Welp, I have been trying to get some pics together since the beginning of June and I finally got around to it. Here's what I ended up doing:

2 pair Exile Sxt65's
1 Pair Exile Xm7's
3 Pair Exile Sx65's
1 Exile Xi12
Exile 1500.1 for sub
Exile 800.4 for Sx65s
Exile Harpoon for Tower
Exile Throttle Box
Custom Build Sub Enclosure
Krypt KMA-4200
HSE
Hidden Hardwired Inverter
Dual Chargers
Dedicated 3 battery Stereo Bank
Led's to light everything up inside
Custom Tower Led's
Custom Lightbar for night surfing

Hopefully I will have an 800.4 on the way to split the load from the Harpoon on the tower. I have been working a ton with Brian in doing a "Texas Heat Test" to see what it takes to shut the Harpoon down, what levels, how long etc. As a result, the 800.4 will be the last addition.

Here we go...lot's of pics.

The amps. The amp racks are stud mounted and are spaced off of the rack by 1/4". The rack has a large cutout behind each amp that allows the backside to be completely open for airflow all around the amps. There is also a small external fan mounted to push the hot air away from the amp. Evidently though, it's not quite enough, enter the 2nd 800.4

Nice job, looks clean! I'd thought about doing the same thing with leds on the tower last year but nothing ever came of it

Having an inverter is nice to have. I hardwired a Xantrex 1000w unit in that very same place three years ago and i'm glad i did.

I hate looking at pics of peoples installs. Makes me want to teat mine apart and redo it! It took me two weeks or worked 7-8 hours a day on mine to get it how it is and it looks horrible compared to your install! Wish I was more crafty.

Top notch install. It's ironic that the simpler and cleaner the finished product, the more work it took and on that basis, I'm sure this one took a ton of effort. It definitely paid off though.

Question: what do you guys use the inverter for?

We keep a electric air mattress pump (coleman brand from walmart) on board to blow up floats, rafts, tubes, you name it. Mine is an 800 watt, I have even ran my small shopvac off of it while on a beach camping trip. The electric air pump works a ton better than one that we had that was DC. This thing doesn't mess around! I was inspired by KG last year when we went out with them and he had one stowed away and pulled it out to plug in his margarita machine. Love having it!

Lets get some updated pics of the additional harpoon.

First test of the Exile Hybrid (4 sxt 65's and 2 xm7's) being pushed by 2 harpoons sounded GREAT last weekend!!

Just wanted to add the last update....after the Texas heat shut down the Harpoon a few times we decided that another amp needed to be added to the Hybrid tower setup. So, now the 6 Towers are spilt over 2 Harpoons.

I've got to say, Wow! The difference is amazing. It sounded great before, super clear, extremely loud....but now its a whole new sound. Before, while clear, it had a touch of the "maxed out" sound. Now, the towers scream and you have no feeling of the system tapping out, if that makes sense. Both surf and board range was improved. Board range was a significant difference. Before, you could hear the music, but it was just there if you wanted it. Now, you can't avoid it, there id no doubt to what you are listening to, loud and clear.

Overall, we are thrilled with the entire setup!

that would be fun, we did a few lake trips this year but we kinda dont see the point in driving far, paying for the fuel, and settling for rough water when we can just ride on better quality water thats only 2 hours away. that being said we will probably join yall at broken bow one weekend, just make sure you give some advanced notice!

I'll second Dusty's comments on the difference in the hybrid setup. With 1 harpoon it was nice and loud, easy to hear and such but it didn't sound like there were truely 6 of the best tower speakers up there. Add the second harpoon and it was day and night difference. Now it sounds like a dominant system and gives you the sound at 80 ft that has you looking around wondering if it should be turned down (at 3/4 volume).

That being said .... My cans and speakers have already been pulled and will be getting an update over the winter. Now I just have to decide what to go with ... :)

Looking sweet man. So tell em how much of a difference do you really think its making in sound. I mean we had the same tower set up and i can be honest, i have told a few people mines not as loud as last year and something has to change. I told Brian its gonna have to be looked at and tested this winter because im not happy with it like i was when running the 4 XM7s. I agree in that it could be the amp not supplying enough power but then again i really hate to try and fish a second set of lines threw my tower. I had to refish the ones in there this year and it was a pain lol. Plus since i went full wireless look im not sure if theres room in my cross tubes to fit another pair of 14g lines.

Did you deddicate the other Harpoon for 1 set of XM7s or are you running a Left and Right Harpoon? Explain it to me Lucy.

Why would you need to run additional wire, how are the XM7's and SXT65 wired?

dusty2221
10-24-2011, 10:03 PM
For my application I had to rerun new wire also. I have 3 pairs of 12 gauge running up my tower, and none are visible at the top. I wired mine with the xm 7s on 1 harpoon as a left and right. the 4 sxt's are ran off of the other harpoon as a left and right. The harpoon with the xm 7s on it has the throttlebox, which makes a noticeable difference. To make it a bit easier I used wire that had a jacket around the 3 pairs keeping them all together. Also rewiring it allowed me to pull all of the wire straight to the back bar rather than puzzling through the front to get to the back.

