Shred Stixx or Lake Wakes

I'm looking at either the Shred Stixx Thresher or the LakeWakes 4.8. Any insight as to the better board? I know the SS is a bit more, but if it's a better board I don't mind paying the difference. Looks like there is no longer a Moomba discount with LW - the price listed on the site is what it is. It's a dang good price, though if I'm spending $400 plus I'd rather get the better board from the get go, whichever it may be. I know several of you have both or have ridden both, so I want to hear the reviews.

Go with the Shredd Stixx.

Jerry Price has been surfing the west coast and designing boards for a hell of a long time now.

If he doesn't personnaly like the design and shape of the board, it doesn't get made.

He also has a stable of team riders whose reputations depend on Jerry's designs.

Jerry has also donated a couple of boards to the Florida Skiers Choice Supra/Moomba Owners Reunions, that were raffled off to a couple of lucky Supra and Moomba Owners.

We should support those who support us!!

tell me the name of a well known pro surfer who endorses Lake Wakes, and I'll change my opinion.

Untill then, I think the only folks who promote Lake Wakes are the friends of the guy who makes them, and I don't think they know the difference between a board made for a professional and one made for a weekend warrior.

Met the builder a couple times--true.

What difference does it make whether a pro endorce's or not--usually they are getting a kickback of some kind for there endorcement--Im not-just a lowly little weekend warrior who enjoys his board.


Best advise is try and demo all the ones your considering. If your in florida I'd be happy to give you a pull on my Pirate board (named for the custom graphics) behind the my LSV

the difference is TL7 states: "I'd rather get the better board from the get go"

and there ain't no question that the Shredd Stixx IS the better board.

It's been tested and tested and has won many a tournament, resulting in some big checks for the guys who ride them.

Perhaps Lake Wakes may be there one day, but they ain't there yet.

Truth is - just like anything else in this world - you get what you pay for.

and yes - you are just a lowly little weekend warrior who enjoys his board.

I question it, but no bigy, just giving my feedback-and that could change if I ride a shred stixx-most likely wont happen and wont make a difference as im no pro.

Personally I think Mike Walker employes a better artist.


Jerry Price makes boards that surf well. They aren't meant to be hung on a wall.

Myself and my girl both ride Shred Stixx Thresher. Very fast board and easy to slash the top of the wake. Breaks loose very easy. We ride with the center fin off. It's a very durable board as well. We've been using ours for two full seasons now 3 days per week and not a single ding, dent, or scratch on it. The traction pad is also 100% in perfect condition after two seasons and lots of riding. I weigh 160 and my girl weighs 120 so we are definitely in the weight range of the board. The Thresher is very easy to pump if you fall back far and need to catch back up.

Thanks everyone - especially YDM. I knew you had a Thresher and were hoping you'd chime in. I'm actually heading to Austin this weekend to demo a JaMako and a Thresher. It's just too hard (for me anyway) to justify dropping that kind of $$ without a demo ride. I would imagine LW boards are just fine based on the threads I've seen on here, but I've bought a board before based on reviews (Ginsu) and been disappointed. Now I'm stuck with a board that I will never recoup my money on. My fault, I know, but fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

I agree about reviews, Only review that counts is your own--demo-demo-demo.

I passed on a surfboard based off someone here, later I had a change to ride one and then bought two of them--Hyperlite Broadcast's, still enjoy a ride on them

I demo'd a Thresher last year. Unfortunately I hated it. Another guy with me didnt like it either. The board just didnt seem to fit our style, and felt difficult to really ride. I def. have not ruled them out though for future purchases (just the Thresher is ruled out). Shred Stixx was great to work with though, they shipped it to me, let me demo, and let me send it back with zero issue, and the only out of pocket was for me to send it back.

I ended up ordering a custom Walker Project. While I absolutely love how my board rides, Walker Project has the worst customer service I have ever personally dealt with. I have 4 transactions as examples to back my statement. I've got no problem in saying I would love another Walker board, however, it will be bought from a person on the spot, NEVER ordered directly from them, which is unfortunate.

With all that said, I am absolutely dying to ride a Lakewakes board, along with the 2 other local buddies of mine. I thought I would be demoing one, but that didn't work out. I love the fact that Mark is on here posting, providing local demos to folks around him, he updates with new boards constantly on FB, offers group buys for forum members etc....and offers a 2 week turn around for a custom board. Find someone else that will do that. Walker will tell you 6 weeks, which actually means 12, if you are lucky. And if you are super lucky, like me, your custom board will show up looking like it missed a final smooth sanding, and type of cleanup prior to paint, damage that clearly happened after paint before packing............I better stop.

So yeah, if you can, demo all the Shred Stixx you can get your hands on. I'm hoping to get to ride the Hazen Elevation soon, and maybe someday a Lakewakes to determine my next purchase.

I just wish everyone was willing to send a demo board to potential customers. Pay the standard rental fee and provide a credit card for deposit. Seems you'd get more interest this way, not to mention word of mouth as demonstrated in the post by Dusty.

I live 60 miles north of Austin so I can demo a lot of boards since Austin is a huge wakesurfing area.

Of the two, I've only tried a Shred Stixx, but it was too big of a board for me (Jamako I think?)... so I'm not much help. I do want to demo the Thresher also. Not sure if there are any Lake Wake demos in the TX area, but if you're ever up in Austin, I believe Sail & Ski had a couple of Shred Stixx demos, so I would hit them up.

Lake Austin is basically a 22 mile long wide river. Weekdays is pretty good water all day but is really good before noon and right at sunset. Austin has Shred Stixx, ASC (Austin Surf Company), and Props. All are surf style boards. Lots of great local riders in the area and/or always coming through. Plus 9 out 10 boats in Austin is a $60k plus wake/surf boat. Every manufacturer is here pretty much except Sanger (great surf boat).

Unique looking boards, hand shaped locally in Austin. Wombat model gets great reviews. Ask Sail & Ski about Props, they were big into them a year ago. I rode one 2 weeks ago, very ocean board feel (I did ocean surf some years ago). Call South Austin Marine and see if they still Have Mike Doyle surf boards for demo, earlier this year they has several for demo only and then he hand makes one for you http://www.mikedoylecustomsurfboards.com/Main/WakeSurfBoards

We have a PROPS Pro model now. I love that board. We demo'd and bought from Sail and Ski last year, which is where I'll be Friday. I have a few boards reserved, so none of you dudes better steal them! I'm definitely going to see what all they have available, but it's my understanding that the Pro model is the fastest PROPS model there is, and that's what I'm looking for. I've almost nailed the 3 on the Pro, and I love it as long as there is plenty of weight in the boat. When it's just my wife and I, which is a lot of the time, it can bog down a bit. Plus all the vids I see of Chase and other surfers they are riding a board with a flat tail, where the Pro has more of a rounded tail.

At the end of the day I guess I'm just looking to waste money and buy more toys!
