Tow Rig Dilemma

the tahoe Z71 is currently my tow rig. I'd like for the tundra to be my new tow rig. the warden says we still need the tahoe for the third row set ( 3 kiddos still at home) so right now I don't have her blessing to move fwd with the buy. go figure, a women with some sense!

Bought a 2010 Tundra last fall too use as my tow rig. Best truck I've ever owned!!!!! There isn't a half ton truck on the market that compares!!!!

Yeah you can't beat the storage for a 100 a month. Concrete slab, electricity with lights in the interior unit. Can't complain at all.....

@ hooterville I am amazed at the ease the tundra tows my lsv. It's like the boat isn't even hooked up. Now gas mileage is another thing but tremendously smooth and all the power in the world.

100 a month? maybe when the boat is paid for i can slurge on storage! mine is like 35 a month and i have electricity and a light, but it is gravel floors and its not really sealed very good from the elements i dont think.

Not to highjack this thread with a long truck discussion, but in doing some research a majority of the parts and assembly of the tundra is done in the US. I believe since 2007. Ford and Chevy are importing more and more parts to stay competitive, and many GM products are now built or assembled in Canada, but can still put the sticker on them saying made in America. Not sure why. Bottom line is Toyota supports many US workers and makes a great product that I found fit my family and I best.

of course the parts for the tundra mainly come from here. they dont even sell tundras in japan i dont think and they dont have v8 engines there. the tundra was pretty much designed specifically for the US market to take market share away from the big 3. but the profits from the truck still go overseas. theres not much you can buy period besides some tools where all the money stays state side. but i made a vow never to own a foreign vehicle and i did not want a dodge or chevy but i cant afford a ford :-(

your toureg has a v10 AND twin turbos?

and i was mainly referring to things such as a caddy ctsv versus a mercedes amg. both have 4 piston front calipers but the mercedes, if you take it apart, has like 20 more pieces that come out of it that offer no benefit

Yeah she has twin turbos. TDI = Turbo Direct Injection.

I have been working on and owning Euro cars for over 30 years (Owned Opels, BMWs, a Porsche, VWs). BMW and VW are pretty straight forward and actually easy to work on. Now Mercedes that is a different animal and I would NOT own one of those. Not to be a snob but I have owned 3 Chevy trucks too. The best was the Chevy Avalanche, if only I hadn't of ordered it with a 4:11 rear axle ratio, talk about a gas hog, but my wife and I think it was the best Chevy we ever owned.
The best of ALL of them (fun factor here) was the Porsche 911. My wife and I will get another one someday. I guess when I pay off the Moomba! :)

Nothing too exciting - 98 GMC K1500, but low miles and clean. K&N Intake, exhaust, AirRaid spacer -but still huffs and puffs to pull the Moomba up big hills. Pulling the hills on the freeway trying to hold the speed limit or more can get really noisy and drink a lot gas, but then again our boating season is only a few months of the year... I think I'll look into a performance chip or tuner before I look into a bigger truck (and the big payments that go with them). I'm not much of a diesel fan so I think my next pick would be an F350 Crew with the V-10.

I never thought about diesel engines either until my wife got a VW diesel Jetta. Fast and 40mpg. So I spent 3 months looking for a V-10 5.0 liter diesel (what you want) VW Touareg TDI and less than a minute after driving it I was sold (Super Fast and you don't even know the boat is behind you). Both my wife and I will never own a gas vehicle again. No that isn't right, the next car we will buy will be a 2007 Porsche 911. You know when we pay the Moomba off! ;)

LOL-we did use the ramp--just had to keep going till the boat floated. Sand is so compacted I didnt even use the 4 wheel drive. Lakes were down about 4-5 feet that summer. Thats my local lake-no salt water for that boat

That is funny! We live in Florida and sand is everywhere, your yard, the beach the the unpaved roads. We have to purchase rocks at a pet store to put in the turtle tank we bought my daughter!!! When it rains here people that live on "dirt roads" just drive home no problems. It also allows the water to just drain right throught it so an hour after it rains your yard is dry again. So this summer we go visit my father in Indiana and while there we went to visit some old covered bridges. I decided that I wanted to walk under one to look at those huge old oak boards. I walk down the bank and see that there is sand and not mud under the bridge so thinking nothing of it I stepped onto the sandy bank. WHOA!!!! I went down to my knees in that stuff and struggled really hard to get myself out. Then I had to alert my wife and kids "don't step on the quick sand!!!! :p

How much did the level kit cost? And how much was labor to have it installed. I see a lot more trucks now a days with the level kit than a 4 or 6 inch body lift etc. Seems like maybe the way to go..

On the topic of foreign made...I had no idea the toureg was such a beast. My opinion of them has always been a small to mid size suv not capable of pulling 4500 lbs of boat. I've been very educated so far and my eyes have been opened. The wife drives an 08 BMW 335i and I have not paid one penny in maintenance in 2.5 years and will continue to pay nothing until well after it's paid off. I love foreign!!!

not sure on the fords but my 2.5" level kit for the ram was about 100 and took me about 3 hrs to install myself. Clears the 35" tires with little rubbing, but taking it offroad would not work as the wheels i got are just a little to wide

Jpetty goto the local tire shop, Les Shuab or another big one like Discount tire. Dont go to the dealer for this.

