Surf Wake Help

Over the winter I installed the 750's in the rear. I have the stock 400 in the ski locker. With the ski locker full and the left rear full the wake was bigger but was washed out and did not have a curl to it. I know I need more weight in the front. My question is how fast and where should the wake plate be? I played with the speed from 10-12mph but did not have any luck. I was disappointed to say the least. I see the wakes some guys get and I need that. I have an 04 LSV.

I use mine at 10.5mph and the plate gauge around 3/4 to the right.

add another 440 in the walkway to the front and add another 440 on the seat. I like the bags with the vinyl zip covers. the straps that hold them tie around the base of the tower nicely.
if I have less than 5 in the boat, I usually run another 440 on the floor in the rear left.
I have 1100's in the back. I don't think there's the full 750-1100 difference, but the 1100's add another couple hundred as it fills up the entire locker.

use a gps for mph as well if you aren't. I don't trust my pp and the speedo's are tough to get down to the 1/2mph's...

On the newer LSV most of us run with the plate all the way up. It really does sound like your speed is off a little.

if you dont have access to a portable gps for speed verification, look at the wave and play with the speed till you get a curl.

your hull should do just fine with the 750 in the rear surf side and the 400 up front--wake plate 3/4 to full bow up

Moseley I believe that I have the same hull as you do and the same weight setup. What I found is that I cannot fill the center bag and get the wave to clean up. Here are a couple different pictures.

As you can see there is much less wash in the second picture. I'm still working on getting the pocket longer but for now it works.

Try loosing the center ballast that should help alot.

it definitely seems as though your speed was off. i fill my rear completelyat 750 and then my ski locker maybe 1/4 full. speed around 10.7. wakeplate must be all the way up. also it seems like a no brainer, but make sure everyone is seated on the surf side and not riding up front or opposite side. good luck.

Kay I believe that your hull is different then Moseley's and Mine.

I have an 07 LSV, running 750's in rear and 400 in locker. I've found that it helps to fill the offside 750 about a 1/4 of the way. My typical setup is......locker full, surfside full, offside 1/4 full, wakeplate up all the way, 10.5mph. Also try playing with people placement. When I have a full boat I often have to ask a few of them to sit up in the bow.

I have a 07 obv and Run the 750 in the rear locker, 400 under the seats on the port side, nothing in the center locker, then have everybody sit on the port side, also I have 2 250's I will throw on the seats as necessary depending on how many people I have in the boat Its not all about the weight as much as "list" If I want the wave a bit longer I will throw 1 250 in the bow and tie it to the grab rail but when there is enough free friend ballast there is no need just make a buddy sit up there all. I keep all the weight is as far over as I can get it no off side filling It just doesn't seem to work for me

I know My boat is weighted properly when the rub rail is in the water :) when loaded like this I am very careful slowing down and turning around take your time of you will get wet !!!!

A MC owner flagged me this weekend and said I was going to0 fast at 10.5, we tried every speed from 9.5 to 11 in small increments and little changes made a big difference. I think you need to start at 9.8 and then dial it in for each rider.

Dropping 0.5 to 10.0 cleaned it up for me.

I usually surf at 10.0 and usually have just the wife and two kids in the boat. Yesterday, we had 5 adults in the boat plus the surfer and the pocket was really short at 10.0. Speeding up to 10.5 made a huge difference - it extended the pocket so it looked like my typical wave again.

So yeah, you have to adjust the speed depending on how many people are with you.

Wise words of wisdom above. I adjust speed & plate based on number of people on the boat and on the rider and what they are working on. Lately, I have been running 750 in the port locker, 400 in the ski locker, wife in the back corner seat, wakeplate all the way DOWN (yes, down) and 10.3 to 10.5 mph when the girls are riding. Gives them a plenty big wave and much longer pocket to work on their skills.

Not sure how similar my 2003 supra launch ssv is but I run 750 rear port locker and 400 lb in the bow on the port side. Than have everyone sit on the port side of the boat. Wakeplate all the way up. 10.5 on the pp. I do not even fill up the center under the floor bag. I will post pictures later today.

I've surfed behind my boat without the platform before... not much of a difference with the wave, and it is much louder.

I am not an expert on my surf wave, that being said I think it would just cause more problems than it fixes. How do you easily get in the boat with the platform off? The wash the platform makes is not that bad and should be close to the boat. I think you may have a different problem if your wave is washed out. What is your weight setup for surfing? Post up some pics of your wave and I will try and help but there are a lot of guys who will help that know more than me.

Al seems to have his wake dialed in. Especially after seeing that shot of Brian from Exile surfing behind it. Killer curl, nice distance from the back, and just awesome. A good surf wave is a lot of trial and error, and playing with the variables in the boat (ballast, people, wakeplate, and speed). It's a pain, because it would be nice to have a solid wake each time, but good things come to those who wait!!

sorry for the delayed response - out at the lake for the past week plus and wasn't on the computer much.

THANKS, Al. She tried surfing 3 summers ago, but really got into it last season. Her skills have improved rapidly this season thanks to some help from fellow board members and their coaching.

One thing that I would also try to clean the wake up is turning to the surf side. I found that if turn and get it cleaned up than straight out seems to work good.

^ Agree. It doesn't really have to even be a turn, but just a slight angle to keep the boat banked to the surf side. Kinda hard to describe, easy to execute.
