my wife quite a bit 10 years ago that I only wear to special occasions ... about six times to be exact. I do own one other, a 1920's Elgin still in the original case in mint condition that was my grandfathers given to him by my grandmother. Still has the original foil price tag of $37.50 in the case. Worth way more than that now but it's quite priceless to me.

My brother has lived in Western Austrailia for around 12 years now and has always been enamored with watches for some reason. Anyway he was taught watch and clock repair by an oldtimer there whom owned a shop. Since then he's been collecting valuable and rare broken watches from around the world, repairs them and sells them usually making a mint off each one. In Australia everything is super expensive compared to our prices and it's easy to sell anything vintage US there.

The Luscian Piccard was a gift in 1990 and Benrus a gift in 1989.

I too love watches. I am currently wearing a breitling bentley with the white face, i am hoping to give my wife a breathing for our ten year next fall.
Amazing how durable they are, the face on mine is huge and have never worried about cracking it, and it looks good surfing

My current wish list is a Patek Phillipe.

exactlly - and most people just turn on their cell phone to find out what time it is.

I don't wear or carry a watch. We are constantly being exposed to the time which makes having one sorta useless

We see the time displayed in our cars, on our computers, in front of businesses, on phones, on GPS receivers, etc.

If I didn't have a small hand held GPSR for backpacking, I would carry an analog watch in my survival kit.

That way you can always tell where south is

One of my buddies has the Bentley with a black face. That thing weighs like 5 pounds, wayyy too big for me; I have a ~6" wrist, so anything bigger than 40mm looks ridiculous, lol. But, those are absolutely killer watches, maybe I can wear a womens, haha.

Ed, Here is what you need brotha. I believe the Navy Seals use these.....This is the watch that will serve it's purpose whether you are in the super market or swimming through the 2.5 M part of the triathlon. Or when you get finished wakesurfin and then jump back in the boat to dry off and chill out with. ........ You know what I mean Ed.... chhhiiiiiiiiiilllllllll ooouuuuuuuuuutttt...... lol..............Its a very versatile watch. And plus when you start rippin on that Mahogany SG like I am about to do, you dont worry about scratching the beautiful finish....

When I'm camping, I don't even care what time it is. I wake up with the sun, I eat when I'm hungry, I set up camp when I'm tired. I got a Garmin Etrex and a compass and that's all I need.


For running, I have a Garmin Forerunner, GPS based training partner.

I hate swimming :)

I'm a collector of BAD WATCH KARMA..
I have been cursed ever since I found a watch in a hotel 10 years ago and kept it. It was long lost behind a piece of furniture. I am pondering a sacrifice to the watch gods to regain some good watch karma. Just sent one of my watches back in for replacement this month.. 2nd time this year. killed a cheap one wakeboarding while good one was off at repair.. and other good one wont stay clasped... gotta send it off..

Think I am going to learn the sundial and give up on watches.. And to think about buying a real expensive watch?????? no way... I'd crack it smashit, lose it, or something..

Not sure what happened to my reply but I actually do not personally own an SG. A friend does. BUT, I am looking to buy my father one and have been in the process of looking and saving for a while now.

He used to have a 74? SG when he was rockin in those weird clothes that you fellas used to wear and has always wanted another, but just never bought one for himself. But now he thinks he likes the sound of an old Strat that his local guitar guy let him play better. It changes too often. We, although him more than I are guitar buffs so their are many different we like.


So, not to completely hi jack this thread.....Who has some of these nice Britlins??? (sp?) Id like to see em... I think I am going to start carrying a classic time piece as well as a pocket square.

Depends on what songs he wants to play. Some require the sound of the Strat, some require the sound of a Gibson. If your into guitars, you gotta have both!

You can pick up a new SG Standard with hard shell case for about $1200

A SG Special with hard shell case goes around $700.

Dawg, went to the guitar store yesterday with the intentions of purchasing a Gibson SG Standard.

As soon as I picked it up, I hated it!

Felt like a toy guitar. Just put it back on the rack without playing it