I got it installed at the shop on my F150 for 225 and my F350 came with it. The actual kit is pretty cheap, its just a spacer. All they do is compress the springs and install it above the spring.

This is the cheapest kit out there and a real bang for your buck.

I personaly think all 4x4 should come factory with these.

the cognito is a much more complex lift than the rough country. if you go more that 2" on a chevy it will not be level and you will have to lift the rear aswell.

if you are going to go through that much work and your willing to spent that much $$$ on a 3" lift then you should check out the rancho 4"

I have an F-250, programmed, leveled in the front 2.5", raised in the rear 1", airbags for towing, cat and muffler gone. We love it. Ash snapped this while camping last week.

2500's have a torsion bar suspension, a 1500 has coil overs. for just a leveling kit you need the torsion keys. a 2500 should be able to fit 35"s with just a 2" leveling kit

I have been a little leary of just the keys due to the fact it will affect the angle of OEM control arms and other stuff I don't understand. The shock brackets make it look a little more doable than some of the other keys I've seen.

Truck is a 07.5.

You can get away with the key adjustment or replacement on the torsion bar suspension as long as you don't go crazy. A couple inches lift at best or it will ride like a horse and buggy and wear out front end parts quickly.

My truck is older but has the same style of suspension. I did about 2" lift in the front with torsion keys, 2.5" lift blocks in the rear. New longer shocks all around. Angles on steering, axles, etc. are ok but I would not go any further. Ride is stiffer but not bad. Still feels like a truck.

If you want all the gearhead details on what works and what doesn't try the full size chevy forum or GM truck club. The torsion bar lift is one of the most common mods to these GM trucks there is from what I've read.

i had a ranger edge with torsion bar front suspension and i put load leveing rear shocks on it with coil springs and it was way low in the front after that. i crawled under it and cranked on the torsion bars and got about an inch and half out of it and i could fit 31s under it. thats good for a ranger. rode pretty rough though but nothing wore out or broke

I recommend doing a spindle lift whatever kind of lift you go with. BDS and Cognito are both spindle lifts and best for GM/Chevy. Cognito 4-6" will clear 35's with a fender mod, same with BDS 4.5" kit. Those kits will clear 35's for your 2007.5. If your just looking to lvl it, go with Cognito UCA level kit. Quality comes with a price and with a HD truck its worth it.

IMO rancho and rough country are junk, some have good luck with them, others don't. I'm one of those that have seen nothing but problems from those brands.

OK, now don't laugh..... Yes that is a pic of a 2008 Tahoe Hybrid..... Bought it this year with only 8,000 miles on it. I am originally from Texas so I was embarrassed as hell driving this thing after trading in my '07 Avalanche for something with third row seating..... Made that decision after having to drive two cars to get everyone to the lake. However the reason I bought this one was that all the "SUV" vehicles I test drove (took the boat with me to the dealer for tow tests) this one towed better than my Avalanche and the others with the 5.3L and got better mileage while doing it. I couldn't beleive it, but it has a full sized 6.0L V8 along with the electric motor. I still can't believe how well it tows. I have averaged 16mpg towing at 65mph. Anyway just wanted to share.

my truck claims it gets 10 mpg while towing on the hwy but i think it is lying 25 gallon tank x 10 mpg = 250 mile range. i barely get 200 miles per tank. it also says i get 19 on the hwy not towing but everything im manually calculate it at the pump its more like 16-17 :-(

4.86 for DIESEL?? #$*! That is absurd! I think being 10-20 cents more than gasoline here is stupid, diesel should be cheaper than gas. But I am not surprised with how well the hybrid tows, that electric assist motor has a lot of torque. You know trains are power by electric motors for that reason.

08 nice rig man i woudnd be ashamed of it. True is the new Mini Van for soccor moms lol had to go there LOL. Honeslty though its a solid SUV. I would get rid of the sticker on the lower rocker panels.

@RD when they do the milage for towing you notice how they never say what or how much the towed item weighed? LOL Getting 10mpg towing is pretty typical and 16-17 is typical in full size truck. Thats what my F150 also got when towing our boat.

We dont have much flat road out here so its hard to really say what i get towing but it ranges 11 to 14 towing 15 city and 20 hwy. Course the 6.0 Powerstroke isnt known for its milage its known for being a work horse. Doesnt seen to matter if im pulling a 2K Reinell boat or 13K boat i still seam to get 10 to 14 miles per gallons towing all depends on the amount of hills i drive threw lol.

I went back and forth forever, just ask dusty. Ordered the cognito kit with bilsteins and a couple steering goodies. Hoping to have installed this week and I'll throw some pics up and post on ride difference.

Here is a pic. It clears the 33's with no problems. I ended up with the front measuring the same as the back but not looking right so I went ahead and added ride rite bags in the rear to get just a smidge higher and help with towing.

I bought the truck with chrome rockstars and had them powdercoated so none of the plastic bolts are on it and im currently running without the centercaps. Best shots I have on me of the wheels right now ...

That is to funny. I had forgotten how much I hated painted wheels when I was younger. Me and my GF way back then got into a huge argument because she wanted to paint her hub caps white to match her car and I threw a big fit and told her I would never ride in her car again if she did it......
