Help! Engine won't start

Pretty new to doing maintenence on our 98 ouback 5.7 carburated Indmar. Had it for the last two years any havn't had any issues with it. After changing my fuel filter the enginge started right up and ran for about 2 min then died. Have not got it started since. I did not fill the new fuel filter with gas before installing it. I'm not getting any fuel at the Carb. I filled the new filter with gas and I put 12v straight to the fuel pump and it turns on but i'm still not getting any fuel at the carb. i've got a full tank of gas, no safety laniard on the throttle, breaker on back of engine not tripped and its in nuetral. Hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. We already missed putting the boat in for the fourth, thank god we had two jet skis to play with. Thanks

Are you sure you didn't put it in backwards?

I had that problem for the first time this year. I poured a little gas in the carb and when it started up I pumped the throttle to get the air out of the line.

ok, where exactly do you pour the gas in the carb. i pulled the flame arrestor off and there is two chambers , whitch chamber do i pour the gas into?

Just the front one. Sorry about above -- I was picturing an inline filter.

ok, fired right up after putting a little gas in the carb. Ran for about two min then died again. Thinking fuel pump. also, looked like what i hope was steam coming out of one of my wet exhaust.

Ok, it was the fuel pump. Everything back up and running.

Since this is atleast the third fuel pump for this engine i was wondering if the location of the fuel pump could be the problem. It is mounted up front on the engine right above the fuel filter it seems that it is working harder than it would if i put it down back by the fuel tank. Would moving the location of the pump improve the longevity of the pump? I added a pic of the engine

I wouldn't mess with the Indmar engineering. Here's a possibility - I've been having similar problems with starting and possible fuel line/pump/filter problems (have not yet nailed the culprit). But something I ran across here on the board that I found interesting was that it could be an intermittent problem with the electrical connection to the pump. You might try putting the old pump back on and see if wiggling the wires at the connection cause the pump to start pumping again. Or when and if this new pump appears to go bad, check the electrical connection.
