Buying Boat Please Help

Hey Guys,

Well I've decided to join the Moomba crew and I am currently looking at a 2008 Mobius LSV. The boat has 137 Hrs on it and is listed at 29k. I am posting in this thread because before buying I got to test drive the boat today. Everything works great on the boat but one thing that I did notice was that the boat had some vibrations from wakesurfing speeds to wakeboarding speeds and continued when slowing down. Please chime in if you have any information on what might be the culprit. I understand that it is slightly hard to tell without more information but cover everything you know.

Also if you have some ideas I would like to know what the repair cost might be for that specific problem. I know it could be as simple as a bad prop costing $500 dollars to a bent shaft, but how much would i be looking at spending if it was a bent shaft? Any other thoughts

Seems like a good price, but have the prop and shaft Checked at new prop is about 500 bucks, new shaft etc. Could be slot more expensive. If its a growling noise could just be the prop type, if it's true vibration, then it could be. Bigger problem.

I believe that it was more than a growl. At speeds it wasnt like the boat was just trembling with vibration but it was not extremely smooth either. Also I would like to note that while cruising the boat almost would like to turn to the right by itself. And I know that if it is the prop i am looking at about 500 but what if it is the shaft- what kind of price would I be looking at then?

Are you taking it to a Moomba dealership? Will they be servicing this boat after the sell?

Not that they would be dishonest, but I figure they would be a lot more honest if they were going to service the boat going forward. If they are a Skiers Choice dealer already then I am sure you have nothing to worry about. You probably have nothing to worry about anyway honestly, I'm just in a pessimistic mood.

But a few things you should be looking at here.

Why was the shaft bent if it is indeed bent? Did he run over something? How long has it been bent? Running on a bent shaft can do damage to a few things. Poor engine alignment and I believe loose motor mounts can screw up the shaft alignment as well. So have the mechanic check those things.

Also, I could be wrong, but I believe you can measure it using a dial indicator. I have heard that you need to make sure whoever is fixing the shaft (assuming they are not going to get a new one) is doing it correctly. It needs to be done within a certain millimeter, so I would ask the dealer exactly how straight they will get it. Sorry, I can't recall what that exact number is. Seems like it is .005 of an inch or less. Dealer should know.

Tomorrow we were going to take the boat to a local shop instead of the moomba dealer. The seller said that the boat stays serviced at Atlanta Marine. I do need to ask him if the 2008 is still under any type of warranty although Im not sure if prop shafts fall under the warranty category. Thanks for pointing me in a general direction of things to check for, do you know what a new prop shaft might cost with repairs worst case scenario?

That being said........ If it has been serviced at Atlanta Marine, then ask for Heidi and ask her about the boat. She is FANTASTIC and has helped me many times.

Do you live in Georgia? My boat stays a few hundred yards from Atlanta Marine during the summer.

Hopefully not premature, but welcome to the family. That is a GREAT boat you are buying. Pretty cool of the owner to be proactive on letting it get checked out by a mechanic.

That is an EXCELLENT price on a 2008.

Sinclair huh? Good deal. We have a member on here who has a lake home on Sinclair and is down there right now actually. There is a Moomba Jam on Sinclair in July as well that some members on here are putting together.

The wake is great with just the stock 3 bag setup. If you really want a big time wake put 750s in the back and a bow sac up front.

The wake behind yours will be fine for where you are. It is actually better than mine as there was a hull change in 2006 on the LSV. I have ridden behind a 2006 LSV and LOVE the wake on it. We had some additional ballast on it but even when it had the ballast emptied it rode so well on the busy waters of Lanier.

Honestly without knowing how you are on a board, its tough to recommend how to adjust your ballast. But since you have the Gravity III you should be set for a season or two of hard boarding before you look to add additional ballast. (Assuming you are a beginner)

Save some money for mods, you're gonna need it. :) The stock ballast system in 08 is slow so you'll probably want to upgrade if you end up with bigger bags. And this forum is awful for your budget... you'll be posting in the audio section before long and then you're really in deep. Good luck with the boat purchase!

WaterBullDAWG, I knew they had changed in 06 but didnt know if it was better or worse. I have been boarding behind boats without ballast so I will have to learn what I like to ride. This boat should last me a while but I think I wll step up the ballast system pretty soon. I love throwing Raleys and Whirlys Ill take all the ballast I can get.

I think were getting premature here again haha I still have a vibration problem.

Garrett, the 08 lsv will provide plenty of wake when saced out properly for your skills, raleys and whirlybirds will classify you as an expert rider on this forum... Lol. Brain rinse is right, you may want to mod the ballast system with the bigger bags and yes, this forum sucks you in and spends your cash on the boat.:p.

Good luck on the inspection hopefully it all gets fixed.

Hey Garrett,

I'm sitting lakeside on Sinclair while I type this up. I am in the Island Creek area and am hosting the Jam in July. Hope to see you here rgardless if this deal goes thru, or not. You can check out a few different boats & setups, then reach for your wallet.

Do as WaterBullDawg stated and call Heidi ASAP. She will know the boat, history, etc. The only guy on Sinclair I would trust is Dexter @ The Boat Doctor, but I don't know how much experience he has with inboards since Sinclair is mostly outboards & 'tooners.

Check the prop. It is probabl the OJ and a switch to an ACME will eliminate that growl. If the boat is on Sinclair, I'm here thru next week and can look at it with you, if you'd like. I'm no expert, but a lot of guys on here are, and I've learned a ton from them.

as far as the vibration (know I'm late) but based on my 06 LSV with OJ 4 blade 14.25 x 14 prop, slow speed vibration (surf speed,etc) but not near as bad at higher speeds, should be just that prop, not the shaft.

I just ordered the ACME 1847 (there is a group buy discount right now $50 off). hoping that will change a lot of vibration issues on mine..

growl is more of the prop than shaft anyway...

Hey guys thanks alot for the support and information, I checked it out today and 2 of the 4 blades have a bend about 1/2" down from the tip so I will be looking for a new prop first, then if the vibration/growl persists I will look further. The deal is currently in place and the boat is being held, Hopefully everything will go through by the end of this coming week! I will continue to post and keep you updated as the time nears that I get the boat, also I will let yall know how the new prop works once everything is in order

What type if prop is it being replaced with?

Another OJ 14.25x14 will still have a growl.

Go with the ACME 1433 and your wake will look much smoother and no more vibes.

No I didnt leave the boat at the local marina, but I worked at Twin Bridges here on lake sinclair for about 3 years and have a puller to get the prop taken care of. Shouldnt be a big deal at all.

A new oem shaft will run around 330 plus labour and tax to install....... make sure not to damage the dripless seal .....takes about an hour...... if you check the alignment should be .003 or less you can determine if the shaft is bent.....instuctions in the how to forum.......takes about 20 minutes to check it.
If you water tested it you should check the bilge before and after the test to make sure there is no water in it from leaks

Hey Guys!! I am sorry for the very delayed response but I was as unsure as you all were as to wether or not I was going to get the 2008 Mobius. Sadly I will tell you that I did not get the Moomba because the deal fell through for various reasons. Now with that off my chest I can tell you that just a few days ago I did manage to buy a 2003 Supra Launch 22ssv from Atlanta Marine. I have been riding behind the boat non-stop for the past 3 days and absolutely love it! I will post pics once I get some good shots out on the lake
