View Full Version : Hot wire?

The cold start thread got me thinking: is there a way to hot wire the boat in the event you forget a key? I've only managed to get to a ramp without a key once in all my years of boating, and that was close to 10 years ago. I really don't see any reason it would happen again as I never remove the key, but I guess I was just curious more than anything. That being said.....can it be done?

A screwdriver is all it takes to hotwire a boat. Because it's so easy I have a spare key I keep hanging up under the dash in one of those waterproof buoy keychains that has the hidden compartment. And yes I've used it a few times as I don't keep my keys in the boat.

i keep a spare key hanging under the dash on a wire, ready to be used in the key gets lost, misplaced. i store the boat in the garage so i never take the key out.

i think you can hot wire by pulling a couple wires from the back of the ignition and jumping across them, the screwdriver Razz is talking about. somebody will have to tell you which wires to hit, i can't do that.

^^ Ditto that and nicely hidden. Complete with glove box and fuel cap thing too. I've actually watched guys touch their tires to the water, stop, pull everything out of every compartment hunting for what appeared to be the keys, stomp around cursing and swearing and then go squealing out of the parking lot. Too funny but not for them...

^^^ Yeah, how is it done so one doesn't fry the electronics or ones self accidentally?

And it isn't real without pictures ;-)

As a secondary question, can these iginition keys be made anywhere like Home Depot or Lowes maybe? If so I might have ot get a spare made and hang it under the dash just in case the dog swipes the key and loses it in the lake.

As a sidebar I have had good success with speaker magnet and twine when truck keys were tossed into teh lake by the wife (bad throw... way bad throw)

Really wish someone had answered this as I came up to do a little "work" in the water and I forgot my key and SPARE at home. #sucks

Jumper the always hot wire to the hot in run wire then touch the start wire to the always hot wire. Baddaboom you're running baby. These ignitions are similar to a riding lawnmower no real technology here

And now anyone who has access to the world wide web knows how to steal your boat.

Dang. Already left. Weatherman said it was a 60% chance of thunderstorms. Not a drop fell from all the sunshine.

Jealous BC I was drinking a fruity beverage that came in a bucket while overlooking the boats come in. #hater (as the kids say)

Yeah, but how many people really have a simple understanding of simple 12v wiring?

Hmm? Hmm?

Never show 'em what's behind the big, green curtain! :)

Just messing with you while passing the time on the plane ride home.