As far is difference in sound, kg explained it perfectly. before it was good you could hear it no problem, but now it's totally different. You almost feel like it should be turned down. If you feel like you're lacking, definitely add a second harpoon

Interesting to hear you say that MMandley, regarding the 4 xm7s vs your current hybrid. It only makes sense but still, i was curious about it. I am looking to do a new tower setup this winter so was interested in Dustys setup, aside from just being buds.

The first time I heard his, off one harpoon, i was kinda left meh. Don't get me wrong it was loud and sounded good but if i put 6 speakers on my tower i want the power to 1. just be ridicoulsy loud and 2. be able to outmatch just about any boat I see. So after the first time i was behind his i got curious on how 4 xm7s and 2 sxt65s would sound, being that I wakeboard more whereas dusty surfs more. However, once the second harpoon went in its like it just clicked. Bam, theres the wow factor. 2nd amp to the tower is def the ticket to wow factor on the hybrid setup.

Gentlemen - If its not loud enough, step up to 4 XM9's. They will blow you out of the water! bigger drivers, very linear sound field. More expensive. For the surfer, I think the Hybrid is really wow impressive sound. For the Wakeboarder - XM9's are wow ow wow.

More importantly make sure you have some big power and a subwoofer that can keep up with a big time tower speaker setup.

Cheers!

-Brian

ps: KG; did you just redo your tower last season? I've spoke to so many guys about boats it makes my head spin. I thought you put some kyrpts up there. Whatch thinking... why change? If I got my info wrong, no disrespect. was just curious.

Yea, I did. Then you went off and sold Dusty a killer tower setup. LOL. At brostock I could just feel him wishing he had his setup. Plus we have a pretty heavy wakeboard cove (close to 10 wakeboats) during the heat of the summer. We occasionally hang out with a group of them and my music always got trumped by a Wetsounds 3some setup. Plus, I'm just ready for the stereo stuff to be finished.

I've been looking/thinking alot about a Rev 10 or XM9 setup. Of course it all has to go through the boss and its the "more expensive" part that is the hangup. LOL. However, after a weekend of mine and Dustys boat being together she said she thought we needed something more on the tower ... so we will see. My cans are sold and I'll be looking to sell the 4 Krypt speakers and likely the JL amps that pushed them.

The thing about me is ill tell ya straight and i dont think i ever once said my hybrid was louder then my 4xm7s lol. Now at surf distance they sound amazing and i have no real complaints except they really need more volume. I think maybe part of the problem is my in boat setup is so loud and clean the tower is battleing them. IDK maybe i need to aim the tower up a little more idk. I can say it was never lacking enough over the summer to make me skip a day on the lake to goto Exile and have it looked at. I did get the system retuned mid summer and that made a huge difference in my in boat sound.

I wasnt sure what to point the finger at as my entire tower was new this year, and all my amps had been replaced new this year also. Only thing not new was the cabin speakers. This next season im not sure what gear im running like i said in a previous post. I might be ripping the entire system out of the boat and go with some else new and improved who knows lol. Luckly i have a standing order from my other half, thats Go Big or Go Home. She will tell me if she thinks out boat isnt the best sounding and loudest on the lake and when she surfs, everyone knows theres a Mexican in the water because she prefers to listen to Shakira and like its all in Spanish LOL.

When we have done the hybrid we definitely used dual amplifiers. I just don't like loading any amplifier down to 1.33 ohms unless it is an amplifier that is biased specifically for that load and purpose. You will get a little more overall power when you drop the load from 2.0 to 1.33 ohms but you will not have as much power to each indivdual speaker as you did before. Why? Because amplifiers are not like resistors or DC lightbulbs after an unlimited supply and do not exactly follow Ohm's Law.
So you can run another 2-channel or bridge a 4-channel to the single pair of HLCDs within the hybrid. The bridged 4-channel is equal to or greater power for that purpose and more cost-effective. And, don't forget that the second tower amplifier affords you more control on the fly between the HLCD and surf speakers for different scenerios whether at rest, surfing or wakeboarding.
Rather than a hybrid consisting of a mix of six 6.5" speakers, you have the option of going with four larger 8" HLCDs like the XM9s. You have a slight edge in the collective surface area with the XM9s which directly equates to more output volume using the same amplifier power. Its less expensive to properly power without thermal issues. Fifty pair of 6.5" speakers don't play lower than a single pair. They just play louder. But a larger driver and pod with an inherent and lower midbass cut-off point will have a more robust midbass. And the larger HLCDs will have more lower midrange content. They simply sound much less like a typical HLCD as you go larger and there is less need for a hybrid mix to moderate the over the top treble of a smaller HLCD.
Both sound good and both play loud.
